Tiger Woods has ‘awesome day’ with 12-year-old son, Charlie, in return to golf at PNC Championship pro-am

0

ORLANDO, Fla. — Tiger Woods did his best again Friday to downplay expectations surrounding his return to golf, but even he can’t help himself once in a while.

So it was that he flashed a bit of anger at a tee shot he hit off the toe on the ninth hole during the pro-am for the PNC Championship. The ball flight was less than pleasing, and Woods snatched his tee out of the ground in disgust.

Only to have his 12-year-old son, Charlie, mock him: “Nice shot.”

Tiger fired that tee at Charlie’s back, everyone laughed, and the round at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club continued with Woods remarkably even being in this position just less than 10 months following a horrific car crash that severely damaged his right leg and foot.

“It was an awesome day,” said Woods, who admitted he was nervous about hitting shots with spectators watching for fear of hitting them. “It was just awesome to be back out here playing, to be out here with my son. We had an absolute blast.”

It was a year ago at this same tournament where Woods last played any competitive golf. He teamed with Charlie to tie for seventh in the event that has 20 teams, with one player required to be a major champion, paired with a family member.

Charlie stole the show a year ago, impressing with his game and the mannerisms that looked so much like those of his dad.

Only a few days later, Woods had a fifth back procedure, and his status for the 2021 season was in doubt when he was involved in the crash that left him hospitalized for three weeks before a long rehab.

The fact he was hitting shots in a public setting with TV cameras rolling so soon after a debilitating crash was, in many ways, surprising to him too.

“Yes and no,” Woods said. “If you would have asked me after those three months in the bed, [if] I would be here, I would have given you a different answer. But there are no days off. We worked every day. Even days where I didn’t feel very good, we still worked on something. So every day, there was never a day off the entire time other than those three months in bed.”

In many ways, it was like old times. Caddie Joe LaCava carried the bag, and his oldest son, Joe Jr., caddied for Charlie. Tiger’s girlfriend, Erica Herman, who normally skips the pro-am, was there to sometimes drive the golf cart and take in the scene.

Woods’ longtime friend, Rob McNamara, was there to watch all aspects of his swing and his game while also offering words of encouragement to Charlie.

The difference, of course, was the golf cart, which Woods is allowed to use in this 36-hole event that begins Saturday.

That won’t be allowed when he returns to the PGA Tour at whatever point that becomes possible. Woods, who turns 46 on Dec. 30, acknowledged again that he is a long way off. But might he petition for the use of a cart at some point? Due to the 2001 Supreme Court ruling via Casey Martin, he could conceivably apply under the Americans With Disabilities Act.

“No. I wouldn’t, no,” Woods said. “Absolutely not. Not for a PGA Tour event, no. That’s just not who I am. That’s not how I’ve always been, and if I can’t play at that level, I can’t play at that level.”

It is clear that Woods is not near that level now. There were numerous good shots, especially with his short clubs. Woods was sharp around the greens, hit some nice wedge approaches and even bombed a 320-yard drive on the 11th hole.

But most of his tee shots were in the 280-yard range, and after the 11th, he played sparingly, by design.

“From everything that’s gone on, I’m surprised he is here,” said Notah Begay, Woods’ longtime friend, former teammate at Stanford and Golf Channel analyst. “That he’s in a position to compete is remarkable. He’s moving well and looks good.

“There’s no endurance. So it’s almost like he’s on a pitch count. He’s only got so many full swings in him each day, and he knows that. It’s good for him to be in a place where he’s OK with it. That comes from a lot of maturity and coming to terms with the reality of an accident that could have been catastrophic. And being in a good place with it.”

Woods did show some signs of distress. At times, his walking was slow, and while he might not have done so with a limp, the right leg and foot clearly were bothering him. That’s why he didn’t hit as many shots, simply to save himself.

“I still have a long way to go in this rehab process. As I said, I don’t have the endurance to be out here to play at the Tour level,” he said. “This is different. You saw it out there. I can hit around here, drop a ball here, hit a few wedges.

