Raptors hold on to beat Knicks 90-87

0

TORONTO – On a night that wasn’t particularly pretty for the Toronto Raptors, the frantic final minute was all about sheer will on defence.

And that had Fred VanVleet smiling.

Gary Trent Jr., poured in 24 points, including a key three-pointer with just over a minute to play, and the Raptors held on for a 90-87 victory over New York on Friday, their 12th consecutive victory against the Knicks in Toronto.

“I’ll take it,” laughed VanVleet, who’d been angry at his team’s effort in a one-point loss to Oklahoma City two nights earlier.

“Wasn’t a perfect game by any stretch, but I think some of us understand the offence is going to be an ‘adventure’ — that’s what Nick (Raptors coach Nurse ) and I like to call it,” he added. “But defensively man, we really fought and scrapped and I thought that we just deserved to win tonight.”

VanVleet had 17 points and 11 assists, while rookie Scottie Barnes had a career-high 15 rebounds to go with 12 points for the undermanned Raptors (12-14) who beat the Knicks for the 12th consecutive time in Toronto. Pascal Siakam had 13 points on a rough 3-for-18 shooting night, but hauled down 12 boards, while Chris Boucher chipped in with 14 points.

Canadian RJ Barrett, who according to broadcasters had 1,000 passes for family and friends to the game, and Obi Toppin led the Knicks (12-14) with 19 points apiece.

On the Knicks’ final few possessions, the Raptors made “double and triple the amount of stops we needed, we couldn’t get the ball,” VanVleet said — on one play, the ball bounced off his foot and out of bounds.

The Raptors amassed a 20 point-lead in the first quarter on Friday and appeared headed for an easy victory.

But the Knicks — who started the day in 11th in the Eastern Conference, one spot ahead of Toronto — had other plans. The Raptors led 69-65 to start the fourth quarter, but Toppin’s three-pointer tied it up four minutes into the frame to groans from the Scotiabank Arena crowd.

VanVleet brought them to their feet with a three-pointer for a five-point lead with 4:29 to play, then Siakam fed a slashing Barnes for a dunk to make it six points with about three minutes to play.

Barrett had five points of a 7-0 Knicks run that put the visitors up by a point, but Trent connected from long distance for an 89-87 advantage with 1:11 to play.

Siakam missed a jumper, Julius Randle missed on his three-point attempt, and then down by three with 0.2 on the clock, Barrett clanged a three-point attempt off the rim.

“Coach has been harping on defence,” Trent said. “We’ve been working at it, we’ve been getting after it. Every day when we come in, we’re putting the pieces together, slowly but surely figuring it out.”

Nurse had been similarly angry after Wednesday’s loss, but was pleased with his team’s hustle on Friday.

“Just the loose balls and offensive rebounds and stuff are a good sign,” he said. “We really needed to play with that kind of (energy). Well, we have to, we have to win the 50/50 balls and we’ve to get on the glass to get some extra possessions, and I thought we did that all night coming up with loose balls, a lot of deflections, it seemed like. Tipped a lot of passes, made a lot of passes not quite on target because of our high hands and things like that.”

The Raptors were outrebounded 55-48, but forced the Knicks into 15 turnovers.

The Raptors got off to a hot start, hitting five-three pointers in the first quarter, including one by Trent, that put gave them a 20-point lead. Toronto led 34-14 to start the second.

The Knicks’ bench scored 20 points in the second to fuel a 29-9 New York run, and when Immanuel Quickley drained a three-pointer to tie the game, players on the Knicks bench leapt to their feet in celebration. The Raptors closed the quarter with an 11-3 run punctuated by a Siakam dunk with a half second on the clock, and Toronto went into the halftime break up 50-42.

Barrett had nine points in the third quarter, including five straight that put the Knicks up by a point.

The 21-year-old from Mississauga, Ont., is rounding into form after missing a couple of games earlier this month due to a non-COVID illness that Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau said took a toll on the No. 3 pick in the 2019 draft. Barrett missed one game and had to leave another after just eight minutes.

The Raptors continue to battle injuries. OG Anunoby missed his 11th game with a hip injury, while Khem Birch sat for the seventh straight game with knee swelling, and Precious Achiuwa was also sidelined (shoulder tendinitis).

