Jake Paul raises fears ahead of Tyron Woodley rematch with admission | Boxing | Sport

0

Jake Paul has made a harrowing admission about the effect boxing has had on his brain, despite his professional career being just four fights old. Paul, 24 will fight again in Florida this Saturday in a rematch with former UFC star Tyron Woodley.

Paul’s comments are likely to lead to scrutiny over his desire to keep competing in the sport, especially given he also admitted to using psychedelic drugs such as DMT to battle the symptoms of CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy) – namely memory loss and slurred speech.

“You’re doing something that is detrimental to your long term health,” he continued.

“I notice it in conversations with my girlfriends or friends, not remembering something that I should be able to remember that happened a couple days ago. Sometimes in my speech, there’s like every 100th or 200th word I’ll mess up or like slur, which I didn’t do that before.

“I’ve talked to tons and tons of people about it and there’s new research and science to combat against it, things like psychedelics and toad.”

Recent Match Report – West Indies vs Pakistan 3rd T20I 2021/22

0

Pakistan 208 for 3 (Rizwan 87, Babar 79, Smith 1-34) beat West Indies 207 for 3 (Pooran 64, Brooks 49, King 43, Wasim 2-44) by seven wickets

Yet another clinical display from Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam powered Pakistan to their highest successful chase in T20I cricket as they beat West Indies by seven wickets in the third T20I in Karachi.
Batting first on a well-rolled surface, West Indies rode on Nicholas Pooran‘s 37-ball 64 and breezy 40s from Brandon King and Shamarh Brooks to post a challenging 207 for 3. But a 158-run stand between Rizwan and Babar, in just 15.1 overs, all but ensured a 3-0 scoreline.

Babar contributed 79 off 53 balls, while Rizwan was the aggressor, hitting 87 off just 45 with the help of ten fours and three sixes. During his knock, Rizwan also completed 2000 runs in T20 cricket this year. When the winning runs were scored, Pakistan still had seven balls remaining.

Earlier in the day, the game was put in jeopardy after Shai Hope, Akeal Hosein, and Justin Greaves tested positive for Covid-19 but both teams decided to go ahead with the match.

That, however, meant West Indies had to field a severely depleted side, as they were already without Sheldon Cottrell, Roston Chase and Kyle Mayers – all three had tested positive at the start of the tour – and Devon Thomas, who has a finger injury. The still put up their best performances of the series but it wasn’t enough to prevent a whitewash.

King’s birthday bash
On his 27th birthday, King decided to throw caution to the wind. He opened his account with back-to-back fours off Mohammad Nawaz in the first over. On both occasions, he gave himself room and hit the ball through the off side. That remained his modus operandi for most of his innings even as he didn’t middle the ball all the time.

Nawaz came in for more punishment in his next over. First, Brooks drilled him past mid-on and then King hit the last three balls of the over for six, four and four. From the other end, King fetched three fours across Mohammad Hasnain’s two overs, and as a result, West Indies motored to fifty in just 4.2 overs.

On the penultimate ball of the powerplay, King once again backed away and launched Mohammad Wasim Jr for a 98-metre six, the ball landing on the roof of the deep-midwicket stands. Wasim, though, made a comeback the very next ball, uprooting King’s off stump as the batter failed in his attempt to late-cut a fuller delivery.

Brooks cuts loose
West Indies finished the powerplay on 66 for 1. Brooks, who was batting on 21 off 16 balls at that point, decided it was his turn to cut loose. He skipped down the track against Nawaz but ended up skying it towards long-on, where Iftikhar Ahmed and Hasnain, running in from long-off, messed up their calling, and despite both fielders next to each other, neither got their hands to the ball.

Shadab Khan ended up paying the price for that drop as Brooks hit him for three sixes in four balls in the next over. But just like King, he too fell short of his half-century. Shahnawaz Dahani hurried him with a short ball and had him caught at deep midwicket.

