Short-handed Nets force overtime, beat Raptors 131-129

0

NEW YORK (AP) — Patty Mills made a 3 to force overtime, Kevin Durant had 34 points, 13 rebounds and 11 assists, and the Brooklyn Nets beat the Toronto Raptors 131-129 on Tuesday night.

Durant was upgraded from questionable just before the game because Brooklyn has seven players in the NBA’s health and safety protocol, including starters James Harden, LaMarcus Aldridge and DeAndre’ Bembry. He responded to the last-minute add with his 14th triple-double of his career.

Brooklyn won their third straight, with Mills adding 30 points, Kessler Edwards contributing 17, Nic Claxton chipping in 16 and Blake Griffin recording 13 before fouling out in overtime.

The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for Toronto (12-15). Fred VanVleet led the Raptors with 31. Gary Trent Jr. and Pascal Siakam each finished with 25.

Scottie Barnes had 23, but missed what would have been a game-winning, buzzer-beating 3 in overtime.

Trailing by 10 entering the third quarter, Toronto outscored Brooklyn 44-25 to take a 100-91 advantage going into the fourth. But Brooklyn outscored Toronto 26-11 over the first 7:18 of the fourth quarter, regaining the lead, 109-108, on a Mills 3 with 7:12 left, and his left side 3 with 4:43 left extended the lead to 117-111.

It didn’t last. Barnes knocked down two 3s to tie the game, and Trent 3 with 1:21 left gave the Raptors a 120-117 lead, which held until Mills’ 3 with 13 seconds left forced overtime.

Father of Man United’s Shola Shoretire wants son in Super Eagles

From club twirls to fist pumps to allergies, even Tiger Woods can’t believe the similarities between him and his son, Charlie

0

Tiger Woods is returning to golf action this week. Perhaps you heard? Ten months since he rolled his SUV in a one-car crash in Los Angeles that could have cost him his leg, Woods is set to tee it up with his 12-year-old son, Charlie, at this week’s PNC Championship in Orlando.

It will be the first time Woods will be playing in front of the public since this same event a year ago. It was at the PNC that the world got to first see Charlie’s swing and see Woods’ youngest child make his first-ever eagle. The team finished seventh in the 20-team event that matches major champions with members of their family for a 36-hole competition.

What people also noticed was just how similar father and son really are on the golf course. Even Woods couldn’t help but laugh as he watched.

So, yes, we have all the important parts covered — club twirl, fist pump and scratching of nose.

Is Formula 1 a sport or is it just entertainment?

hamilton verstappen formula 1 safety car

The one thing Max Verstappen repeatedly requested that FIA race stewards not interfere with the Formula 1 title-deciding finale in Abu Dhabi with questionable or inconsistent calls.

He didn’t get his wish. And yet it played directly in his favour writes respected AP correspondent Jenna Fryer in her latest column; and asks the questions:

How you felt about it Monday depended on your view of racing. Is it sport? Or is it entertainment?

Verstappen won his first world championship Sunday at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix with a pass of Lewis Hamilton on the final lap of a riveting season. His 10th win of the year made Verstappen the first Dutch champion and denied Hamilton a record-breaking eighth title.

But it will forever be a controversial victory — Mercedes might call it tainted — because of the role race director Michael Masi played in the messy outcome.

Hamilton had a lead of nearly 12 seconds and Red Bull conceded Verstappen’s only chance was from “some luck from the racing gods” when a crash by Nicholas Latifi with five laps remaining put the ending in Masi’s control.

With the world watching, — thanks Netflix! — Masi tried to figure out what to do next.

“You only need one racing lap!” Red Bull team principal Christian Horner said in urging Masi to get Latifi’s mess cleaned up in time to give Verstappen one final shot at Hamilton.

“Michael, this isn’t right,” Toto Wolff of Mercedes objected as Masi deliberated.

“No, Mikey, no!” screamed Wolff

Masi could have sided with Wolff and let the race end behind the safety car with Hamilton cruising past Michael Schumacher into history under yellow. Or, he could have thrown a red flag, allowed all drivers to pit for new tires, and then gone green for a final shootout.

The race director waffled during his decision-making process and in that time, Verstappen indeed pitted for fresh, faster tires while Hamilton stayed out to maintain the lead.