The Raptors also had a COVID-19 scare. The team cancelled practice on Thursday out of an “abundance of caution” after team president and vice-chairman Masai Ujiri tested positive for COVID-19. Ujiri, who is fully vaccinated including a booster shot, said it was later learned that there were positive tests at his Giants of Africa event on Sunday.

“Superfan” Nav Bhatia missed his first Raptors home game, ending a 26-year streak. Bhatia attended Ujiri’s Giants of Africa event, and so is in isolation in accordance with a Toronto Public Health order.

The Raptors were hit hard by the pandemic last March while playing in Tampa, Fla. Missing numerous key players, they tumbled down the Eastern Conference and missed the playoffs.

The Raptors host the Sacramento Kings on Monday in their final game of a season-long seven-game homestand.

Jake Paul ‘p***** off’ at Tommy Fury and launches incredible attack on John Fury | Boxing | Sport

“I think it would be hilarious,” Paul admitted.

“I was hoping he would punch the TV [during their press conference]. If he did that it would have been one of the most legendary press conference moments ever, so he’s kind of a p**** for not.”

WBC champion Tyson was set to be in his brother’s corner at the event in Florida after training the 7-0 boxer ahead of the clash.

Paul sent a warning to the world heavyweight champion and refused to rule out the two meeting in the ring: “I’ll fight the whole family. If Tyson moves down to cruiserweight, I’ll fight Tyson, no problem.”

Paul defeated fellow YouTuber AnEsonGib, former NBA star Nate Robinson, retired MMA fighter Ben Askren and former UFC champion Tyron Woodley in his previous bouts.

Woodley has been announced as Paul’s new opponent, with the two men set to reignite their feud that preceded their clash in August.

Lagos to host multiple world sporting championships In 2022 — LSSC | The Guardian Nigeria News

0

The Chairman, Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC), Sola Aiyepeku, yesterday, said the state would host major World sporting Championships in 2022.

Ayepeku said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the sidelines of the closing ceremony of the Asa Sports Week, held at the Mobolaji Johnson Sports Centre, Rowe Park, Yaba.

The LSSC hosted a four-day Traditional Sport Fiesta, tagged “Asa Week,” which comprised indigenous games invented in the state and other states of the federation.

Aiyepeku stated that the drive by the state government to positively harness the strength of the youths is already yielding positive results as more youths are now engaged in sporting activities.

“If we engage them positively, all these vices, like `Yahoo Yahoo,’ will be turned into positive energy that we can be proud of, and that is why we have increased the number of sporting competitions in Lagos.

“Lagos State has agreed to host at least one major World Championship for each sport come next year. Our governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has given us the best incentive to achieve that,” he said.

Aiyepeku explained that Lagos State aims to achieve its objective of expanding its frontiers in sports by investing heavily in sports infrastructure.

“Lagos State government is demonstrating commitment to sports by embarking on provision of massive sporting infrastructure all over the state. Our eight stadia project is on course and also the Teslim Balogun Stadium is undergoing renovation. These projects are being handled by the Lagos State Sports Trust Fund, and not by the government.

“The Sports Trust Fund was established to promote and fund capital projects in Lagos. The government has recognised that sports is a youth thing and will continue to give it the necessary attention it deserves. Majority of those that come to watch sporting activities are the youths,” he said.

The five-day event aimed at engendering the indigenous games amongst youths in the state. The sporting activities featured workshop for coaches and other technical personnel, from Dec. 6 to 10.

The five sporting events, namely; Ayo olopon, Kokowa, (Traditional Wrestling), Lambe, (Traditional Boxing), Langa (Traditional Hopping) and Abula (Traditional Volleyball) were competed for at championships.

Horner: One of Max’s best laps of the year, now to convert

0

horner pleased wiuth pole winner max verstappen abu dhabi grand prix

Christian Horner was well pleased with Max Verstappen’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix pole position winning lap, labelling it the best of the year as their star driver put himself on the front foot ahead of the race that will decide the 2021 Formula 1 World Champion.

Verstappen nearly delivered the lap of the year last time out in Saudi Arabia but messed up. This time, at Yas Marina Circuit, he made amends delivering a flawless lap that was three tenths up on Hamilton’s best effort and tellingly, early a second up on Sergio Perez in the sister car.