Pooran propels WI further
The Pakistan bowlers had bowled West Indies out in the first two T20Is but on Thursday night, there was no respite for them. With two left-handers in the middle, Babar Azam tried to sneak in an over of offspin from Iftikhar but Pooran thumped him for two sixes.

He was equally belligerent against Hasnain, whom he took for 19 off six balls, including two sixes and a four. Pooran’s assault meant West Indies didn’t lose the momentum despite Darren Bravo struggling on 17 off 16 balls at one stage. Pooran brought up his half-century off 31 balls but after his dismissal, West Indies could score only 15 off the remaining 14 balls.

The Babar-Rizwan show
Chasing a daunting total, Babar and Rizwan didn’t have the luxury of time to get their eye in. But the two are in such good form that without taking any risk, they kept striking at around ten an over throughout their partnership. There were drives through covers and down the wicket, sweeps along the ground and over the infield, and hard-run ones and twos. Rizwan was the first to reach his half-century, off just 26 balls; Babar took 40 balls to bring up his.

While Rizwan did heave a couple over deep square leg, apart from slog-sweeping debutant Gudakesh Motie, Babar didn’t hit his first six until the 13th over. That too when Oshane Thomas provided the necessary pace. Clearing his front leg, he creamed Thomas over the wide long-off boundary before hitting the next two balls for fours.

The only chance that came West Indies’ way was when Babar went to cut Motie in the seventh over, but Pooran put down the outside edge. Babar was on 28 then, Pakistan on 62. Babar eventually fell to Odean Smith, hitting a knuckle ball to long-off, when Pakistan needed 50 from five overs.

The finishing touches
If West Indies were thinking of a comeback, Rizwan and Fakhar Zaman didn’t let that happen. When Rizwan miscued a full toss from Dominic Drakes with Pooran taking the catch near short fine leg, the equation had come down to 24 needed from 16 balls. Asif Ali (21* off 7) then hit a flurry of boundaries to level the scores. With one run required, Romario Shepherd had Asif skying the ball towards long-on where Rovman Powell dropped the catch. That one ball encapsulated the series from West Indies’ point of view: this young bunch has the potential but they still need to work on their skills.

Wolff: I won’t be at the FIA Gala out of my loyalty to Lewis

Toto Wolff won't be at the FIA Gala out of his loyalty to Lewis

Toto Wolff said after Mercedes announced they will not be proceeding with their appeal against the outcome of the 2021 Formula 1 season, that he will not be attending the FIA prize giving ceremony on Thursday.

Lewis Hamilton may never get over the pain of being ‘robbed’ of a record eighth Formula 1 title, Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff said on Thursday in comments that raised doubts about the driver’s future in the sport.

The Austrian, speaking to reporters for the first time since Sunday’s race in Abu Dhabi and after Mercedes had dropped plans to appeal, said he and Hamilton would not be attending the governing FIA’s gala awards in Paris that evening.

Attendance is mandatory for the top three drivers in the championship, with Mercedes also winning the constructors’ title for an unprecedented eighth year in a row.

Hamilton finished runner-up to Red Bull’s Max Verstappen after the Dutch driver overtook him on the last lap at Yas Marina, benefiting from a sudden change to the safety car procedure.

Mercedes need time to digest what happened

“It’s going to take a long time for us to digest what has happened on Sunday. I don’t think we will ever come over it, that’s not possible,” said Wolff.

“And certainly not him (Hamilton) as a driver. I would very much hope the two of us and the rest of the team we can work through the events… But he will never overcome the pain and the distress that was caused on Sunday.”

Asked directly whether Hamilton, who turns 37 in January, would be back next year, Wolff indicated that was not a certainty.

“I would very much hope Lewis continues racing because he is the greatest driver of all time,” he said.

“As a racer his heart will say I need to continue because he’s at the peak of his game,” he added. “But we have to overcome the pain that was caused upon him on Sunday. He is a man with clear values.”

Wolff said Mercedes technical head James Allison would be in Paris to collect the trophy.