Masi then moved the lapped traffic out of Verstappen’s way and gave him and Hamilton one final lap over 3.2 miles to decide the championship.

Verstappen caught Hamilton in Turn 5 — “No, Mikey, no!” screamed Wolff, “that was so not right!” — and held him off on his soft, fresh Pirelli tires for the title. The final lap was the only lap Verstappen led all day; Hamilton led 51 of the 58 trips around Yas Marina Circuit.

Wolff was furious but was rebuked time and again by Masi and the FIA.

Masi scolded him over the radio: “Toto, it’s called a motor race, OK? We went car racing,” and Mercedes lodged a pair of protests. It took almost five hours for the FIA to deny them both and rule the race official, and Mercedes has now asked for reconsideration from the International Court of Appeal.

Entertained yet?

F1 was already the top motorsports series in the world but its popularity has exploded in North America over the three-year run of the “Drive to Survive” behind-the-scenes Netflix docuseries. The show has removed the velvet rope for viewers and given them access like never before to teams, drivers and drama. The racing just happens to be what the stars of the show do for a living.

Few television producers would greenlight any script that called for an enthralling back-and-forth season that spanned 22 races across four continents to end under yellow. People want to be entertained and that’s what Masi gave the viewers Sunday night with the officiating decision.

But in ensuring a climactic finale to the upcoming fourth instalment of “Drive to Survive,” a decision was made that ran afoul of the purity of Formula One. The lack of gimmicks — think playoffs, green-white-checkered flag finishes, stage racing — is what open-wheel racing fans love.

Formula 1 was supposed to be above manipulations

IndyCar declined in 2020 to throw a red flag for a late crash at the Indianapolis 500 and Scott Dixon didn’t get a final challenge on Takuma Sato, who became the 11th winner in more than a century to collect the checkered flag under caution.

Conversely, since NASCAR implemented in 2007 its green-white-checkered flag rule of using multiple restarts to ensure a green-flag finish, eight of 15 Daytona 500s have been decided in overtime.

NASCAR tweaked its rules to give fans the finish they paid for, while IndyCar has resisted attempts to push it down a similar path of instant gratification. Formula 1, though, was supposed to be above manipulations and would follow its thick rulebook, boring races and all.

That’s changed since American-owned company Liberty Media became F1’s parent company in 2017 and “the way it’s always been done” no longer reigns supreme.

“THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE!!!!” tweeted George Russell

This year saw the introduction of sprint qualifying in three races, which will be doubled to six in 2022, a late red-flag followed by a final standing restart at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, and the awarding of only half points for the sixth time in F1 history when rain allowed for a measly one lap run behind the safety car in Belgium.

And yet there was still consternation in the paddock over the ending in Abu Dhabi on Sunday night.

“THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE!!!!” tweeted George Russell, who will be Hamilton’s teammate next year at Mercedes.

“Max is an absolutely fantastic driver who has had an incredible season and I have nothing but huge respect for him, but what just happened is absolutely unacceptable. I cannot believe what we’ve just seen,” added Russell, who retired from the race and was a spectator for the finish.

Maybe it wasn’t pure racing and, in the end, unacceptable for F1 standards. But it sure was entertaining and will be talked about forever.

Hence the question: Is Formula 1 a sport or is it just entertainment?

Top athletes warm up for third Valuejet Para Table Tennis Open | The Guardian Nigeria News

Top athletes within and outside the country are gearing up for the third edition Valuejet Para Table Tennis Open. The championship holds later this month in Lagos.

The three-day championship, which is expected feature players from Benin Republic and Togo, is being organised by the Sunday Odebode Foundation in collaboration with the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF) and Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC).

According to a board member of the NTTF, Anderson Bankole, the event will continue to produce new athletes, especially with upcoming players coming through the ranks and files. Some of them are making it to the top 10 in the latest world ranking.

“I must commend the sponsors of this championship for sustaining the sponsorship this year. I hope our players can make use this tournament to improve themselves.

“We are also hoping that the tournament would get listed by the International Table Tennis Federation in 2022,” he said, adding he was optimistic that some new players would emerge at the end of the competition.

Speaking on the competition, the coordinator, Odebode, said the organisers are making frantic efforts to ensure that the championship is listed by the ITTF as a ranking event.

