Orlando Magic say Jalen Suggs to have thumb reevaluated every two weeks

0

Orlando Magic rookie Jalen Suggs will not need surgery on his fractured right thumb and will be reevaluated every two weeks before a decision is made on his return to the court, the team said Tuesday.

Per the Magic, Suggs’ return “will ultimately depend on the healing of the bone.”

Suggs fractured the thumb during Monday night’s 101-96 loss at the Philadelphia 76ers.

The fifth overall pick in this year’s draft out of Gonzaga, he has been a bright spot for the four-win Magic, averaging 12.3 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.6 assists in 21 games.

Wolff: Both F1 titles are wide open, our mission is clear

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff made no mention of Red Bull, their title rivals, in his preview of this weekend’s inaugural Saudi Arabian Grand Prix focussing on his team’s performance while paying tribute to Sir Frank Williams who passed this week.

Championship pressure, of the type the glorious 2021 Formula 1 season has witnessed, on Mercedes is relatively foreign to Wolff, although he does know what losing is about, his induction into F1 was with Williams – once Kings of F1 – were in freefall at the time of his arrival on the scene.

Thereafter his journey to become Mercedes team boss is well told, the titles have been non-stop since 2014, while just about every record related to team dominance has been shattered under Wolff’s watch..

Not since the inception of the current turbo-hybrid F1 rules has it been so close between two rival teams, prior to this it was Mercedes driver versus Mercedes driver.

If ever there was a true contest, then this is very much it and Wolff knows it: “Two races to go, and two Championships still to be decided. We are all excited to still be in the fight at this stage in the season, it’s a privilege and a testament to our resilience when we see where we stood in the early summer.

“Both titles are wide open, our mission is clear,” declared Wolff.

That mission is that for the last two rounds, of this gruelling 22-round season, Mercedes have to provide Lewis Hamilton all the ammo they can muster for a final attack on the eight points lead Red Bull’s Max Verstappen has, to turn it around by the time the lights go out in Abu Dhabi two weeks from now.

What his team can bring to the battle will determine whether Lewis becomes an eight times F1 World Champion or remains with seven titles.

The car has been performing well and is probably in the best place it has been all season

Also on the line, and of course intrinsically part of the mission is an eighth consecutive F1 constructors’ championship; where currently they lead Red Bull by five points.

Since Brazil, Hamilton and Mercedes have been unbeatable, even when relegated to the back of the grid for the Sao Paulo Sprint Race and the next day starting the race from midpack, the #44 went on to crush everyone including Verstappen.

Then, to dominate a week later, at Losail, must have Red Bull very worried no matter what they say about having reduced the power deficit to the Black cars. The reality was that the Hamilton-W12-combo in Brazil and then Qatar looked mightier than ever.

Wolff acknowledged: “Last time out we saw a faultless drive by Lewis in Qatar, commanding the race from start to finish, and a strong recovery for Valtteri before the unfortunate puncture took him out of contention.

“The car has been performing well recently and is probably in the best place it has been all season, with the drivers confident to push it to the limit. That’s encouraging for the final races and gives us strong momentum to take forward.”

Jeddah is a fast street circuit lined by barriers meaning it’ll be high risk and reward

The Saudi Arabian Grand Prix is a journey into the unknown for teams and drivers this weekend, the track being completed in the countdown to the race.

Wolff expects the new track to suit the Mercedes: “Jeddah is another completely new challenge, an all-new track to get to grips with and a lot of work has gone on behind the scenes to ensure we hit the ground running on Friday because getting as much information as we can during those initial sessions will be vital.

“It’s a fast street circuit with long flat-out sections and several high-speed corners, lined by barriers meaning it’ll be high risk and reward. We’re more motivated than ever and we expect to be in the hunt, so we are all looking forward to the debut grand prix in Saudi Arabia.”

In closing, Wolff – who in 2009 bought a share in Williams – paid tribute to the late legendary team patron: “Just a few days ago we lost Sir Frank Williams. He will be in all our thoughts this weekend and we’ll try our best to deliver a performance that’s worthy of his racing spirit.”

Exor chief John Elkann ‘has faith’ in Juve transfer probe | The Guardian Nigeria News

0

John Elkann, the head of Exor which controls Juventus, said on Tuesday he had faith in the investigators probing suspicious player transfers and potential false accounting at the Serie A club.

“Juventus are helping the prosecutors and are confident they will help shed light on the situation,” Italian media report Elkann as saying.

“As for us at Exor, I have faith in the judiciary. Juve have a new board, a new chief executive (Maurizio Arrivabene), a new sporting director (Federico Cherubini) and a new coach.

