New Orleans Pelicans guard Didi Louzada suspended 25 games for violating NBA/NBPA’s anti-drug program

0

The NBA has suspended New Orleans Pelicans guard Didi Louzada 25 games without pay for violating the NBA/NBPA’s anti-drug program.

Louzada tested positive for drostanolone and testosterone.

In a statement to ESPN, Louzada, 22, described the source of unknowingly ingesting the banned substances as an offseason trip back to his Brazilian home and consultation with a nutritionist recommended to him.

“When I was in Brazil during the offseason, I consulted a nutritionist who recommended I take some vitamins and supplements,” Louzada said in the statement. “Because she has a history of working with professional athletes, I would never have imagined that any of those substances would be banned or could be contaminated. Once I learned of the positive test, I immediately cooperated completely with the league and union to help all of us understand what exactly occurred.

“I would never knowingly take anything that violates NBA rules. I accept my responsibility in this situation. I deeply regret that this happened and I apologize to my team, my teammates, and Pelicans fans for this mistake.”

The Pelicans drafted Louzada with the 35th pick in 2019, the same draft in which they selected Zion Williamson. Louzada was a part of the deal that sent the No. 4 pick to Atlanta in which New Orleans also acquired Jaxson Hayes and Nickeil Alexander-Walker.

“On behalf of the New Orleans Pelicans organization, we were disappointed to learn that Didi Louzada violated the NBA/NBPA Anti-Drug Program,” David Griffin, Pelicans executive vice president of basketball operations, said in a statement. “After speaking with Didi, we are confident that he understands the full gravity of the situation and regrets the decisions that led to the suspension. We fully support Didi on and off the court as he learns and grows from this experience.”

Louzada spent two seasons with the Sydney Kings in the NBL before the Pelicans signed him in April of last season for the final few games of the 2020-21 campaign. This offseason, Louzada re-upped with New Orleans on a multiyear contract.

Louzada has played in five games in his NBA career and has also spent time this season with the Pelicans’ G League affiliate in Birmingham.

Missing Chinese tennis star Peng Shuai reappears in public at Beijing event – National

0

Missing tennis star Peng Shuai reappeared in public Sunday at a youth tournament in Beijing, according to photos released by the organizer, as the ruling Communist Party tried to quell fears abroad while suppressing information in China about Peng after she accused a senior leader of sexual assault.

The post by the China Open on the Weibo social media service made no mention of Peng’s disappearance or her accusation. The three-time Olympian and former Wimbledon champion was shown standing beside a court, waving and signing oversize commemorative tennis balls for children.

Member of China state media shares photos of missing tennis star Peng Shuai

The ruling party appears to be trying to defuse alarm about Peng without acknowledging her disappearance after she on Nov. 2 accused Zhang Gaoli, a member of the party’s ruling Standing Committee until 2018, of forcing her to have sex.

Peng’s disappearance and official silence in response to appeals for information prompted calls for a boycott of the Winter Olympics in Beijing in February, a prestige event for the Communist Party. The women’s professional tour threatened to pull events out of China unless the safety of the former No. 1 doubles player was assured.

Discussion of Peng’s accusation has been deleted from websites in China. A government spokesman on Friday denied knowing about the outcry. The ruling party’s internet filters also block most people in China from seeing other social media abroad and most global news outlets.

Comments on Chinese social media on Sunday criticized the Women’s Tennis Association and others who spoke up about Peng. Comments in Chinese on Twitter poked fun at the awkward release of photos and video of Peng by employees of state media this weekend while the government stayed silent.

“When will the WTA get out of China?” said a comment on the Sina Weibo social media service, signed “Sleep Time.”

Peng adds to a growing number of Chinese businesspeople, activists and ordinary people who have disappeared in recent years after criticizing party figures or in crackdowns on corruption or pro-democracy and labor rights campaigns.

Some reemerge weeks or months later without explanation, suggesting they are warned not to disclose they were detained or the reason.

Peng’s appearance Sunday was mentioned in the final sentence of a report about the tournament on the website of the English-language Global Times, a newspaper published by the ruling party and aimed at foreign readers, but not immediately reported by other media within China.

