The final round of the 2021 Dubai Kartdrome Endurance Championship Powered by EBC Brakes ended in thrilling fashion with the top three teams on the same lap after a gruelling Kartdrome 24 Hour race that began on Friday and ended Saturday.

At 13:00 pm Dubai time, EBC Brakes Racing crossed the finish line not only to win the most prestigious karting race in the region but also to claim the 2021 Dubai Kartdrome Endurance Championship title which earns them a free ticket to the Spanish 12 Hours Karting at Fernando Alonso Circuit.

Speaking of the double F1 World Champion, who a week earlier was racing in the epic Abu Dhabi Grand Prix Formula 1 season finale, showed that he is a master in any form of racing.

The Spaniard led his team, including former F1 driver Pedro de la Rosa, F3000 ace Angel Burgueno and Bulgarian karting sensation Nikola Tsolov to pole position for the 17th edition of the race, after winning the grid deciding Sprint race to roars of approval from the crowd assembled at Motorcity.

That set the tone for the 28 teams to do battle, with Bugueno starting the race for Alonso’s MD Racing and leading early on, setting the fastest lap of the race during that impressive stint.

What followed was an intriguing battle between half a dozen teams, as strategy combined with pace through traffic played a big role.

Among the leaders around the halfway mark were MD Racing, SuperDryver Maffi Racing, EBC Brakes Racing, PF Racing, Stop & Go Racing, Mirgap Racing, Fly Emirates Corporate and Porsche Fanstastic who led the early stages of the race.

After 24 hours the top three teams were separated by a mere three seconds, with second place decided in the final corners.

In the closing stages, the top three edged ahead by a couple of laps with EBC Brakes Racing maintaining and controlling a quarter lap lead which they held on to take an impressive victory by 25 seconds after 24 hours.

Drama ensued on the final lap of the 1132 laps, Alonso’s MD Racing looked set for third but a stunning final stint by SuperDryver Maffi Racing saw them edge ahead with a couple of corners remaining, to steal second place by a mere 0.181s.

By the time the dust had settled on proceedings, the race and the big trophy belonged to newly crowned champions – EBC Brakes Racing – whose drivers Arjun Manjunath, Duarte Lopes, Boris Bovier and Mickael Mota proved to be the best of the best over a challenging 24 hours.

Their victory was achieved despite the absence of regulars Anjum Sheikh and Kyle Kumaran who contributed, in the previous three rounds, to winning the 2021 Dubai Kartdrome Endurance Champions on Saturday.

Other Endurance Kartdrome Champions are Fly Emirates (EGKC). Mirgap Racing and Omantel Makasib 2

Stalwarts of the race since the first Dubai Kartdrome 24 Hours held 17 years ago, Fly Emirates (EGKC) did enough by finishing seventh overall to take the Corporate Team champion title, beating Hoxton Capital Management to the prestigious accolade.

Mirgap Racing from the UAE finished 11th overall to claim the esteemed Nations Cup and GCC Cup titles, beating Lebanon’s Cedar Racing Team and Portugal’s Stop & Go Racing.

Alonso: Fantastic race it is really one of the moments of the year for us

Reflecting on an intriguing finale, Kartdrome manager and race organiser David Bright said: “Big shout out to EBC Brakes Racing for a great 2021 campaign, they are worthy champions and signed off in style by winning this one after a 24-hour battle that had the top three in sight of one another on the final lap.

And what a final lap that was by the SuperDryver Maffi Racing to take second place from Alonso’s MD Racing team. You could not script it!

“A big shout out to Fernando for winning the hearts and minds of everyone who was in this race. He was engaging, friendly and relaxed. At the same time, he was super competitive and really wanted to win this one. Next time Mate!

“In closing a big thank you to all the officials, marshals, Kartdrome staff, the incredible drivers, their good-spirited teams, our sponsors EBC Brakes and all our partners for making this such a great event. We already look forward to the next one,” concluded Bright.

Final word to Fernando Alonso: “It was really fantastic. It is really one of the moments of the year for us, a group of friends here together at the Kartdrome. We have so much fun. It’s 24-hours of pure fun driving plus the atmosphere with the teams and drivers is really enjoyable. We will be back!”