“I won’t be there because of my loyalty to Lewis and because of my own personal integrity,” he said. (Reporting by Alan Baldwin)

Chicago Blackhawks, Kyle Beach reach settlement in sexual assault lawsuit

0

The Chicago Blackhawks and a former player who said he was sexually assaulted by an assistant coach have settled a lawsuit that eviscerated the franchise’s once-sterling reputation and shook up the NHL, bringing questions about the sport’s culture back to the forefront.

The confidential settlement was announced after the sides met Wednesday with a mediator for the first time. Former first-round pick Kyle Beach and Blackhawks CEO Danny Wirtz, the son of team owner Rocky Wirtz, participated in the Zoom session.

“The Blackhawks hope that this resolution will bring some measure of peace and closure for Mr. Beach,” the team said in a statement attributed to Rocky and Danny Wirtz, and Susan Loggans, Beach’s attorney.

“As for the Blackhawks organization, we remain steadfast in our commitment to ensure that, going forward, this team will be a beacon for professionalism, respect and integrity in our community. We remain grateful for the trust and support of the Blackhawks community, and we promise to continue working every day to earn and maintain that trust.”

NHL Players’ Association to launch independent review of Kyle Beach’s assault allegations

Loggans also is part of a second lawsuit filed in May by a former high school student whom Aldrich was convicted of assaulting in Michigan. There was no word in the joint statement about that suit.

The Blackhawks said as late as mid-May that Beach’s allegations lacked merit. But an independent review, commissioned by the team and released in October, showed the organization badly mishandled Beach’s allegations that he was assaulted by Aldrich during the team’s 2010 Stanley Cup run. Aldrich told investigators the encounter was consensual.

According to the report by Jenner & Block, the encounter between Beach, then a 20-year-old minor leaguer called up in case the Blackhawks needed help in the playoffs, and Aldrich, then 27, occurred on May 8 or 9 in 2010.

Beach told investigators that Aldrich, a video coach at the time, threatened him with a souvenir baseball bat before forcibly performing oral sex on him and masturbating on the player’s back, allegations that he also detailed in his lawsuit.

About two weeks later, on May 23, 2010, right after Chicago advanced to the Stanley Cup Final, general manager Stan Bowman, top hockey executive Al MacIsaac, team president John McDonough, executive vice president Jay Blunk and assistant GM Kevin Cheveldayoff met with coach Joel Quenneville and mental skills coach Jim Gary to discuss the allegations.

Former federal prosecutor Reid Schar, who led the investigation, said accounts of the meeting “vary significantly.” But there was no evidence that anything was done about the accusations before McDonough contacted the team’s director of human resources on June 14 — a delay that violated the franchise’s sexual harassment policy, according to Schar.

During those three weeks, Aldrich continued to work for and travel with the team. Schar said Aldrich also “made an unwanted sexual advance” toward a 22-year-old Blackhawks intern.

Bowman resigned in the wake of the independent review, and MacIsaac also departed the organization. McDonough, Blunk and Gary were already out of the NHL by the time the report was published.

Quenneville and Cheveldayoff met with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman. Quenneville then resigned as Florida Panthers coach, but Cheveldayoff remained in his position as Winnipeg general manager. The league also fined Chicago $2 million.

The fallout included top executives losing their jobs in Chicago and stretched to other teams, including Florida, where veteran coach Joel Quenneville — the coach of the Blackhawks at the time — resigned. The NHL fined Chicago $2 million.

Loggans and representatives for the Blackhawks held settlement talks in early November, meeting for about an hour. She said after those discussions that “each side had different viewpoints.”

The investigation commissioned by the team found no evidence that Rocky or Danny Wirtz were aware of the allegations before Beach’s lawsuit was brought to their attention ahead of its filing. Danny Wirtz in October said he had instructed team attorneys to seek “a fair resolution consistent with the totality of the circumstances.”

Houston Rockets coach Stephen Silas treated for dehydration

0

CLEVELAND — Rockets coach Stephen Silas was treated for dehydration in the locker room after leaving the court during the team’s 124-89 loss to the Cavaliers on Wednesday night.