Verstappen was in another league on Saturday; Horner agreed: “That was one of Max’s best laps of the year, but now we need to try and convert that tomorrow.

“Both runs in Q3 were exceptional and it was great teamwork from Checo to give him the tow as he did, it was worth a tenth or two, but not half a second. Max has given it his all and is driving his heart out, he’s thrown everything at it.

“Credit has to be given to Checo, he has been a real dutiful teammate and sacrificed his laps tonight, we can’t ask for more than that,” added Horner.

We’re not overly upset to be starting on the softs

While Perez did appear to be in front of Verstappen, it was not close enough to give a significant tow, with calculations indicating the #33 car was an extra 2 kph through the speed-trap which hardly accounted for the gap. Nevertheless, the intent to help his younger teammate was here from the Mexican veteran.

The downside for Red Bull is that Verstappen flat-spotted his medium Pirellis during a second, unnecessary, Q2 run which prompted Red Bull to shift the race strategy to the red band Pirelli softs, instead of the medium tyres which was their original intent; also the rubber which the Mercs will be starting on.

However, this reality did not stress Horner: “When we discussed strategies this morning we were very much 50/50, so we’re not overly upset to be starting on the softs, the medium is a bit more robust but it’ll be interesting to see how it plays out.

“Track position will also be crucial given the degradation. We’ve just got to get our heads down and run our best race tomorrow, as we know how good Mercedes are around this track, it’s one of Lewis’ strongest circuits, so we need to focus on ourselves and hopefully we’ll do enough to win it,” added Horner.

His team face a tough task to overturn the 28 points deficit to Mercedes in this final race; thus the full focus will on Verstappen’s quest to be F1 Champion for the first time, which he would be should he finish ahead of Hamilton or if the Briton does not score points on the day.

Bill Russell memorabilia nets more than $5.3 million at auction

0

BOSTON — The jersey that Boston Celtics Hall of Famer Bill Russell wore for his final game — the 1969 NBA Finals clincher that earned him his 11th championship — sold for more than $1.1 million at an auction held Friday night at the TD Garden.

Other lots drawing spirited bidding included Russell’s first championship ring, which went for $705,000, and his 1956 Olympic gold medal, which sold for $587,500. Russell’s five NBA MVP trophies were also up for auction, with their combined sale prices topping $1.3 million.

The auction featured 429 lots accumulated by Russell over a career in which he won two NCAA titles, 11 NBA championships in 13 years and the 1956 Olympic gold medal. The top 18 items alone brought in more than $5.3 million.

Russell was also active in the civil rights movement, marching with Martin Luther King Jr. and standing with Muhammad Ali when he was stripped of his heavyweight title for refusing induction into the Vietnam War. A page from Russell’s scrapbook that included a signed letter from Jackie Robinson sold for $94,000.

The 87-year-old Russell has pledged some of the proceeds to MENTOR, which connects young people with advisers who can provide them with opportunities they might otherwise miss, and to the Boston Celtics United for Social Justice, which fights racial injustice and social inequities in the Greater Boston area.

Boxing tonight: Schedules, live streams, fight times for Benn vs Algieri, Katie Taylor | Boxing | Sport

0

Conor Benn will aim to keep his momentum going tonight when he takes on veteran Chris Algieri at the M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool. Chief support is provided by Irish superstar Katie Taylor, who will defend her hoard of world title belts against Firuza Sharipova.

Benn has only been out of the ring for three months after a unanimous decision victory over Adrian Granados back in September.

The Greenwich-born welterweight had stirred up a fair amount of excitement before that with a first-round TKO over Samuel Vargas, who himself had faced the likes of Danny Garcia and Errol Spence Jr.

After a short time out, Benn is ready to take to the ring again tonight against 37-year-old Chris Algieri, where the Englishman’s WBA Continental welterweight title will be on the line.

The American has three losses on his record, although with Manny Pacquiao, Amir Khan and Spece Jr. the only trio to claim victory, a win would leave Benn in esteemed company.

Algieri has only fought once since 2019, however, so Benn, as the more active fighter, should feel confident about extending his 19-0 record in Liverpool.

Also fighting is undisputed world lightweight champion Taylor, who takes on Firuza Sharipova on the undercard.

The 27-year-old, from Kazakhstan, has one blemish on her record, although that came in her very first fight in 2016.