Dereck Chisora responds to retirement pleas after heavy punishment in Joseph Parker war | Boxing | Sport

0

Joseph Parker’s annihilation of Dereck Chisora on Saturday evening gave the Brit a lot to think about in terms of retirement, with many pundits believing he should throw in the towel on his career. But the star’s x-rated tweet has shown he is nowhere near calling it a day just yet, despite the loss.

Chisora, 37, took on Parker in Manchester in front of an adoring crowd in a bid to win the WBO Inter-Continental heavyweight title.

‘Del Boy’ had already lost to Parker at the same venue just seven months ago, but came back wanting revenge.

The New Zealander started superbly, knocking Chisora down in the fourth round amid some superb boxing early on.

Yet Chisora fought back, even winning some rounds on the judges scorecards after being outclassed early in the fight before losing on a unanimous points decision.

And his defiant message of ‘F**k retirement. I’ll be back in the summer b***h’ afterwards proves his intentions are solely focused on returning to the ring for yet more bouts.

It offers a vast difference from the views of the public, who are adamant the Brit should retire and quit whilst he is ahead.

Matt Christie, editor of boxing news, made his feelings on the 37-year-old’s career and what it has in store for him.

“Chisora’s future won’t thank him for any of this,” Christie tweeted.

“But for now, we all watch and cheer. Astonishing bravery and resilience from Del Boy. But enough is enough.”

The result leaves Chisora with a 12th loss from 44 of his fights, having lost seven of those in just 14 bouts.

And with his 38th birthday around the corner next week, it remains to be seen just how long Chisora will have left in the boxing world.

He only lost to Parker on points despite being knocked down three times, battling right to the very end in a bid to save face – and his opponent acknowledged the tough mentality shown.

“Derek always comes for war, he was one tough guy and never stopped coming forward until the end,” Parker said.

“I felt a lot stronger. It was important to start strong and not be negative from the beginning.

“You can see there are improvements to be made.

“The crowd went mental when he walked out. They just want to support him.”

LA Clippers forward Marcus Morris Sr. enters NBA’s health and safety protocols

0

LA Clippers starting power forward Marcus Morris Sr. has entered the NBA’s health and safety protocols and is out against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Saturday.

The Clippers said Morris was the only player in health and safety protocols. Forward Nic Batum recently returned on Dec. 8 after a stint in health and safety protocols following a positive test for COVID-19. Batum has missed the past three games because of an ankle injury.

Paul George has missed four straight games with an elbow injury. George and Batum were listed as questionable to play at Oklahoma City.

Morris was playing his best basketball. He scored 20 or more points in five of his past seven games and is averaging 13.8 points and 4.8 rebounds. Morris missed 15 straight games earlier this season because of a knee injury.

In Osimhen’s absence, Eagles have able options – Eguavoen | The Guardian Nigeria News

0

Interim Super Eagles Head Coach, Augustine Eguavoen, has said that the country has other quality strikers that can power the team to Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) glory next month, in Cameroun should Napoli fail to release, Victor Osimhen.

Osimhen is continuing his rehabilitation after undergoing a surgery that corrected multiple fractures that he suffered on November 21, during Napoli’s Serie A clash with Inter Milan.

The Napoli ace is back in training with teammates as he races against time to be fit for Cameroun 2021, where he is expected to be one of the tournament’s major stars.

Serie A faceoff with AC Milan today comes too early for Osimhen, still, recent reports indicate that the Nigerian international could be ready for his side’s matchup against Juventus on January 6.

That fixture comes three days before the start of the AFCON and five days before the Super Eagles’ first match versus Egypt.

Osimhen could take a late flight into Cameroun after the Juventus game to join the rest of his international teammates.

However, Eguavoen wants the 22-year-old to think of healing completely first, and he admits a lot depends on Napoli releasing him for the AFCON.

“First of all, we hope that he is well and that he can recover as soon as possible. “I am sure that Victor has a great desire to play and help his national team, but above all, he must recover his condition as best as he can, and then we should understand if Napoli will let him go,” he said.

The former international confessed that he would rely on many of the players that the former Bordeaux manager worked with during his five-year stint in charge of the three-time African champions.