Silas motioned to assistant coach John Lucas to take over the team as he walked off the floor late in the first quarter. He remained in the locker room for the remainder of the first half.

The Rockets said Silas was receiving fluids from their medical staff. Lucas continued to serve as acting coach when they returned to the floor for the third quarter, and Houston ultimately ruled out Silas for the game.

“He’s OK, he’s better,” Lucas said. “We were slowly drifting when Coach left and we lost our composure for about five minutes after. They just had us at everything.”

Silas, 48, is in his second season in charge of Houston and has a 26-73 record. He is the son of longtime NBA coach and Celtics big man Paul Silas.

Klopp won’t buy cover for Liverpool’s African Nations stars — Sport — The Guardian Nigeria News – Nigeria and World News

Jurgen Klopp has ruled out a move into the transfer market to cover for the Liverpool stars set to take part in the African Nations Cup.

Liverpool is set to lose the services of Egypt forward Mohamed Salah, Senegal winger Sadio Mane and Guinea midfielder Naby Keita when the tournament gets underway in Cameroon.

In a major blow to Liverpool’s hopes of winning the Premier League title, Klopp could be without that trio from January 9 to February 6.

But the Reds boss, whose second-placed side host Newcastle on Thursday, has no plans to make stand-in signings when the transfer window opens on January 1.

“We knew three would be qualified and be there and we knew that at least two of them will go pretty far in the tournament,” Klopp told reporters on Wednesday.

“Can you be prepared for something like that, properly, perfectly? Like a one-for-one replacement for Sadio, a replacement for Mo, one replacement for Naby?

“That’s tricky in each situation but I am happy with the squad and we have options to play and still to play football.

“We are quite confident we will find solutions.”

Klopp accepts Liverpool may not be at their best without Salah, who has been in sublime form this season, and Mane, who is back to his best after a dip last term.

But he believes they will find a way to win games to keep them in a gripping title race with leaders Manchester City and European champions Chelsea.

“Whoever will play in the period when the three boys are not here, will have a plan, and gives us a chance to win a football game,” Klopp said.

“Can we play exactly the same kind of football? Probably not – but who cares? Then we play the football we are able to play then.

“You cannot always have the perfect solution. In this case we are far away from being the perfect solution without these players but we knew it and we now we have to deal with it.”

Meanwhile Joshua still has his eyes firmly set on the rematch with his Ukrainian rival, and seems more pumped than ever after losing his titles in London.

Speaking about meeting Usyk for a second time he told iFL TV: “I have one thing in my mind, that’s war, that’s murder, that’s war, let’s go out there and hurt the guy.

“Take his soul to the point where he wants to give up. That’s what boxing’s about, I’ve learned that.

“You hit people constantly, keep on applying a certain amount of pressure, before they know it they’ll realise you aren’t going anywhere, you’re here to stay.”

Hamilton receives his knighthood

Seven times Formula 1 Champion Lewis Hamilton received his knighthood for services to motorsport on Wednesday, days after he lost out on what would have been a record eighth Title after a tense last lap at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Hamilton holds the record for most race wins with 103 while he is tied with German great Michael Schumacher on seven drivers’ championships.

The 36-year-old Briton, the sport’s only Black driver, was made a Knight Bachelor by Britain’s Price Charles during an investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle in England.

Hamilton is the fourth F1 driver to be knighted after the late Australian Jack Brabham, Stirling Moss, and triple champion Jackie Stewart, and the only one to have received the award while still racing.

Other active sportsmen who have received a knighthood are cycling’s Tour de France winner Bradley Wiggins, Olympic 5,000 and 10,000 metres gold medallist Mo Farah, twice Wimbledon champion Andy Murray and England cricketer Alastair Cook.

Hamilton lost out on the 2021 title to Red Bull driver Max Verstappen on Sunday. The two were equal on points before the final race in Abu Dhabi, where the Dutchman overtook Hamilton on the final lap to lift his maiden title. (Reporting by Rohith Nair)

Jake Paul sent Manny Pacquiao warning ahead of Tyron Woodley rematch | Boxing | Sport

0

It meant ‘The Problem Child’ had less than two weeks to find a new opponent, but fortunately, in Woodley he had a willing foe waiting in the wings.