Since then, she has strung together 14 consecutive victories.

Here are all the important details…

Schedules

Liverpool (M&S Bank Arena)

Conor Benn vs Chris Algieri

Katie Taylor vs Firuza Sharipova

Preliminary undercard bouts are expected to get underway at 4pm GMT, while the main undercard is scheduled to begin at 6pm GMT.

Ring walks for the main event, involving Conor Benn and Chris Algieri, are expected at around 10pm GMT.

Trent Jr. scores 24, Raptors beat struggling Knicks 90-87

0

TORONTO (AP) — Gary Trent Jr. scored 24 points, Fred VanVleet had 17 points and 11 assists, and the Toronto Raptors won their 10th straight home meeting against New York on Friday night, beating the Knicks 90-87.

Scottie Barnes had 12 points and a career-high 15 rebounds and Pascal Siakam had 13 points and 12 rebounds for the Raptors, who let a 20-point first quarter lead slip away but held on to win their third in four games.

Toronto has held its opponent below 100 points in four of its past five games.

“Coach has been harping on defense,” Trent said. “We’ve been working at it, we’ve been getting after it. Every day when we come in, we’re putting the pieces together, slowly but surely figuring it out.”

The Knicks’ Obi Toppin scored a career-high 19 points and added 10 rebounds, Julius Randle had 13 points and 14 rebounds, and RJ Barrett scored 19 points.

New York trailed 30-10 less than 10 minutes into the game and lost for the sixth time in their past eight.

“It’s a shame not to come out of here with a win, but the way we started the game really hurt us,” Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau said.

The Knicks also fell behind by double digits in the first half of Wednesday’s loss at Indiana.

“We’ve got to have our intensity going from the beginning of the game,” Barrett said. “We can’t let teams come in and hit us first before we decide to wake up and play.”

Barrett’s 3 with 2:48 remaining brought the Knicks to within three at 86-83, and his driving shot on the next possession made it a one-point game with 2:05 to go.

After Trent committed an offensive foul, Derrick Rose made a jump shot to give the visitors an 87-86 lead, but Trent’s 3 with 1:11 left put Toronto back on top, 89-87.

Trent’s big shot came after Barnes grabbed the rebound on VanVleet’s miss. Toronto finished with 48 rebounds to New York’s 55.

“We outrebounded them but we gave up costly ones when it counted the most,” Thibodeau said.

Both teams missed shots before Randle’s potential game-winning 3 rimmed out with 3.2 seconds to play. Trent was fouled and made one of two, putting Toronto up 90-87 with 0.6 seconds to go. Barrett got a shot off before the buzzer, but it fell short.

“Definitely a great look for what we had on the clock,” Barrett said.

Siakam shot 3 for 13 in the first half, and finished 3 for 18, but went 7 for 8 at the line.

“Just one of those nights for him, not quite knocking them down,” Raptors coach Nick Nurse said. “But I thought he played a really good game.”

The Raptors led 31-14 after one, with five of their nine made baskets coming from 3-point land. Things changed in the second, and Immanuel Quickley’s 3 with 4:43 left in the half capped a 29-9 Knicks run over two quarters that tied the score at 39-39. Siakam scored the final four points of the half, and Toronto led 50-42 at the intermission.

The Raptors took a 69-65 lead to the fourth.

CHECK YOUR HEALTH

One day after Raptors president Masai Ujiri announced he was among those to test positive for COVID-19 after attending his charity gala Sunday, Toronto Public Health asked anyone at Sunday’s sold-out game against Washington to self-monitor for symptoms for 10 days. The Raptors have announced capacity crowds of 19,800 at all 14 home games this season.

ISOLATION PLAY

Raptors super fan Nav Bhatia missed a home game for the first time in franchise history, staying home to isolate because he was at the Ujiri’s charity gala. “My heart is breaking right now,” Bhatia wrote in an Instagram post. Bhatia gave his baseline ticket to actor Kal Penn, who intends to produce and star in a movie about Bhatia, the first fan inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

DRAWING A CROWD

The Toronto-born Barrett had almost 1,000 friends and family at the game, his second in Toronto. Barrett had 300 friends and family in the crowd for his first pro game there in November 2019.