Eguavoen did not, however, rule out inviting a few new stars to strengthen the Eagles.

He continued: “We will work with the group that Rohr has kept together over the years. Most of the players have known each other for a long time and have been playing together for some time, but I do not rule out that there may be some new faces in the call-ups. If Osimhen is not with us, we have other good players who can replace him.”

Union Berlin’s Taiwo Awoniyi, Watford’s Emmanuel Dennis, and Trabzonspor’s Anthony Nwakaeme are some of the other strikers, who failed to enjoy much playing time under the sacked former coach, Gernot Rohr.

Tiger Woods shoots scramble 62 with son, Charlie, in first round of PNC Championship

0

ORLANDO, Fla. — Tiger Woods knows the challenges he faces, understands the physical limitations that will hamper him, realizes that this week at the PNC Championship is just one small step — however painful — on his way back from a serious car crash.

All of that perspective served him well as he played his first competitive round of golf in a year in what is considered an offseason family event for major champions.

Playing with his son, Charlie, for the second straight year — “Charlie’s going to be carrying you guys I guess,” Justin Thomas quipped on the first hole — Woods showed flashes of the 15-time major champion but plenty of reminders of the long journey he faces.

“It’s frustrating when I don’t hit the ball as far as I know that I can and the shots that I see don’t come off the way I want,” Woods said after he and Charlie combined for a scramble score of 10-under-par 62 at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club. “By the old numbers, I don’t have endurance. I haven’t played. This is, what, my fourth, [fifth] round of the entire year. I don’t have any golf endurance.

“It’s tiring out there, so it was a slow day. But that’s something that — if I want to compete out here at the [PGA] Tour level — I’m going to have to get the endurance back and hit thousands upon thousands of golf balls. Just takes time.”

Woods, who turns 46 on Dec. 30, was in no way upset or discouraged. If anything, he appeared to enjoy the day: the needling with Thomas and his dad, Mike; the applause from spectators who were keen to welcome him back. Among those in attendance were Woods’ daughter and Charlie’s sister, Sam; his girlfriend, Erica; friends; and players such as John Cook and Arjun Atwal. Ian Poulter, who lives in Orlando, was in the gallery with his son, Joshua, who was just as eager to watch Charlie as he was Tiger.

The competitive side of Woods showed strongly afterward when he noted that a goal was to not make a bogey; he and Charlie made one in each round last year on their way to shooting 62s each day. This 62 came with a clean card and trailed leaders Stewart Cink and his son, Reagan, by 3 strokes. The Woodses are in a five-way tie for fifth.

Charlie, 12, hit a number of good tee shots to spare his dad the trouble, and it was clear as the day wore on that Woods’ walking became more labored. In the Feb. 23 car crash that occurred in Southern California, Woods suffered multiple fractures to his right leg and numerous injuries to his foot and ankle. He was hospitalized for three weeks, and it took months before he could walk unaided.

“I wish I could have walked with him and been with him every step like I was last year,” Woods said. “Physically I’m unable to do that. It was different trying to drive the cart slower with him and talk to him and make sure we were present and we’re still a team and we’re still doing it all together.

“It’s a little harder when I’m in a cart moving around a little bit or trying to get through the galleries. The guys are extremely respectful and great. So supportive, but again, it’s totally different than walking step by step. Unfortunately, it’s a reality that we just can’t experience this year.”

Woods said there were only three shots he hit that would be in line with what he’s accustomed to: a 220-yard 4-iron behind the hole on the par-5 third; a good drive at the 14th; and a “smoked” 7-iron at the par-3 17th. His caddie, Joe LaCava, said the 7-iron traveled about 185 yards and was one of his more impressive shots.

“He’s maybe a club to a half-club off,” LaCava said. “It’s really pretty impressive, though, when you think about it.”

Justin Thomas, who won the tournament with his father last year, was determined to not let Woods outdrive him — something that occurred on the 11th hole.

“He really didn’t need to say anything,” Thomas joked. “I was just so embarrassed that he hit it past me. That was enough.”

Thomas, who won the Players Championship earlier this year for his 14th PGA Tour victory, has probably spent more time with Woods of late than anyone. He’s well aware of the obstacles that Woods faces. But he saw a lot of positives in his game.