“They, together with the chairman (Andrea Agnelli) and vice-chairman (Pavel Nedved), are facing a difficult time as can happen and I’m sure that Juve’s future will be as great as its past.”

Elkann, a scion of the powerful Agnelli family which has owned Juventus almost continuously for nearly 100 years, was speaking at Exor’s ‘Investor Day’.

Prosectors in Turin are investigating Juve and six current and former directors — including Agnelli and Nedved — for allegedly making false communications to investors and issuing invoices for non-existent transactions.

The probe regards some 282 million euros ($319.2 million) of capital gains declared in accounts from the past three seasons on a host of transfers.

Italian media also report that prosecutors are investigating the possibility that some payments made to former Juve forward Cristiano Ronaldo were not included in the club’s most recent financial results, which were announced in September and recorded a loss of almost 210 million euros in the year up to June 2021.

Last month the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) launched its own investigation into a series of suspicious transfers, with the majority of the deals under the microscope involving Juve.

On Saturday news agency ANSA reported a source from Italian football’s supervisory commission COVISOC as saying that since autumn last year it has identified dozens of deals that do not just concern Juve — who are listed on the Italian stock exchange.

Tiger Woods says he’s ‘lucky to be alive,’ still have leg after crash

0

Tiger Woods was optimistic about playing some limited professional golf in the future while also being realistic about the struggles ahead, given the perspective he gleaned from the serious auto accident he endured in February.

“I’m lucky to be alive and also have a limb,” Woods said Tuesday in the Bahamas, where he conducted his first news conference since the Feb. 23 crash in Southern California.

Woods was at Albany Golf Club, site of this week’s Hero World Challenge, an event he hosts for his foundation.

He did not answer any specific questions about the accident, which happened as he traversed a winding road on his way to Rolling Hills Country Club early in the morning for an endorsement obligation. He referenced the 22-page police report that was issued in early April.

Woods was in the hospital for three weeks after the accident and in a hospital-like bed for three months after that. He suffered significant injuries to his right leg and foot and said it was “50-50” as to whether part of his leg might be amputated.

“This one’s been much more difficult,” Woods said, referencing the various injury comebacks in his career. “The knee stuff was one thing. That’s one level. Then the back. With this right leg. … it’s hard to explain how difficult it is. Being immobile for three months. Just to lay there. I was just looking forward to getting outside. That was a goal of mine. Especially for a person who lived his entire life outside, that was a goal.

“I transitioned from a wheelchair to crutches and now nothing. It’s been a lot of hard work.”

But he also admitted that “there’s a long way to go.”

“As far as playing at the tour level, I don’t know when that’s going to happen,” he said. “Now, I’ll play a round here or there, a little hit and giggle, I can do something like that. The USGA suggested Play It Forward [the tees]. I really like that idea now. I don’t like the tees on the back. I like Play It Forward. Come on, let’s move it up, let’s move it up.

“To see some of my shots fall out of the sky a lot shorter than they used to is a little eye-opening, but at least I’m able to do it again. That’s something that for a while there it didn’t look like I was going to.”

Woods was vague about when he was able to begin walking again and how much golf he has played but acknowledged that he has played “some holes” and posted a video on Nov. 21 in which he hit a shot from a driving range with the caption “Making Progress.”

He also noted that his comeback from spinal fusion surgery in 2017 to win the 2018 Tour Championship, the 2019 Masters and his 82nd victory at the 2019 Zozo Championship makes it easier to accept his fate now.

“I got that last major, and I ticked off two more events along the way,” he said. “I don’t foresee this leg ever being what it used to be, hence I’ll never have the back what it used to be, and clock’s ticking. I’m getting older, I’m not getting any younger. All that combined means a full schedule and a full practice schedule and the recovery that would take to do that … no, I don’t have any desire to do that.

“But to ramp it up for a few events a year and, as I alluded to Mr. [Ben] Hogan did, and he did a pretty good job of it, and there’s no reason that I can’t do that and feel ready. I may not be tournament-sharp in a sense that I haven’t played tournaments, but I think if you practice correctly and you do it correctly, that I’ve come off surgeries before. So I know the recipe for it, I’ve just got to get to a point where I feel comfortable enough where I can do that again.”

Hogan, who won 64 PGA Tour events and nine major championships, was involved in his own serious auto accident in 1949, when he and his wife, Valerie, were driving to Texas from a tournament in Phoenix. They were hit by a Greyhound bus, and he suffered significant injuries, including to his legs.

After the accident, Hogan never played more than nine tournaments in a year, the most coming in 1950. In 1951, he played just four times, winning twice — the Masters and U.S. Open. In 1953, he played just six times, winning five, including all three major championships he played.