“But to go out there and have 220 yards and know that you have to hit a 3- or 4-iron and miss the ball in the correct spot, and then hit certain shots and one stroke determines whether you win or lose, that’s a totally different mindset than what we have out here this week. I’m not there yet.”

Woods and Charlie play at 12:18 p.m. ET Saturday and will be grouped with Justin Thomas and his father, Mike.

‘Master of clay,’ Atseye, overpowers Imeh at Rainoil Tennis Open final | The Guardian Nigeria News

Nigeria’s men’s master of clay, Henry Atseye and women number one player, Oyinlomo Quadre, has been crowned winners of this year’s Rainoil Tennis Open Championship.

Held at the Clay Court of the Lagos Country Club, in the men’s singles final, Henry Atseye proved why he is the master of clay in Nigeria as he defeated defending champion and number one seed, Joseph Imeh, by two straight sets of 7/6 (7/4), 6/2 to emerge the winner.

Speaking after receiving his trophy and prize money, Atseye appreciated Rainoil for supporting tennis in the country, pointing out that the tennis open offers Nigerian players the opportunity to get exposed to clay.

Also, defending women champion of the annual Rainoil Tennis Open Championship, Oyinlomo Quadre retained her title by beating number one seed, Marylove Edwards, in two straight sets.

Quadre, who came into the tournament as second seed after about seven months lay-off due to injury, proved too hard a nut for her opponent to crack, as she dominated all the sets to end the ambition of Marylove Edwards whom she was  meeting for the first time in her career and ended the game at 6-4, 6-1.

Speaking at the end of the energy-sapping encounter, Quadre noted that she’s happy retaining the title despite seven months of lay-off.

“It was not an easy game because there was a lot of tension, but I played my best game and won against an equally good opponent,” she said.

In her own remarks, Marylove admitted playing against a very good player; saying that she tried her best but her best was not enough to dethrone her.

In the men’s doubles event, Mathew Abamu and Michael Chima defeated Henry Atseye and Nnoso Madueke to emerge winners, while the women’s doubles was won by Omolayo Bamidele and Oyinlomo Quadre

The Group Managing Director of Rainoil, Dr. Gabriel Ogbechie , in his remarks, said tennis is a sports he is so passionate about, noting that if it is invested in, it will help young Nigerians make  a very decent living

He urged the players to be more dedicated and committed in order to improve on their game and thanked Lagos Country Club, Ikeja, for being a good host.

Winners in the men and women’s singles went home with N600, 000 and 500,000 respectively, while their runners-up got N300,000 and N250,000 respectively. Winners of the men and women’s doubles went home with N600,000 and N500,000 respectively.

Derek Chisora trainer mocks Eddie Hearn over Deontay Wilder call | Boxing | Sport

The Gypsy King is reportedly eyeing a double-header with Joshua in 2022, as the two rivals have been agonisingly close to finally meeting in the ring on several occasions.

They were verbally sparring for years about the prospect of a mammoth event and they came close to penning a deal to face off and name the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world.

However, Wilder won an arbitration hearing to secure a third bout with Fury while Joshua turned to Oleksandr Usyk.

The Ukrainian is now the WBA, IBF, WBO and IBO champion and he could face Fury in an undisputed clash in 2022 should he defeat Joshua in their anticipated rematch.

Boston Celtics post historically bad shooting performance in loss to LA Clippers

0

BOSTON — The old adage about the NBA is that it is, at its core, a make-or-miss league. If there was ever a game that proved that to be true, the LA Clippers91-82 victory over the Boston Celtics at TD Garden on Wednesday night was it.

Boston (16-19), which has now lost three in a row and four of its past five games, had one of the worst shooting performances not just of this season but in recent memory, as the Celtics shot 4-for-42 from 3-point range — including missing loads of wide-open shots — in losing a second straight game to a heavily short-handed team.

“I guess so,” said Jaylen Brown, who scored 30 points but shot 13-for-36 for the game, when asked if shooting, good or bad, can be contagious. “We missed a lot of shots, and I thought we had a lot of open looks.