The Global Times editor, Hu Xijin, said Saturday on Twitter, which can’t be seen by most internet users in China, that Peng “stayed in her own home freely” and would “show up in public” soon.

The Global Times is known for its nationalistic tone. Hu uses his Twitter account to criticize foreign governments and point out social and economic problems abroad.

A comment on Twitter signed bobzhang999 said, “Hu Dog, with so many photos, why don’t you let Peng Shuai talk?”

Another, signed Magician, said, “Let Peng Shuai’s parents hold a news conference.”

Tennis stars and the WTA have been unusually vocal in demanding information about Peng. Other companies and sports groups are reluctant to confront Beijing for fear of losing access to the Chinese market or other retaliation.

The ruling party has given no indication whether it is investigating Peng’s accusation against Gao, 75, who left the Standing Committee in 2018 and has largely disappeared from public life.

Even if Peng’s accusation is deemed valid, people in China often are jailed or face other penalties for embarrassing the party by publicizing complaints about abuses instead of going through the secretive, often unresponsive official system.

The status of star athletes such as Peng is especially sensitive. State media celebrate their victories as proof the party is making China strong. But the party is vigilant about making sure they cannot use their prominence and public appeal to erode its image.

Steve Simon, the WTA’s chairman and CEO, expressed concern for Peng’s safety after Hu, the newspaper editor, posted two videos Saturday that appeared to show her in a restaurant.

“While it is positive to see her, it remains unclear if she is free and able to make decisions and take actions on her own, without coercion or external interference. This video alone is insufficient,” Simon said. ”Our relationship with China is at a crossroads.”

The International Olympic Committee has remained quiet about the status of Peng, who competed in three Olympics, helping to contribute to the IOC’s multimillion-dollar revenue from broadcasting and sponsorships.

The Olympic body’s stated policy is “quiet diplomacy.” The IOC said Saturday it would “continue our open dialogue on all levels with the Olympic movement in China.”

Asked two weeks ago about human rights in China, senior IOC member Juan Antonio Samaranch said “we are not discussing with the Chinese government anything” about that subject.

The IOC has previously said its partner in organizing the Winter Games is the local organizing committee, not the Chinese state. That committee is controlled by the Communist Party.

Emma Terho, the newly elected head of the IOC’s Athletes’ Commission that is charged with representing the interests of Olympic athletes, said in a statement Saturday “we support the quiet diplomacy” approach favored by the IOC.

Last week, the foreign arm of state TV issued a statement in English attributed to Peng that retracted her accusation against Zhang. The WTA’s Simon questioned its legitimacy while others said it only increased their concern about her safety.

Rohr has outlived his worth as Eagles’ coach — Owolabi | The Guardian Nigeria News

0

Says Decision On Domestic Players Questiones His Abilities

Former international, Felix Owolabi, has expressed resentment over the feat of Super Eagles, especially against Cape Verde and in the other fixtures of the African World Cup qualifying matches en route to Qatar 2022. He described Coach Gernot Rohr five-year reign as a period that domestic league players became stagnated.

Nigeria last Tuesday qualified for the World Cup play off under the French-German coach after the succeeded in booking a place for the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroun. Meanwhile, some dissatisfied fans at game against Cape Verde in the Teslim Balogun Stadium chorused the sack of Rohr, who they concluded can never take Eagles to the next Mundial.

Speaking to The Guardian during the week, Owolabi said he does not see Rohr as a coach, because he cannot point at any pattern of football that the Eagles have adopted since he was made the team’s handler, aside the team lacking character, discipline and others.

“As far as I am concerned, the man has simply wasted more than five years of our football development. The fund we wasted in engaging him would have been used to refurbish the Liberty and National stadiums.

“Under him, the Eagles lack character, discipline and formation of any kind. Yes, I agree that we have individual players, but collectively, we do not have a team. To me, the man is not a coach because five years is more than enough to produce a world-class team,” he said, adding that his greatest undoing was abandoning the domestic league.

