Marko: No Brawn GP style F1 fairytale in 2022

Red Bull consultant Helmut Marko does not believe a Brawn GP style fairytale will emerge from the 2022 Formula 1 season, despite the new rules expected to level the playing field.

The story of Brawn GP and the 2009 season is well told. In a nutshell: at the end of 2008, Honda Racing pulled out of F1, citing the global recession of the time as the reason, handing the team over to Ross Brawn for one-pound.

Underfunded but with experienced campaigners Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello in the driving seats of the neat BGP-001; Mercedes V8-engines bolted to chassis’ built for Honda power, Brawn took advantage of the double-diffuser loop-hole which rival teams ignored initially.

By the time they woke up Button was on his way to that year’s F1 drivers’ title, which he claimed at the penultimate race, on the same day Brawn GP won the 2009 F1 constructors’ title in their first season of trying, a true giant-killing exercise.

Fast forward a dozen years or so, with a new rules package coming into force, Marko predicted to Auto Revue magazine that there will be “no repeat of the fairytale” and added: “With the level that teams like Mercedes and Red Bull are at today – with simulation, computers and all the resources – I don’t believe it will happen.”

Marko: In theory, if Mercedes and Red Bull drove flat-out we would lap the whole field every time

The Austrian is adamant that Red Bull and Mercedes will again be the benchmark outfits, with little to separate them and another bitter fight on the cards, while the others – Formula B – he hopes, will be closer with Ferrari maybe winning “one or the other race” because of improvements to their power unit witnessed last year.

“The last step they took with the engine was clear,” acknowledged Marko of the upsurge in form shown by the Reds, finishing third in the 2021 F1 constructors’ championship.

Meanwhile, amid bullish talk out of Maranello and other teams dripping feel-good social media ‘progress reports’ it is clear Marko is not buying any preseason hype.

“I only see the progress we are making, and that is significant,” he said of the Red Bull RB18.

As a true racer, winning Le Mans during the sport’s most perilous era and competing in F1 at the same time, Marko “hopes for a closer contest in F1 this season” with help from the new rules package.

“In theory, last year, if we drove flat-out we would lap the whole field every time,” he pointed out with regards to Mercedes and Red Bull dominance last year.

A footnote to the Brawn GP story, which began as the leam started by lumberjack Ken Tyrrell, morphed into the Jacques Villeneuve and Craig Pollock led British American Racing (BAR) in 1999. When that project bombed Honda Racing stepped in to buy the team for the 2006 season.

The global crash of 2008 spared few, Honda deciding to pull the plug on their hefty F1 commitment, leaving the building as quickly as possible by handing the keys to Brawn.

After the abovementioned Brawn GP adventure, Mercedes stepped into the picture as they wanted to revive the Silver Arrows in F1 with engine supply to customer teams in a double-pronged effort in the top flight, to become the mightiest team ever in the top flight.

On 16 November 2009, Mercedes GP was born for the 2010 season and the rest, as they say, is history.

From minnows with no budget, they became the serial-winning behemoth that the team is today, but no such fairytale is on the cards this time around if Dr Marko is correct. Time will tell…

Benzema cash seized by France in sex tape case | The Guardian Nigeria News

French bailiffs have seized 230,000 euros ($260,000) from Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema over his conviction last year for complicity in a bid to blackmail former France team-mate, Mathieu Valbuena, with a sex tape, a source familiar with the case said Thursday.

A court-ordered Benzema in November to pay a fine, damages and legal costs for pressuring Valbuena to pay off his blackmailers, as well as handing him a one-year suspended jail sentence.

Benzema “implicated himself personally, through subterfuge and lies, to convince his team-mate to submit to the blackmail”, the court in Paris suburb Versailles said at the time.

Benzema has appealed the ruling, which came in the same year he made a stunning return to France’s national squad after being dropped in 2015 over the blackmail allegations.

The 34-year-old has scored nine times for France since being recalled by manager Didier Deschamps for the Euro 2020 finals — delayed by a year due to the coronavirus pandemic — making him the fifth-highest scorer in the history of Les Bleus.

Benzema’s performances have helped rehabilitate him in the eyes of many French fans and coach Didier Deschamps, and the seizure of his cash comes less than two weeks after he won France Football magazine’s player of the year award.

Valbuena’s lawyers turned to the bailiffs to recover the cash from Benzema after he did not pay up voluntarily.

A source close to the case said the Real Madrid star’s account had been partially frozen since Friday.

Benzema’s own lawyers want the money held in escrow while his appeal is heard.

“This is the logical consequence of the decision for immediate payment. We asked for an amicable agreement on payment, which was never reached,” said Valbuena’s lawyer Paul-Albert Iweins.