But Hogan was younger than Woods, who turns 46 on Dec. 30.

“I have a long way in the rehab process of this leg, and it’s not the fun stuff of the rehab,” Woods said. “It’s just reps and breaking up scar tissue and things that really hurt. So that part of it’s not going to be fun, but the challenge of it is. I enjoy the challenge of getting in there and trying to push it to the next level; sometimes it’s two steps forward, one step back, but you’ve got to go through it. I enjoy that part of it, and maybe one day it will be good enough where I can get out here and I can compete against these best players in the world again.”

According to the police report issued by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office, Woods was “driving at a speed unsafe for the road conditions” and was unable to negotiate the curve of the roadway. According to the report, he was traveling at more than 82 mph in a 45 mph zone, and it was unclear whether Woods attempted to negotiate the curve.

Instead of staying in his lane as the road curved to the right, Woods went straight into a median, struck a curb, knocked down a wooden sign, and drove into the opposite lanes before hitting a tree and rolling over in the vehicle.

As he sat in the interview room at Albany, Woods acknowledged that he was experiencing pain in his back and his leg. That is part of what he needs to overcome, he said.

Although noncommittal to any schedule or a return, Woods was asked specifically about The Open at St. Andrews in July, a place where he has won twice.

“I would love to be able to play that Open Championship, there’s no doubt about it,” he said. “Physically, I hope I can. I’ve got to get there first. Tournament’s not going to go anywhere, but I need to get there.”

When asked about his looming 46th birthday, Woods joked that it would mean that in four more years “I’m in a cart,” referencing the PGA Tour Champions eligibility that will come with turning 50.

“This year’s been a year I would like to turn the page on,” he said.

Aruna sets record, now 13th in latest ITTF ranking — Sport — The Guardian Nigeria News – Nigeria and World News

0

In less than four days after setting an African record as the first player to reach the quarter-final stage at the ITTF World Table Tennis Championships, Quadri Aruna has set another African record following the release of the latest ITTF ranking yesterday.

The Nigerian was ranked 17 in the world before the ITTF World Table Tennis Championships held in Houston, Texas, United States. And based on the feat in Houston, Aruna has gained four steps in the ranking and is now rated 13th in the world, the first African to be so ranked.

Being the biggest movers among the top 20 players in the world, Aruna has continued to raise the bar for other African players to emulate with his superlative performance at major competitions, which has also earned him a place among the top 20 players invited for the 2021 World Table Tennis (WTTF) Cup Finals scheduled for December 4 to 7 in Singapore.

An elated Aruna after the ranking was released said the latest ranking meant more work for him.

“I am so excited to improve my world ranking and this means I must work hard to remain on top in the world. This is another task I must face in my career and I will not relent to do my best as I look forward to the WTTF Cup Finals taking place this weekend in Singapore.”

According to the President of the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF), Ishaku Tikon, the latest feat by Aruna would motivate other upcoming players to work harder.

“We are so excited that within one week, Aruna has set two African records as the first to reach the quarterfinal of the World Championships as well as the first African to be ranked 13th in the world.

“This for us as a federation means we must find another Aruna who can exceed what he has done. Our focus remains on the cadet and junior and we are going to ensure we organise tournaments and expose them to international competitions.

“I must also commend Aruna for his conduct within and outside the table because he has shown to be a good ambassador of the sport and we hope to complement this feat by ensuring we unearth more Arunas,” Tikon said.

Jonas Valanciunas goes 7-for-7 from 3 in first half, scores career-high 39 as Pelicans beat Clippers again

0

Jonas Valanciunas wasn’t exactly a marksman when he entered the NBA in 2012. In fact, in his first five seasons in the league, he went 1-of-4 from 3-point range.

But those days are long gone.

Valanciunas hit his first seven 3-pointers on Monday night — all in the first half — as he helped lead the New Orleans Pelicans to a 123-104 win over the LA Clippers.

The 6-foot-11, 265-pound bruiser has slowly started to add the three-point shot to his game since 2017, but he’s never had a night like Tuesday when he scored a career-high 39 points to go along with 15 rebounds.

“Guys were calling him Dirk Valanciunas,” Pelicans coach Willie Green said, referencing Dallas Mavericks great Dirk Nowitzki. “But we want him shooting the ball when he’s open and mixing it in. He still wants to go to the post, which I love about him. He’s a physical guy. But just explaining to him how it’s going to open our offense up with his ability to shoot the ball the way he can, it was amazing to see tonight.”

Valanciunas joined Stephen Curry as the only players this season to record at least 35 points, 10 rebounds and 7 3-pointers in a game — and both did it against the Clippers. Valanciunas also became the first player in NBA history to have seven 3-pointers and seven offensive rebounds in the same game.