“If Rohr is confident of himself as a good coach, he would have looked at our local league for talents, whom he thinks he can groom for a period that he has spent with us. By now, at least he would have produced 10 players. But he jettisoned our domestic league players and looked for them in Europe, whereas the destiny of every country’s football lies in its local league.

“Rohr’s greatest mistake was when he made a pronouncement that he has nothing to do with the local league because the league was nothing to write home about. And that was where he shot himself in the foot,” he said.

Owolabi who has a doctorate degree in Physical Education added: “The excuse given by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) that it does not have the money to give him if sacked is a flimsy one. To me, the NFF is not ready to sack Rohr and it simply playing on Nigerians’ intelligence. I think we have the power to sack a coach at any time and engage another one any time, any day.

“Look at the case of the Egyptian coach that was sacked and another one employed almost immediately during the World Cup qualifiers. Another case is that of Chelsea’s Frank Lampard, who was relieved of his duty and replaced by Thomas Tuchel who went to win the Champions League with the same players that struggled under Lampard. Rohr has nothing to offer us, he should just go for another person to take over,” he stated.

As far as I am concerned the man has simply wasted more than five years of our football development and also our resources, which ordinarily would have been used to refurbish the Liberty and the National stadiums.

Hamilton: Still not clear what the limits of the track are

Lewis Hamilton said Formula 1’s regulations were unclear after Red Bull’s Formula 1 World Championship leader Max Verstappen went unpunished for defensively forcing the Mercedes driver off the track during the Sao Paulo Grand Prix last weekend.

The seven-times F1 world champion said a lengthy drivers’ meeting with race director Michael Masi at the Qatar Grand Prix provided no clarification on overtaking and what would be seen as ‘hard and fair racing’ and what would be penalised.

“No. It’s not clear. Every driver I think, except for Max, was asking about it just for clarity. But it wasn’t very clear,” Hamilton told reporters.

“It’s still not clear what the limits of the track are. It’s clearly not the white line anymore, when overtaking. So we just go for it. We just ask for consistency. So if it’s the same as the last race then that should be the same for all of us in those scenarios.”

Hamilton, who had to run completely off track at Interlagos as Verstappen defended against an overtaking move by braking late and also going wide, said there was no assurance on consistency.

“It’s not clear. It could be different with different stewards, is what they said,” he added.

Verstappen, who leads Hamilton by 14 points, said the situation was ultimately “pretty clear” and felt there was no need to discuss details in the media.

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff told Sky Sports television that the stewards taking no action against Verstappen’s aggressive defence in Sao Paulo could have repercussions.

Mercedes had tried to force a review of the stewards’ decision not to penalise Verstappen but were denied on grounds that new video evidence was not significant.

“In my opinion, what it says is you can just launch yourself into a corner and drag the other car out of line. And that obviously can lead to quite some dirtier driving going forward,” said Wolff.

“We don´t want to have a messy situation tomorrow, in Saudi Arabia and Abu Dhabi, because that would be really bad.” (Reporting by Alan Baldwin)

Talor Gooch leads RSM Classic entering final round, seeks first PGA Tour win

0

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. — Talor Gooch is playing some of his best golf in the toughest weather, even when he hasn’t been in the best position off the tee. Now the former Oklahoma State player is one round away from his first PGA Tour victory at the RSM Classic.

Gooch hit only six fairways Saturday at Sea Island and still managed a 3-under 67, stretching his lead to three shots going into the final round.

“Any day like that is going to be a grind on the tour,” Gooch said. “To be frank, what you’re trying to do out there is avoid bogeys. It would have been easy today at times to just really get conservative and really be defensive. I was pleased I was able to stay aggressive at times.”

He was at 16-under 196, three shots clear of Seamus Power of Ireland (67) and Sebastian Munoz of Colombia (69).

Tom Hoge, also in search of his first win, had a 67 and was alone in fourth, while Luke List (66), former RSM Classic winner Mackenzie Hughes of Canada (70) and Scott Stallings (69) were another shot behind.

Gooch, who pulled away with a short birdie putt at the par-5 15th hole and a 12-footer for birdie at the par-3 17th, has four top-11 finishes in his six tournaments and is on the cusp of breaking into the top 50 in the world.