“We moved the ball and we got … I know they played zone, but we got a lot of great shots, I felt. Wide-open looks. And they didn’t go down.”

The numbers, at least to some degree, back him up. Here’s a quick run through the gory details, courtesy of ESPN Stats & Information:

  • The Celtics’ 4-for-42 shooting performance from 3-point range was the second-worst performance ever by a team shooting at least 40 3s (trailing only a 4-for-45 performance by the Houston Rockets on Feb. 28 of last season).

  • Boston went 1-for-18 in the fourth quarter, including missing its final 15 3-pointers of the game. Those 17 misses in the quarter were the most by any team in a single quarter in at least the past 25 seasons.

  • Boston’s 82 points on 101 field goal attempts is *its lowest point total in a game with at least 100 field goal attempts since the 3-point line was introduced in the 1979-80 season.

  • Boston’s 4-for-39 performance on catch-and-shoot 3-pointers is the worst night any team has had on catch-and-shoot opportunities since Second Spectrum began using tracking data in the 2013-14 season, using a minimum of 35 attempts. Including Wednesday’s game, there have been 482 such games, and Boston’s was last.

  • The difference between Boston’s effective field goal percentage (36.63) and its expected effective field goal percentage (56.68) was 20.05 — the worst mark any team has had in any game this season.

  • Brown’s 36 field goal attempts without an assist are the most by any player since former Celtic Antoine Walker took that many shots in a loss to the Washington Wizards on Jan. 7, 1998. That said, Brown also had eight potential assists — tied for the most of any player this season in a game in which he finished with zero assists.

In summation: The Celtics got tons of wide-open, quality shots — and missed virtually all of them.

None of that, however, changes the fact that Boston has now dropped back-to-back games to teams ravaged by a combination of injuries and COVID-19. The Clippers were so short-handed that they had two players arrive in Boston hours before the game — including James Ennis, who played against them in a win over the Brooklyn Nets on Monday in Los Angeles — to fill out their roster.

The losses leave Boston in a tie for 10th in the Eastern Conference standings with the Toronto Raptors. More importantly, it left the Celtics searching for answers as to how to snap out of a funk that has sent what recently was a positive performance during the hardest month of their season careening in the opposite direction.

“I think we did get a lot of open looks, despite what the statistics would say,” Brown said. “I don’t think we were forcing shots. I thought we got a lot of open looks that didn’t go down.

“I think it’s unfortunate timing because we wanted to respond from last game. A lot of those guys came out ready to fight, and we just came up short. We came up f—ing short.”

Unlike the game Brown referenced — Monday’s loss to the short-handed Minnesota Timberwolves, one of the worst performances of Boston’s season — coach Ime Udoka said there were some positives to take away from the performance.

Boston mauled the Clippers on the glass, grabbing 21 offensive rebounds and taking 20 more shots. The Celtics committed only eight turnovers, compared to 14 for the Clippers, and held LA to 91 points.

But that wasn’t enough to overcome a bad shooting night — one that sinks Boston further down the East standings, another disappointing night in a season full of them.

“We get 20 more shots and we hold a team to 91 points … that’s a game we should win,” Udoka said.

Or as Grant Williams put it: “I think shooting is something we have to be better at, I guess.”

Szafnauer: Vettel’s been brilliant – GRAND PRIX 247

0

Otmar Szafnauer claims that Vettel's been brilliantSebastian Vettel joined Aston Martin from Ferrari for the 2021 Formula 1 season, and despite his season not being stellar, the German seems to have done enough for his team boss Otmar Szafnauer to label him as brilliant.

It has been a re-building year for Vettel, after the misery he’s been through during his last year with Ferrari, and it was not easy, as he needed to get used to a new team, a new car, and a new power unit, with Aston Martin taking an unrecoverable hit with the aero regulations for the cars’ floors in 2021 hurting them most along with Mercedes, who unlike the British team, recovered and fought for the Title till the last race.