Anthony Joshua next fight clear after Tyson Fury decision as Eddie Hearn fires warning | Boxing | Sport

0

“We needed to come up with a path and plan that everyone was comfortable with and ultimately, not everyone was comfortable with it.”

Hearn, who promotes both Joshua and Whyte, fired a warning to Fury after his clash with the Brixton Body Snatcher was confirmed.

“What Tyson Fury wants to do is have a little easy one in March,” the 42-year-old told IFL TV.

“Now he’s gonna have to fight Dillian Whyte and, by the way, after all this kerfuffle, he’ll get beat by Dillian Whyte.

“He’ll get knocked out by Dillian Whyte.”

While Fury is set to face Whyte in a bout the 33-year-old dubbed ‘the best in Britain’, Joshua will clash with Usyk.

Hearn anticipates it will be ‘straightforward’ given the fact the two have a contract as Joshua merely triggered his rematch clause.

Beijing increases limits on movement within city due to COVID-19 as Olympics approach – National

Beijing has limited the movement of people in more parts of the Chinese capital, even as it reported fewer COVID-19 cases on Thursday, in a bid to lower virus risk less than 10 days before its hosting of the Winter Olympics Games.

Beijing’s Fengtai district said late on Wednesday residents in more areas should not leave their residential compounds for unnecessary reasons and must have a daily COVID test.

The district, which has reported more local virus cases than other districts in the current outbreak in Beijing, had already locked down some residential compounds, impacting tens of thousands of people.

Beijing reported five locally transmitted infections with confirmed symptoms for Wednesday, down from 14 a day earlier, according to data from the National Health Commission (NHC) on Thursday.

Although the caseload is low compared to outbreaks globally, Beijing spares no effort in complying with a national guideline of extinguishing virus flare-ups as soon as possible.

Cornet upsets Halep in brutal heat to make Slam quarter on 63rd attempt | The Guardian Nigeria News

0

Unseeded French veteran Alize Cornet upset Simona Halep at the Australian Open in brutal heat Monday to make her first Grand Slam quarter-final on her 63rd attempt.

Both players struggled as the temperatures hit 33 Celsius (91 Fahrenheit) on Rod Laver Arena, but it was the 32-year-old who prevailed 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 in a gruelling 2hr 33min.

She will now play 27th-seeded Danielle Collins for a place in the semis after the American outlasted Elise Mertens 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in a near three-hour epic.

The breakthrough has been a long time coming for Cornet, who made her Grand Slam debut at the French Open in 2005 but had never been past the fourth round before.

Thailand’s Tamarine Tanasugarn previously held the record for most appearances before reaching a quarter-final at this level, achieving the feat on her 45th try at Wimbledon in 2008.

“It feels amazing. That battle I had with Simona today and the heat. After 30 minutes we were both dying and we kept going for two-and-a-half hours,” said Cornet, who upset world number three Garbine Muguruza in round two.

“Simona is such a fighter and an example for me. To be able to go to my first quarter-final is a dream come true.”

They traded breaks in the opening set, with Cornet striking first, before the 14th-seeded Romanian levelled.

With the ice-towels out to keep them cool, they pounded away from the baseline and it was Cornet who came out on top to break two-time Grand Slam winner Halep and move 5-3 clear.

She was unable to close out the set as Halep powered a backhand volley out of her reach to break back, but Cornet once more broke the Romanian to seal it in 48 minutes.

But it took it out of her. Cornet had an ice bag on her head and was drinking as much fluid as she could at the changeover, and her hand appeared to be shaking.

She returned to loop a forehand long and lose her opening serve in set two, but with both players clearly struggling she then fared better to reel off three games in a row.

Halep seemed the more distressed, constantly bending over to catch her breath, but somehow persevered to break again and take a gruelling set after Cornet told the umpire of the heat: “It’s insane, it’s inhuman”.

The Romanian worked a break point at 3-2 in the final set but failed to convert and tossed her racquet away in disgust.

Instead it was Cornet who struck to move a break up at 4-3 as Halep netted a backhand with the Frenchwoman dropping to her knees in exhaustion three games later after clinching victory.

Phoenix Suns to create confidential internal employee hotline amid Robert Sarver investigation

0

As the NBA nears the fourth month of its investigation into the Phoenix Suns and majority owner Robert Sarver, the team is working toward creating a confidential internal hotline in the coming weeks for employees to report complaints, team sources told ESPN.

On Monday, a Suns executive explained to colleagues that the reason for creating the internal hotline is because “no one actually uses the NBA hotline at all,” the sources told ESPN. (Other NBA teams also have internal hotlines.)