“I was so impressed by the speed that he had and the shots he was hitting,” Thomas said. “At least from my perspective, it looked like a lot of the moves and everything were there. If anything a little short, which naturally you would think he’s not going to hit it as far.

“But man, that 4-iron he hit into 3 today, that was just ridiculous. I looked at him as soon as he sat in the cart, he just kind of looked at me and smiles and I knew exactly that that’s the kind of shots that he hits when he’s healthy.”

Cross River Table Tennis Association begins grassroots development programme | The Guardian Nigeria News

0

Cross River State Table Tennis Association (CRSTTA) will, today, flag off a two-day talent hunt programme at the UJ Esuene Stadium, Calabar, aimed at discovering young, talented players in the state.

It is the second edition of the Edim Inok Table Tennis Championship, which the association is holding in collaboration with Cross River Paper Commission.

According to the association’s Head Coach, Richard Edem, the tournament has four categories, including, men’s singles, women’s singles, junior boys’ singles and cadet singles.

Edem appealed to parents, whose wards are interested in the sport, to support them with equipment, which, he said, are expensive.

“If we want to encourage the players as a commission, we can buy extra rackets to aid their practice when they come around.

“When the children come for training, we expect them to come with their personal kit, which they cannot share with others due to the peculiarity in persons, style of play and preference,” he said.

Also speaking, competition sponsor, Mr. Edim Inok, said he, as a table tennis lover and a beneficiary from sponsorships during his time as a player, is trying to set a precedence for others to support the sport in the state.

“It is not right that in Cross River, we expect government to do everything… if you are a lover of a particular sport, we can do something ourselves.

“In 1981, I represented this state in Port Harcourt in table tennis and badminton and also at Oluyole ‘79. These competitions were all sponsored by individuals and corporate organisations,” he said

Inok added that for the sports to grow, the nation needs to catch the players young.

Boxing tonight: Schedule, live stream, times for Chisora vs Parker 2, Jake Paul vs Woodley | Boxing | Sport

Derek Chisora and Joseph Parker are both going for broke when they collide in Manchester in the UK’s final boxing show before Christmas. The two heavyweights slugged it out in gruelling fashion back in May when the Kiwi edged a split decision victory on the scorecards, much to the dismay of Chisora, who believed he won the fight.

Given the lack of entertainment, there was a real lack of excitement when Eddie Hearn confirmed that the rematch had been agreed.

Yet with Chisora now out for revenge, we can expect fireworks at the Manchester Arena.

The seasoned British veteran loves to bring the heat and is not scared of being knocked out after already tasting defeat 11 times in his professional career that has also seen him rack up 32 victories.

Meanwhile, Parker has plenty to prove under new coach Andy Lee as he looks to move closer to world honours once again after previously holding the WBO title.

Lerrone Richards, Jack Cullen, Zelfa Barrett and Alen Babic are also in action on the card.

Over in the United States, YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul takes on Tyron Woodley in their rematch after Tommy Fury was forced to withdraw from the bout with a bacterial chest infection and a broken rib.

Paul is looking to move to 5-0 ahead of the contest in Tampa, Florida and this time around he’s eyeing a vicious knockout after going the distance with the former UFC star.

Woodley will earn an extra $500,000 if he manages to knock out his rival, who decided to up the stakes after appreciating Woodley’s willingness to step in for Fury at such short notice.

Here are all the details ahead of a big night of boxing…

Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving latest Brooklyn Nets players to enter NBA’s health and safety protocols

0

Brooklyn Nets stars Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving have entered the NBA’s health and safety protocols.

They give the Nets nine players in the protocols. Forward Paul Millsap entered the protocols Monday and was followed by forwards LaMarcus Aldridge, James Johnson and DeAndre’ Bembry and guard Jevon Carter on Tuesday morning. They were joined Tuesday evening by James Harden and Bruce Brown.

COVID-19 concerns and the desire to pare back Durant’s hefty workload have led the Nets to bring back Irving, who needs to return negative COVID-19 tests on five consecutive days before he can rejoin the team.