Speaking to Motorsportweek, Aston Martin team Boss Otmar Szafnauer reflected on his new driver’s first season with the team.

Vettel is a man of integrity

“He’s been brilliant,” he said. “He’s such a man of integrity; he works hard, has a great work ethic, leaves no stone unturned.

“The engineers like working with him, the mechanics love him as a person, he’s just a genuine guy. And that goes a long way in life.

“I’ve known him for 15 years, everyone else talked about him in the same manner that I’m talking about him now.

“I wasn’t surprised but I was still delighted to have what I thought he was confirmed by his actions,” Szafnauer revealed.

Vettel had a sluggish start to his season, and it wasn’t until Monaco that he started delivering results with a superb fifth place around the streets of the principality.

“It took him four races or so to get to know us, to know the car, the powertrain, and since he’s done a good job,” Szafnauer reflected.

Vettel is relentless

“I think his greatest quality as a racing driver is just relentlessly working at getting quicker and quicker and quicker. He even does that in the race.

“When he starts a race he will look at other drivers, the lines they’re taking, and will try things within a race to be able to go quicker or save tyres more or whatever you have to do,” the 57-year-old explained.

“That to me is his biggest asset,” he concluded.

Despite not being consistent in the results, Vettel delivered some highs for Aston Martin with a the team’s first podium in Baku (second place), and a second place in Hungary which was taken away for a fuel infringement on the quadruple F1 Champion’s car.

To his credit, the car at his disposal was not worthy of being in the top ten, the team failing to recover from the aero rules revisions, with the challenge of working on the 2022 machine affecting the development of the AMR21.

Next season, depending on the new Aston Martin F1 machine, a clearer idea could be created about Vettel’s level, who finished the 2021 season 12th in the standings winning the Crypto.com Overtake Award with 132 overtakes to his credit.

On the cool-down lap in Abu Dhabi’s season finale the German joked: ” What’s the prize? One million jelly beans?”

Boxing news: Hearn tables Chisora to Deontay Wilder for all or nothing comeback fight | Boxing | Sport

0

Eddie Hearn says Dereck Chisora is ready for one last hurrah against Deontay Wilder – if the Bronze Bomber is ready to step up to the plate. The former WBC heavyweight champion is taking his time to decide his next move after going out on his shield in his historic trilogy battle with Tyson Fury in Las Vegas two months ago.

Wilder took some heavy punishment that night after being pulverised in his rematch with Fury, sparking doubts as to whether he will fight on.

Yet should he wish to do so, Wilder could be just one fight away from the world title picture again.

For that reason, he must select his opponent wisely with Andy Ruiz Jr and Chris Arreola among those expected to fall under consideration.

But Matchroom chief Hearn is adamant that warhorse Chisora would represent the perfect man for Wilder.

“Deontay Wilder gained so much from his loss against Tyson Fury. We want to see you back in the ring,” he told DAZN’s Boxing Show.

“I’ve got the perfect guy for you – Dereck Chisora. Come on, he’s getting on a little bit, he’s coming off three defeats on the spin now.

“Easy comeback fight for Deontay Wilder. Dereck’s ready.”

Hearn’s comments have not been received well by all corners of the boxing game given that Chisora also appeared to take huge punishment in his heroic defeat to Joseph Parker in Manchester.

‘Del Boy’ was just one punch from being knocked out at several stages of the fight but he would not lie down, playing his part in one of the fights of the year.

Yet for all the entertainment, it’s clear Chisora does not have much left in the tank, although he will say differently.

It’s now three straight defeats for the 38-year-old, who has lost 12 times in his pro career.

But Chisora is determined to fight on, claiming he will return this summer.

“F*** retirement,” said the Brit on his social media channels after being defeated by Parker on the scorecards in their rematch.

Prior to the fight, Chisora’s promoter Hearn even claimed Del Boy has what it takes to beat Wilder as he looks to set up a potential blockbuster heavyweight clash.

“All Chisora’s losses have come at elite level, and Wilder is elite level,” he said.