YouTuber Paul, 22, has won all four of his professional fights to date, the latest of which came in September when he and former UFC star Woodley, 39, clashed in Cleveland.

However, despite the split verdict going in favour of Paul, many boxing fans were left questioning the call – and there was even speculation of a pre-fight clause that Woodley was not allowed to ease up on his opponent after he appeared to ease up when in the ascendancy.

‘The Chosen One’ then had to honour a bizarre pre-fight agreement, promising to get a tattoo reading ‘I love Jake Paul’ if he lost. He duly did so in small writing on his middle finger, seemingly boosting his chances of a rematch.

However, Paul then snubbed a second fight in favour of facing Fury, 24, but a heated build-up between the pair further turned sour when the Englishman pulled out, just days after publicly pleading with the American to go through with the fight.

And despite the short notice, Woodley’s coach Pedro Diaz thinks developments may favour him – and referred to boxing legend Pacquiao’s surprise defeat to Yordenis Ugas as an example.

In August, Ugas had just 11 days preparation time before facing the Philippine after the withdrawal of Errol Spence Jr, but proceeded to take a unanimous points decision. It’s a lesson that Diaz said Paul needed to take heed of.

“Boxing is not predictable. Ugas took the fight against Pacquiao at ten days notice and got the win, it’s the same this time with Woodley, so I think it’s possible he could beat Jake,” he told Betway Insider.

Diaz did however, praise Paul’s in-ring progress, and thinks he will use different tactics for the bout in Tampa, Florida, that has been billed as a ‘Leave No Doubt’ affair.

“Jake Paul has improved a lot, and I think Jake Paul is going to move a lot more in this fight than the first one because he knows what happened in the first fight when he stood in front of Tyron. Jake’s going to avoid going to war with Tyron.

“Paul is a great warrior who has been improving and developing his boxing skills and has a great team. And Woodley is a great athlete who has a lot of experience and is always in shape and ready, he’s always training, but I’d have liked Tyron to have more notice for this rematch with Paul, to have more time to train.

“Like everyone knows it’s a last minute fight, Paul has had a long full training camp and Woodley has had very little time to prepare, but it’s a more interesting fight than the first one, it’s going to be a great battle.”

Los Angeles Lakers cancel practice, will be short-handed with Talen Horton-Tucker, Dwight Howard, Malik Monk in protocols

0

LOS ANGELES — The Lakers canceled practice Tuesday after guard Talen Horton-Tucker returned a positive test for COVID-19 and entered into the league’s health and safety protocols, the team announced.

Later Tuesday night, Dwight Howard and Malik Monk also entered protocols and will miss the team’s game Wednesday vs. the Dallas Mavericks, the Lakers announced after they landed in Texas.

Monk flew with the team, but the Lakers will arrange safe transport for him back to California. Howard did not make the trip.

Rather than take the court Tuesday, team members were directed to take two tests — a rapid test and a PCR — before meeting at the airport for the trip once returning a negative result, sources told ESPN.

The Lakers news comes at a time when several team rosters have been hurt by players entering the protocols, including the Charlotte Hornets, Brooklyn Nets, Chicago Bulls and the Bucks.

The Bulls, who had two games postponed this week after 10 players were out because of the virus, are scheduled to host the Lakers on Sunday in Chicago.

Horton-Tucker was the second Lakers player to enter into the protocols this season after LeBron James spent about 48 hours away from the team because of a false positive test last month.

The third-year guard missed the first 13 games of the season after undergoing surgery on his right thumb during training camp. He had started to find his rhythm, starting the past six games for L.A. and putting up 19 points and six steals in Sunday’s win over Orlando.

The Lakers could also be without Anthony Davis for Wednesday’s game against the Mavericks. Davis, who missed the past two games with soreness in his left knee, is listed as questionable.