Whenever Irving is cleared to return, he will be with the team in games only in a part-time role. Because of his unvaccinated status and New York City’s vaccine mandate, Irving can play only in Brooklyn’s road games in cities that do not have similar mandates. There are 24 such games remaining on the Nets’ regular-season schedule.

Brooklyn had already planned to sit Durant for Saturday’s game against the Orlando Magic to rest his sore right ankle. The league’s top scorer at 29.7 points per game, Durant also is among the league leaders in minutes per game at 37.0, the most minutes he has averaged in eight years, since he averaged 38.5 minutes per game during the 2013-14 season.

This is not the first time Durant has been in the league’s protocols for COVID-19. He tested positive in March 2020 during the season he sat out while recovering from a ruptured Achilles tendon. Last season, he was deemed to be a close contact of someone who had tested positive and had to miss four games while he was placed in a seven-day quarantine.

Hill: Verstappen’s first-lap pass on Hamilton a clean one

0

Damon Hill said Verstappen's first-lap pass on Hamilton a clean one

One incident that went under the radar in the aftermath of the 2021 Abu Dhabi GP , the spotlight being on the late-race Safety Car period, was Max Verstappen’s first-lap pass on Hamilton. Damon Hill believes it was a clean pass.

On lap one of the Abu Dhabi race, and with Hamilton having a better start from pole-sitter Verstappen, the Dutchman caught up with the Briton and went for a bold move on the inside of Turn 6, with the #44 Mercedes taking to the run-off area and staying in the lead, the Stewards not ordering a position swap.

Red Bull objected but the Stewards upheld their decision.

With the way the race developed, the focus was instead on the way Race Director Michael Masi handled the Safety Car period after Nicholas Latifi’s lap 53 crash, which Mercedes claim handed Verstappen the victory.

Had not that debacle happened, we would have now been most probably reading about Red Bull appealing against the Stewards lap 1 decision.

A Daniel Ricciardo-style lunge

Speaking to the F1 Nation Podcast, former F1 Champion Damon Hill commented on this incident, likening to an overtake Daniel Ricciardo might pull-off, the Australian known for his deep-braking, from-far-behind overtakes.

Hill said: “The one that Max did on Lewis on lap one where he dived down the inside, took a long, massive Daniel Ricciardo-style lunge from miles back, Lewis allowed that to happen but he’s perhaps got in his mind being taken out by Max.

“So he’s thinking ‘Crikey! He’s going for it,” he went on. “I’m going to have to slightly open the door’ and Max put his wheels right down there on the inside.

“Lewis took evasive action and had no track left to play with and had to take to the escape road.

“That was a bold move but it was a move that has come on the back of a number of moves like that, that have gone unpunished or they’ve let it go so the drivers are unsure as to whether or not this is going to be the way to race or not,” the 1996 World Champion said.

“The doubt is the thing that has given us all these difficulties. It has given us uncertainty,” Hill claimed.

It was a clean pass nevertheless

The 61-year-old who won his only Championship with Williams went on: “Lewis had to take the evasive action but actually, you look at that pass and it was a clean pass.

“Actually, he was ahead, so I didn’t understand when Lewis got back on the track why he didn’t give the place back because, in a sense really, Max had got the place.

“He didn’t gain a lasting advantage on that one, that is what they said. But he kind of did, because he didn’t get overtaken when in fact he had been overtaken,” Hill mused.

A suggestion was brought up in the discussion, that gravel run-off areas would help avoid such conundrums in the future, as drivers would think twice before taking risky moves or using run-off areas to gain advantages.

Hill jokingly responded: “I’m going to take out shares in a gravel quarry somewhere!”

“They’re monitoring closely what’s going on in other provinces. We’ve had conversations around what that could look like, but at this point, nothing more than that.

“There’s no plan right now to limit fans. We continue to move forward with the plan for full buildings.”

Hockey Canada is prepared if Alberta’s government suddenly demands a curtailing of attendance.

“It’s always part of our contingency planning,” McIntosh said.

“The challenge is obviously knowing what that contingency might look like knowing you’ve got everything ranging from what the Montreal Canadiens did in Montreal to an empty building, to half-capacity in Ontario, to other derivations in between.

“All we can do is take direction, I think is our challenge.”