“Listen, Chisora can beat Wilder. If he hits him with a big shot…

“I tell you what, if that fight goes past four rounds, Chisora wins that fight.

“But he’s got to get past four rounds and that’s gonna be really dangerous against someone who punches as hard as Wilder.”

Cleveland Cavaliers’ Ricky Rubio has torn ACL in left knee, done for season

0

Cleveland Cavaliers guard Ricky Rubio will miss the rest of the season after suffering a torn ACL in his left knee, the team announced Wednesday.

Rubio, who is under contract through this season, had an MRI on the knee at Cleveland Clinic Sports Health on Wednesday after suffering the injury during Tuesday night’s 108-104 loss to the New Orleans Pelicans.

The Cavaliers said they would update his status “as appropriate.”

Rubio also tore the ACL in his left knee during his rookie season in Minnesota in 2012.

As Rubio was driving down the lane Tuesday, he maneuvered around Pelicans guard Devonte’ Graham and slipped as he planted his right foot, and his left knee buckled as he fell to the ground with 2 minutes, 20 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.

Rubio, in pain, immediately grabbed his left knee and signaled to the Cavs’ bench for help. He was not putting any weight on his left leg as he was helped off the floor by teammates Kevin Love and Isaac Okoro.

The 31-year-old Rubio had a major impact in his first season with Cleveland, providing leadership and depth to a young squad. The Cavs have already won 20 games after going 22-50 last season.

His injury is the second significant one to Cleveland’s backcourt. Collin Sexton suffered a season-ending knee injury on Nov. 7. At the time, Sexton was the team’s leading scorer.

“Him and I have such a history,“ Love said after Tuesday’s game. “I really care for him. … We’re just completely gutted. He was having such a great season.”

In 34 games this season, Rubio, who was acquired during the summer in a trade from Minnesota, was averaging 13.1 points, 6.6 assists and 4.1 rebounds.

ESPN’s Andrew Lopez and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Rangnick says Covid has hampered Man Utd progress | The Guardian Nigeria News

0

Ralf Rangnick said Wednesday that the upheaval caused by the coronavirus crisis had hindered his efforts to stamp his authority on the under-performing Manchester United squad.

United are unbeaten in all four games they have played under the German, who replaced Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on an interim basis late last month.

But a Covid-19 outbreak at the club meant United had not played a match for more than two weeks before Monday’s disappointing 1-1 Premier League draw at struggling Newcastle.

United, who host Burnley on Thursday, are seventh in the Premier League table, seven points behind fourth-placed Arsenal, but with two games in hand.

Asked if he had achieved as much as he had wanted in his first weeks in charge, Rangnick said: “Of course not.

“Every coach, every ambitious coach — and there’s no difference between other coaches and myself in that area — wants to take faster steps and larger steps forward.

“But in order to do that, you need to be able to train.

“As you know, we had to close Carrington (training base) for four days. Before that we had eight or nine outfield players in training, so directly after the Norwich game, and they only came back in small bits and pieces.

“The last three days we were almost back to full strength with regard to the size of the squad, but we couldn’t do that much in training.”

Rangnick said his players had looked good in the few training sessions they had managed before the Newcastle game, which made Monday’s performance a “negative surprise”.

French international Raphael Varane made his first appearance since November 2 at St James’ Park in a central defensive partnership with Harry Maguire, which was far from convincing.

However, Rangnick defended the former Real Madrid man.

“Rafa hasn’t played for the last five or six weeks and even before the Tottenham game he was injured so in total in the last three months he hasn’t played that many games,” he said.

“Yes, he made a mistake before the first goal that we conceded, but apart from that, I think he was OK. I wouldn’t say that he was outstanding and the same with Harry, but they did OK.”

Defender Victor Lindelof, who missed the trip to Newcastle after testing positive for coronavirus, will still be absent for the Burnley match, while Paul Pogba remains out with a thigh problem.

Bruno Fernandes will be unavailable due to a one-match suspension, after collecting his fifth yellow card of the Premier League season.