He is just the sixth player since play-by-play tracking began in 1996 to go at least 7-of-7 from 3-point range in a half, joining Trevor Ariza (2014), Curry (2013), Ben Gordon (2012), Shawne Williams (2011) and Raef LaFrentz, according to ESPN Stats & Information research.

In his first 18 games, Valanciunas was shooting 56.4% from deep. But he went 1-for-11 in his three games prior to Tuesday and it appeared that his percentages were coming back down to Earth.

But when the first two shots went in, Valanciunas kept letting them fly. He went on a personal 14-4 run in the second quarter, including a stretch during which he made back-to-back-to-back 3-pointers that sent the Pelicans bench into a frenzy.

By the time the night was finished, Valanciunas had improved to 30-for-58 on 3-pointers this season — a league-leading 51.7%. He’s two away from tying his career high for 3 in a season, which he set two seasons ago in Memphis.

But he knows he has a long way to go before he can live up to his new nickname.

“Well, I’m still Jonas Valanciunas,” the 10-year veteran said with a chuckle. “Everybody wants to be [Dirk]. He’s one of the greatest big guys in the game. But I still gotta work a lot to be like him.

“I’m just taking what’s out there. If I have an open shot, I’ll take it. If I’m making it, I’ll keep taking it. It’s as simple as that.”

Valanciunas’ career-high 7 3s comes just 10 days after he set his previous career high when he went 5-of-9 on Nov. 19 against the same Clippers team, although that game was played in New Orleans.

“We just couldn’t stop him,” Clippers coach Ty Lue said Monday night. “We were due for a bad defensive game, but Valanciunas made 7 3s.”

ESPN’s Baxter Holmes contributed to this report.

Tiger Woods says part-time return to golf ‘realistic’ after recovering from car crash – National

0

Tiger Woods says he expects to play golf again, just not very often, and he doesn’t see himself reaching the top of the sport again because “I don’t think that’s a realistic expectation of me.”

He says he can see himself picking certain tournaments to play, but not a full-time schedule.

His extensive video interview with Golf Digest, with whom he has a financial relationship, was published Monday ahead of his first press conference since his right leg was badly damaged in a Feb. 23 car crash in the Los Angeles suburbs.

Woods is the tournament host of the Hero World Challenge.

The 15-time major champion raised hopes of another comeback when Woods posted a three-second video hitting a short iron with the message, “Making progress.”

He didn’t make it sound as though a return was around the corner.

“I have so far to go,” he said. “I’m not even at the halfway point. I have so much more muscle development and nerve development that I have to do in my leg. At the same time, as you know, I’ve had five back operations. So I’m having to deal with that. So as the leg gets stronger, sometimes the back may act up.”

Woods was recovering from another back procedure at the start of the year when he ran his SUV over a median and it toppled down a steep hill on a winding, sweeping road in the Los Angeles suburbs on his way to a television shoot at a golf course.

Tiger Woods hospitalized with multiple injuries after single-vehicle rollover – Feb 23, 2021

Doctors said he shattered tibia and fibula bones in his right leg in multiple locations. Those were stabilized by a rod in the tibia. A combination of screws and pins were used to stabilize additional injuries in the ankle and foot.

He last played at the PNC Championship with his son, Charlie, and then had a fifth back procedure that kept him out the early part of the year before the accident.

Woods already had one remarkable comeback, winning the Masters in 2019 after fusion surgery, his fourth on his lower back. He won the Zozo Championship in Japan later in the year for his 82nd career victory on the PGA Tour, tying Sam Snead for the all-time record.

“I don’t have to compete and play against the best players in the world to have a great life. After my back fusion, I had to climb Mt. Everest one more time. I had to do it, and I did. This time around, I don’t think I’ll have the body to climb Mt. Everest, and that’s OK. I can still participate in the game of golf. I can still, if my leg gets OK, I can still click off a tournament here or there.

“But as far as climbing the mountain again and getting all the way to the top, I don’t think that’s a realistic expectation of me.”

Woods is to be inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in March. The Masters is the first full week of April. Woods didn’t have a timetable, only that he wished the recovery was going faster than it was.

He said he could envision a career like Ben Hogan after his near-fatal car accident. Hogan played a limited schedule, though he still dominated the majors, including winning all three that he played in 1953.

“I think something that is realistic is playing the tour one day — never full-time ever again — but pick and choose, just like Mr. Hogan did. Pick and choose a few events a year and you play around that,” he said.

“I think that’s how I’m going to have to play it from now on,” he said. “It’s an unfortunate reality, but it’s my reality. And I understand it, and I accept it.”