The Suns did not respond to a request for comment.

In 2018, in the wake of Sports Illustrated’s reported allegations of harassment and violence toward female employees inside the Dallas Mavericks organization, the NBA created a confidential hotline for team and league employees to voice concerns of improper conduct.

In ESPN’s November story, which outlined allegations of a sometimes toxic and hostile workplace during Sarver’s 17-year tenure in Phoenix, NBA spokesperson Mike Bass said the league had not “received a complaint of misconduct at the Suns organization through any of our processes, including our confidential workplace misconduct hotline or other correspondence.”

The NBA did not respond to a request for comment.

Suns employees were made aware of the NBA’s hotline in a February 2018 email from team president and CEO Jason Rowley. It was noted in the email that the callers have the option to remain anonymous, but a disclaimer was included: “Note that if you make an anonymous complaint, someone could still guess your identity from the circumstances or other information you provide.”

Fury given 48 hours to agree Usyk fight as he waits on Anthony Joshua | Boxing | Sport

Promoter Hearn denied that Joshua’s decision will be financially motivated, but argued there was a logic in him taking a backseat after recently trialling a number of new coaches as he seeks to replace long-time mentor Rob McCracken.

“There definitely no deal done,” Hearn said on the DAZN Boxing Show. “Long way to go in terms of detail.

“There is a smart play here somewhere, but AJ’s not about the money.

“If the plan makes sense – work with a new trainer, maybe have a fight first, go into a much bigger fight – yeah, I can see the sense in it.

Button: Hamilton will be racing, he wants that eighth F1 title

0

button hamilton bookies f1 betting

Lewis Hamilton has been backed to win a record-breaking eighth Formula 1 title by his old McLaren team-mate Jenson Button who won the 2009 Championship. Retired from F1 in 2017, Button believes Hamilton will keep going and surpass Michael Schumacher.

Schumacher and Hamilton are level with seven titles each, but Hamilton could go ahead of the German legend if he wins the 2022 F1 competition.

Bettors who fancy the Brit to do just that can get odds of around 5/4 with bet365 Australia.

And Button certainly believes in his compatriot, telling Good Morning Britain: “I really do hope he will be racing [next year], I think he will be racing.

“You know he wants to win that eighth title and be the most decorated Formula 1 driver in F1 history. He will do that, I really do think so.”

Button: Formula 1 is in an amazing place

Last year’s controversial ending to the final race saw Hamilton denied an eighth championship by Verstappen, leading to speculation that the 37-year-old could retire.

Button added: “It was a controversial end to the season, but I think you’ve got to look at the season as a whole. Formula 1 is in an amazing place, two fantastic drivers going at it every weekend, and I think everyone is excited about the new season.

“New regulations and it’s all about the development of these cars throughout the year.”

Hamilton remains under contract with Mercedes until the end of the 2023 season, but that has not stopped whispers saying he could walk away after the hotly-debated ending in Abu Dhabi.

Pre-season testing will begin for the new campaign in under a month’s time, with Mercedes set to launch their new car on February 18.

Horner: I’m sure Hamilton will decide what’s best for him

Christian Horner – British Team Principal of Red Bull Racing – also wants Hamilton to keep driving: “I certainly hope Lewis will be around this year. He’s still driving at an incredible level, the two drivers last year were in a league of their own.

“But ultimately, it’s his choice, it’s his career, it’s his decision, so I’m sure he will decide what’s best for him, what he wants to do, and that’s none of our business.”

On the controversial ending to that final-day race, Horner said: “Yes look, at the end of the day we’re a sport, we’re not saving lives. It’s hard and competitive, but there has to be a respect at the end of it.

“It’s been a long, hard, tough year, last season and that’s why I went to see Toto [Wolff] following the end of the race. Unfortunately, he wasn’t about, but I did manage to speak with Lewis and his father.”

It was Bernie Ecclestone – former chief executive of the Formula 1 Group – who fanned the flames of Hamilton retiring recently.

Ecclestone: I don’t think Lewis is coming back

“I think he will not race next year,” Ecclestone said at the end of December. “His disappointment in Abu Dhabi was too great, and I understand him.

“A couple of days ago I spoke with his father. I realised immediately that he did not want to talk about the future of his son, so we just talked about business,” added Ecclestone.

Hamilton has not posted on his social media accounts since the disappointment in the Middle East, despite usually being prolific on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.

The last post to his 6.9-million Twitter followers and 26.7m Instagram followers was on December 11 last year, with his 5.9-million Facebook followers getting an update earlier that week.

The new F1 season kicks off in Bahrain on March 20.