Meanwhile, former African champion, Isau Ogunkunle, has expressed excitement for the upcoming event, saying he can’t wait any longer to compete again at the top level in front of fans.

“I am so excited that we are having to play another top-class tournament after Tokyo 2020. It was at this same competition we prepared for Tokyo and this time around we have players coming up and it is another chance to show why I am the best in the class,” said the Paralympian.

Another top player, Faith Obazuaye, said, “the tournament has remained the only rallying point for top players in the country. I believe we are using this tournament to get our shape in top form for major events. I must commend the sponsors for keeping faith with the yearly sponsorship. I am looking forward to retaining my title again this year”.

Dallas Mavericks’ Luka Doncic to miss 3rd straight game because of ankle soreness

0

Dallas Mavericks superstar Luka Doncic will miss his third straight game Wednesday against the Los Angeles Lakers because of left ankle soreness, the team announced Tuesday.

Doncic sprained that ankle on Nov. 15, missed the next three games and has dealt with persistent soreness since. He turned the ankle again during Friday’s road loss to the Indiana Pacers and was held out for back-to-back games against the Oklahoma City Thunder and Charlotte Hornets this week — both of which the Mavericks won. Dallas had been 0-4 without the All-Star guard this season.

Doncic, who also sat out a Dec. 4 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies because of left ankle soreness, said after Friday’s game that he probably shouldn’t have finished the game.

“I probably shouldn’t have played the fourth [quarter],” said Doncic, who waved off a substitute after turning the ankle during the third quarter but was noticeably limping and grimacing. “I wasn’t feeling very good, but I tried to be out there.”

Chris Boucher leads Raptors in rout of Kings

0

TORONTO – The Toronto Raptors capped off a seven-game homestand with their fourth win and three season highs on Monday.

Chris Boucher scored 17 as the Raptors poured in a season-high 70 points in the first half to cruise to a 124-101 win against the Sacramento Kings before 19,463 at Scotiabank Arena.

Not only did their 70-point opening half surpass the 67 they scored in the second half against the Memphis Grizzlies on Nov. 24, but the Raptors also set season highs in bench points with 53 and team assists at 28. The previous highs in those categories were 38 bench points in Golden State on Nov. 21 and 27 assists, a mark hit twice this fall.

“That was a good one,” Raptors guard Fred VanVleet said. “You probably get a couple of those a year. It seemed like we have seen a lot of those in the past, but we’ll take what we can get.

“I thought we came out with a professional approach, set the tone early, and we were just able to control it from there. But everybody who stepped on the floor tonight contributed in a major way.”

All five Toronto starters scored in double figures. In addition to Boucher’s 17, Scottie Barnes and Pascal Siakam popped in 16 points apiece. VanVleet scored 12, and Gary Trent Jr. added 10.

“When they play with that much pace and energy, they were just everywhere,” Raptors coach Nick Nurse said. “They were cutting really hard on offence. They were jarring the ball away, running hard.

“All five of them were just bringing tremendous energy, and that’s kinda what they have to do, and when they do it, they can do a really good job out three.

“That was a heckuva run they put up and a great job by the bench. Nine guys in double figures, that’s pretty cool.”

Four players off the bench also hit double figures with Malachi Flynn checking in for 14 points, followed by Yuta Watanabe with 12, Shi Mykhailiuk at 11 and Justin Champagne at 10.

Da’Aaron Fox scored a game-high 29 points for the Kings (11-17), who have dropped five of their last eight games. Veteran Kings head coach Alvin Gentry described his team’s performance as “embarrassing.”

“I’ll take responsibility because I’m supposed to have them prepared,” said Gentry. “It’s my job to have them prepared. We’re going to keep plugging away at it.”

Watanabe also grabbed 10 rebounds for Toronto for the first double-double of his career.

“I’m not gonna lie, I was gassed at the end,” said Watanabe, who played the last 16 minutes. “That’s how it should be. Every time I get on the court, I work hard, bring energy. After every game, I should be gassed.”

Watanabe looked at the score clock with about four minutes left and saw he had nine rebounds, “so I went for it. I’m really proud of myself.”

The Raptors lost Canadian Dalano Banton for the second half with what the team described as a non-COVID-related illness. He will not travel with the team to visit the Brooklyn Nets on Tuesday.