“I want to be the best and I want to compete against the best and I want to be the best Oklahoma State golfer on tour,” Gooch said. “Everyone talks about Matthew Wolff and Viktor Hovland … rightfully so. They’re incredible players. But that’s always a nice little something to kind of get you to work a little bit harder, be a little bit more diligent and try to prove them wrong.”

Ruud shocks Rublev, sets up Medvedev showdown today — Sport — The Guardian Nigeria News – Nigeria and World News

WTA Threatens To Cancel Chinese Tourneys Over Missing Star

In a winner-takes-all green group match, Casper Ruud delivered an absolute shocker at the Nitto ATP Finals, edging Andrey Rublev 2-6, 7-5, 7-6(5) in a high-quality, tense match to qualify for today’s semi-finals.

The 22-year-old bounced back from losing his opening round-robin match against Novak Djokovic by defeating Cameron Norrie to set up a crunch clash against Rublev, with the Russian also holding a 1-1 record after two matches.

With the pressure on, Ruud imposed his game on Rublev, hitting his powerful groundstrokes with precision and depth as he rallied from a break down in the second and third sets to secure victory in two hours and 24 minutes. He finished second in the green group behind Djokovic and will face Daniil Medvedev in the last four today, while Djokovic will play Alexander Zverev in a highly anticipated match that the world No 1 has promised to give his all.

In a related development, the women’s tennis’ governing body has threatened to take drastic action against China over the case of Peng Shuai who has been missing for some weeks.

In a stern ultimatum, the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) threatened to pull tournaments from China unless satisfactory evidence of her safety is issued soon.

The body said it has been unable to contact her for two weeks since she accused a politician with the ruling Communist party of sexual assault. Top players, including Novak Djokovic, have expressed fears for her safety because she has been unreachable since making allegations against China’s former vice-premier, Zhang Gaoli.

It was reported that Peng sent the WTA an email allaying any concerns about her wellbeing but was met with widespread scepticism with fellow players saying Peng did not write it. WTA boss, Steve Simon released a statement, saying he did not believe Peng sent that mail herself. He went on to issue an ultimatum to China, threatening to cancel tournaments scheduled to take place in the country if “verifiable proof” of Peng’s safety is not provided.

Dallas Mavericks to retire Dirk Nowitzki’s No. 41 on Jan. 5

0

DALLAS — The Mavericks are retiring Dirk Nowitzki’s No. 41 when Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors visit in January.

NBA commissioner Adam Silver is expected to attend the Jan. 5 ceremony honoring the only player in league history to play 21 seasons with the same team. The ceremony will be held after the game.

The 43-year-old Nowitzki is the franchise leader in points, games, starts, minutes, rebounds, 3-pointers, free throws and blocks. The 14-time All-Star is the highest-scoring foreign-born player in NBA history. Nowitzki is sixth on the all-time list with 31,560 points.

Nowitzki retired at age 40 in 2019, eight years after leading Dallas to the only championship in franchise history. Jason Kidd, the point guard on that team, is now coach of the Mavericks.

Three other Dallas players have had their numbers retired, all of them guards in Brad Davis (10), Rolando Blackman (22) and Derek Harper (12).

Terence Crawford and Shawn Porter are expected to serve up a potential fight of the year contender in Las Vegas when they meet in the middle of the ring on Saturday night. ‘Bud’ is looking to make it six successive knockouts since he moved up to welterweight back in 2018 after becoming the undisputed king at super-lightweight.

Crawford’s hit-list includes Jeff Horn, Jose Benavidez Jr, Amir Khan, Egidijus Kavaliauskas and Kell Brook with his record currently standing at 37-0.

‘Showtime’ always bring the action and has never been in a dull encounter, meaning we are set for fireworks in Sin City.

Porter has never ducked a challenge, with his record now reading 31-3-1 after losing his WBC strap to Spence in September 2019.

And if there was ever a time for Crawford to cement his legacy as an all-time great, beating Porter would be the perfect way to go about his business to once again set up the chance to meet with Spence.