Benzema fit for Madrid derby says Ancelotti | The Guardian Nigeria News

0

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti said Saturday that forward Karim Benzema, who injured a leg last weekend against Real Sociedad, “will play” the derby against Atletico Madrid on Sunday.

“Benzema trained today, he has good feelings, he is available and he will play tomorrow,” Ancelotti told a press conference.

The derby is already crucial for the race for the title.

Victory would put Real Madrid 13 points ahead of reigning champions Atletico at the top of the standings.

“If we win, we will simply have three points more than a direct opponent, who will be fighting with us until the end, I am sure,” Ancelotti said.

“The statistics say that there are only three points at stake, but there is also the emotional aspect,” he added.

“It’s a game that the fans of both teams live in a special way. I don’t want to add to it, because there is already a lot of pressure on both teams. We are confident and we play well lately, but it’s good to have pressure,” he said

“If La Liga ended today, it would be over. But unfortunately, we still have six months to play. Until today, we have been the best, of course. But what concerns us is the future, not the past”, said Ancelotti.

Horner: Max the lad versus Mercedes the machine

Horner: Max the lad versus Mercedes the machine Max Verstappen of Netherlands and Red Bull Racing looks on at the Red Bull Racing team photo during previews ahead of the F1 Grand Prix of Abu Dhabi at Yas Marina Circuit on December 09, 2021 in Abu Dhabi

Red Bull team boss Christian Horner has billed his star driver Max Verstappen as a brave underdog up against the Lewis Hamilton led “machine” that is mighty Mercedes in the battle for the 2021 Formula 1 Title.

Ahead of F1’s Clash of the Titans, the Dutch driver is level on points with Mercedes’ seven times World Champion, but ahead of the Briton 9-8 on wins, going into Sunday’s decisive season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix showdown.

Horner said Hamilton, the most successful driver of all time, had used “every tool available to him” to put Verstappen under huge pressure and had been “backed up by the Mercedes media machine.”

“What you’ve got to remember about Max is that he’s just a young lad,” he told reporters.

“He’s a 24-year-old that drives with bravery, with passion, with skill, with determination. He’s just a guy living his dream and doing his job. And he’s up against not only Lewis but a huge machine in Mercedes-Benz.”

Horner: Mercedes F1 team have become a machine in the last seven or eight years

The Red Bull team are owned by the Austrian energy drink company, a private conglomerate with global sales of 6.3 billion euros ($7.11 billion) last year.

The Mercedes F1 team is owned in equal parts by parent company Daimler, team principal Toto Wolff and petrochemicals giant Ineos.

Both are well-funded and having to reduce spending to comply with a budget cap of $145 million that is still far more than some rivals have available.

Horner said there had been a “very clear narrative” in the run-up to Abu Dhabi with Verstappen, in the spotlight for his aggressive and uncompromising approach to racing, depicted as ‘Mad Max’.

Horner: I can’t believe it’s particularly comfortable being beaten by an energy drinks manufacturer

He said Mercedes had more marketing people than Red Bull had mechanics and suggested the German manufacturer was irked at being beaten by his outfit.

“If you think of the size of Mercedes globally…the power that they wield with media around the world, I think we pale into insignificance in comparison.

“The Mercedes Formula 1 team have become a machine in the last seven or eight years during their period of dominance and obviously have the weight and power of the parent company behind them.

“I can’t believe it’s particularly comfortable being beaten by an energy drinks manufacturer,” ventured Horner.

Mercedes have won the last seven F1 drivers’ and F1 constructors’ championships, following on from Red Bull’s four in a row from 2010 to 2013. (Reporting by Alan Baldwin)

Boxing: 5 heavyweight fights that could happen in 2022 after WBC order Tyson Fury vs Whyte | Boxing | Sport

0

Where does Tyson Fury’s win leave the world heavyweight scene?

The WBC have now officially ordered Tyson Fury to defend his green strap against mandatory challenger and British rival Dillian Whyte in light of the news that the Gypsy King’s camp had begun step-aside talks with Anthony Joshua, ahead of a potential undisputed clash with Oleksandr Usyk. Now the heavyweight landscape has just become a lot clearer and Express Sport assesses five bouts that could materialise in the new year…

Tyson Fury vs Dillian Whyte

The two camps now have 30 days to negotiate a deal or the fight will go to purse bids.