The Raptors found out earlier Monday that their home game against the Chicago Bulls on Thursday was postponed. Ten Chicago players and some staff were placed in the league’s COVID-19 health and safety protocols.

Forward Precious Achiuwa missed the outing against Sacramento because of COVID-19 health and safety protocols. Also absent from the Toronto lineup were OG Anunoby (left hip pointer), Khem Birch (right ankle) and David Johnson (left calf strain).

Brooklyn Nets’ Kevin Durant drops NBA season-best 51 in win over Pistons

0

In his most explosive outing with the Brooklyn Nets, Kevin Durant scored the most points in an NBA game this season, going off for 51 in a 116-104 win over the Pistons on Sunday at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit.

With James Harden resting for the first time this season, Durant joined Golden State’s Stephen Curry as the only players with a 50-point game this season.

Durant made 16 of 31 shots from the field, including five 3-pointers, and had 9 assists, 7 rebounds and 2 blocked shots to overwhelm the Pistons, who lost for the 12th straight time.

“Kevin was incredible,” Nets coach Steve Nash said. “Not an easy night. They played extremely hard. Tons of energy. We were playing different lineups. Think there were different guys out there at different times trying to find the spacing and spots and where to be, and so there were some challenges there for us. For him to be able to score 51 and 9 assists, 7 rebounds, 2 blocks and steal. Unbelievable.”

With the Nets using their ninth starting lineup this season — Harden, Paul Millsap (personal reasons), Joe Harris (left ankle surgery) and Kyrie Irving (not with team) were out — Durant remained their one constant force.

In 25 games this season, he is leading the NBA in scoring at 29.4 points per game. Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo is second at 27.3. Curry, who scored 50 points against Atlanta on Nov. 8, is third in scoring at 27.1.Durant and Curry are two of the favorites to win league MVP and the scoring title this season.

For Durant, this was the eighth time in his career that he has scored 50 points but first with the Nets.

Durant said he did not feel added responsibility to score with Harden resting.

“I feel like we got enough scoring,” Durant said. “I feel like defensively we come out and stick to the game plan, play physical, then the offense will take care of itself. We went cold there for a second, so I figured that I should be more aggressive.”

He made 7 of 8 shots and scored 16 points in the third quarter, including the first 13 points for the Nets in the quarter.

“It was very special,” Nets point guard Patty Mills said. “Obviously, special for him, but I think it’s special for everyone that was able to take part in that and be up close and personal to what happened tonight.”

Undecided Mercedes have until Thursday to appeal

Mercedes may not go through with their appeal

Mercedes have protested the results of the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on Sunday, only for the FIA/Stewards to dismiss their protests, to which the World Champions responded by announcing their intention to appeal.

However, The Times has reported that Mercedes are considering not going through with their appeal, with their reasoning being “putting the reputation of the sport before their desire to see their driver crowned world champion for the eighth time”, always according to the times.

What happened after the race in brief

Hamilton has lost out on a record breaking eighth Formula 1 World Title in Abu Dhabi on Sunday after losing out to title rival and eventual Champion Max Verstappen on the last lap of what must have been one of the most controversial races in recent history.

His team, evidently not happy with the outcome, lodged two protests, 30 minutes after the race ended accusing Verstappen of overtaking the Briton under the Safety Car, and objecting to the racing director Michael Masi’s administration of the Safety Car period.

Both protests where dismissed with Mercedes announcing their intent to appeal.

Red Bull getting ready despite the withdrawal rumours

Reports have emerged from Sky Sports F1, the Red Bull will not take anything for granted, and that team boss Christian Horner has flown out of the United Arab Emirates immediately to work on the team’s defense against the expected Mercedes appeal.

Sky Sports’ Craig Slater said that he was informed of Horner’s departure as he was looking to interview him on Monday morning, also reporting the Red Bull top man Dietrich Mateschitz is also involved in the process.

This information was shared in a video on Twitter, by Sky Sports news.

Mercedes have till Thursday

Also according to Slater, Mercedes will have to act fast should they decide to see the appeal through, as Thursday in the day of the FIA Gala where Max Verstappen will be receiving his F1 Drivers’ Championship trophy.

Mercedes have been silent from Sunday evening, and have not issued any press releases post-race, as a video emerged on Twitter showing team boss Toto Wolff and soon to be Alfa Romeo driver Valtteri Bottas partying in Abu Dhabi.