Fury has already made it clear that despite Whyte’s gruelling wait for a world title shot, he will take no prisoners when they trade leather in a long-awaited grudge match.

The all-British dust-up may not be the sexiest fight in the division but the build up promises to be spectacular following several foul-mouthed online spats between the pair.

Whyte was forced to withdraw from his fight with Otto Wallin on Halloween at the O2 Arena while Fury will come into the bout after one of the best wins of his career against Deontay Wilder in the final chapter of their historic trilogy.

Ring rust could play a part in this fight and with Fury on the greatest run of his career, there is no denying Whyte is a massive underdog. But that won’t phase him.

Cardiff and Manchester are two possible destinations for this fight on the basis of reports, while London cannot be ruled out.

Tyson Fury and Dillian Whyte

Oleksandr Usyk vs Anthony Joshua 2

If Fury and Whyte’s teams are able to negotiate a deal, we are now all set to see the rematch between Usyk and Joshua take place in early 2022.

AJ did admit that he’d be willing to consider stepping aside if the offer from Fury’s team made financial sense but redemption for his defeat at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is what matters most.

Joshua may need to shake up his corner if he is to maximise his chances of becoming a three-weight world champion after being totally outclassed by the slick southpaw in late September.

In the other corner, Usyk isn’t fussed who he fights next as he looks to make his first successful defence of his belts.

The rematch could land in London again, while there is also talk of Saudi Arabia, where Joshua beat Andy Ruiz Jr in their rematch in December 2019.

Anthony Joshua Usyk

Anthony Joshua will rematch Oleksandr Usyk in 2022, barring any late changes (Image: GETTY)

Undisputed

It’s the fight everyone wants to see and there is now a very strong chance it happens in late 2022.

The winner of Fury vs Whyte and the victor from Usyk vs Joshua are on course to meet later in the year, providing there are no complications with each fight.

In an ideal world, British fans will get to see the fight that was taken away from them in August – Fury vs Joshua, for all the marbles.

The saga rumbled on for over six months before Fury’s arbitration with Wilder threw a major spanner in the works, as he was ordered to rematch the Alabaman.

Fury vs Joshua remains the biggest fight in boxing history but there now seems to be a reasonable chance we never get to see it.

Joshua claims he would still be down to fight Fury even without any belts but the Gypsy King is unlikely to hand him the opportunity as champion, if he is not bringing anything to the table in terms of belts.

Both Whyte and Usyk will be keen to point out they are no stepping stone and if the history of this division is anything to go by, expect the unexpected.

heavyweight fights 2022

Deontay Wilder vs Andy Ruiz Jr

This is an easy matchup to make given the duo both fight on PBC in the United States.

Ruiz Jr has already laid it on record that he would be keen to face Wilder next – meaning any final decision on a fight could simply rest with the Bronze Bomber.

That’s because Wilder is yet to fully commit to fighting on after his 11-round war with Fury in Las Vegas in October, a fight that is likely to take its toll on his body.

Should Wilder decide to continue, a competitive fight against Ruiz could be the perfect way to ease his way back in.

It’s still a dangerous fight but ultimately, it’s one he should win if he has aspirations of facing Joshua and Usyk further down the line.

Deontay Wilder and Andy Ruiz Jr

Joe Joyce vs Luis Ortiz

2021 was looking so positive for Joe Joyce after his impressive stoppage of Daniel Dubois in November 2020 but for one reason or another, things have not worked out for The Juggernaut.

He did successfully stop another top 15 contender in Carlos Takam earlier in the year but Joyce was on course to face Usyk in a final eliminator before the WBO ordered Joshua to defend his belts against the Ukrainian in the summer.

With Fury now set to face Whyte and Usyk rematching Joshua, Joyce’s world title aspirations have hit another snag.

In the meantime, he needs to stay busy and what better way to do so than stepping inside the ropes with Luis Ortiz.

The Cuban has shared the ring with the likes of Wilder (twice) and Whyte in his time but this is still a winnable fight for Joyce.

His co-promoter Sam Jones has already pul the feelers out but Ortiz has a New Years Day showdown with Charles Martin to get out the way first.

Should he fail to beat the former IBF world champion, Martin could also be a suitable opponent for Joyce.
