Concern deepens for Chinese tennis star’s safety after email — Sport — The Guardian Nigeria News – Nigeria and World News

0

The boss of women’s tennis has cast doubt on an email posted on China’s media purportedly from tennis star Peng Shuai, saying it “only raises my concerns as to her safety.”

Steve Simon, chairman of the WTA, said in a statement that he had a “hard time believing” the email was written by Peng, who has not been heard from since alleging two weeks ago that a powerful Chinese politician had sexually assaulted her.

Peng, a former Wimbledon and French Open doubles champion alleged on the Twitter-like Weibo earlier this month that former vice-premier Zhang Gaoli had “forced” her into sex during a long-term on-off relationship.

The claims were quickly scrubbed from social media and she has not been seen since, drawing mounting concern over her wellbeing.

However, state-run CGTN published a screenshot on Twitter of what it said was an email written by Peng to Simon and other WTA officials.

In the email, Peng purportedly claims that her earlier accusations of sexual abuse are “not true” and says she is “resting at home and everything is fine.”

But doubts were quickly flagged about the language used in the purported email from Peng, which Twitter users noted had a cursor visible in the screenshot posted by CGTN.

Simon said he was struggling to believe it was authentic.

“The statement released today by Chinese state media concerning Peng Shuai only raises my concerns as to her safety and whereabouts,” Simon wrote in a statement.

“I have a hard time believing that Peng Shuai actually wrote the email we received or believes what is being attributed to her,” he added.

He said he had been repeatedly trying to reach her via numerous forms of communication, to no avail.

He called for “independent and verifiable proof that she is safe”.

‘Incredible courage’
“Peng Shuai displayed incredible courage in describing an allegation of sexual assault against a former top official in the Chinese government,” said Simon.

“Her allegation of sexual assault must be respected, investigated with full transparency and without censorship.

“The voices of women need to be heard and respected, not censored nor dictated to.”

China has kept silent over growing concern for the tennis star, whose claims marked the first time its fledgling #MeToo movement has struck at the top echelons of the ruling Communist Party.

But Beijing has previously faced allegations of using forced confessions on state media, with British regulators revoking CGTN’s licence for failing to comply with fairness and privacy rules.

William Nee of advocacy group Chinese Human Rights Defenders said Peng’s statement “should not be taken at face value”.

“The Chinese government has a long history of arbitrarily detaining people involved in controversial cases, controlling their ability to speak freely, and making them give forced statements,” he said in a statement.

Nee called for Beijing to prove that she has not been detained.

‘Power of the state’
Mareike Ohlberg of the German Marshall Fund wrote on Twitter that these types of messages are “not meant to convince people but to intimidate and demonstrate the power of the state.”

The message from Beijing is clearly: “‘We are telling you that she is fine, and who are you to say otherwise?’”, she wrote.

Details of Peng’s allegations remain scrubbed from China’s internet.

On November 2, Peng wrote on social media that Zhang — who is in his seventies — “forced” her into sex and said they had an on-off relationship lasting several years.

The post appeared to have been deleted quickly, however, sparking swift accusations from critics of Beijing of online censorship.

Four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka said Wednesday that she was in “shock” about the case, with Novak Djokovic and numerous other players in recent days saying they were deeply worried about her.

American player Jessica Pegula tweeted Thursday that she hoped the WTA “continues to show what we stand for as players.”

“I hope more people, not just tennis players, shed some light on this deeply concerning situation,” she wrote.

China’s national tennis association has not responded to AFP requests for comment.

Canelo could fight Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua as Hearn makes bold heavyweight claim | Boxing | Sport

“I think that when you look at Saul the Golovkin fight is a huge fight financially, a lot of people would want to see that fight. But does that motivate him? I think he could become undisputed at 175 and I like that plan. But there is also the cruiserweight division.

“Listen, he could move up and fight at heavyweight. I mean, Usyk’s not a massive heavyweight, Trevor Bryan’s a world champion as well. Can he compete against those guys?

“Cruiserweight first, maybe. But I like the fight against Makabu. I think it’s a dangerous fight, I think it’s an exciting fight and as I said, Saul and Eddie are interested in making history.

“They’re not interested in having normal, boring fights. Every fight has to mean something.”

If Canelo was to jump up to the heavyweight division, it could set up some mouth-watering clashes against Fury or Joshua.

Staples Center to become Crypto.com Arena in reported $700 million naming rights deal

0

LOS ANGELES — Staples Center is getting a new name. Starting Christmas Day, it will be Crypto.com Arena.

The downtown Los Angeles home of the NBA’s Lakers and Clippers, the NHL’s Kings and the WNBA’s Sparks will change its name after 22 years of operation, arena owner AEG announced Tuesday night.

Crypto.com is paying $700 million, according to multiple reports, over 20 years to rename the building. The parties aren’t publicly announcing the financial terms of what’s believed to be the richest naming rights deal in sports history.

The 20,000-seat arena has been Staples Center since it opened in October 1999, with the naming rights owned by the American office-supplies retail company under a 20-year agreement. The name will change when the Lakers host the Brooklyn Nets in the NBA’s annual Christmas showcase.

Crypto.com is a cryptocurrency platform and exchange headquartered in Singapore. Founded in 2016, Crypto.com has been on a spending spree across the global sports landscape over the past year. The platform has inked high-visibility sponsorship deals with Formula One, the UFC, Italy’s Serie A, Paris St-Germain and the NHL’s Montreal Canadiens, while also purchasing the Philadelphia 76ers‘ uniform sponsorship patch.

AEG, the sports and entertainment conglomerate that has majority ownership of the Kings and had a stake in the Lakers until last summer, built the arena that quickly became a famous setting for major events in the United States’ second-largest metropolitan area.

Along with its sports tenants, the arena has hosted 19 Grammy Awards ceremonies, three NBA All-Star Games, two NHL All-Star Games and countless high-profile concerts, performances and important public events, including memorials for Michael Jackson, Nipsey Hussle and Kobe Bryant.

The Lakers have won six NBA championships during their tenure in the cavernous arena, including three straight in its first three years of operation. Banners commemorating the Lakers’ 17 NBA titles hang high on the walls above the playing floor, providing what might be the most distinctive interior feature of the building.

“Yeah, it’s tough, you know what I mean? Lakers fans and really sports fans in general obviously know that building as the Staples Center,” Lakers coach Frank Vogel said Wednesday. “I understand the disappointment the fans will have. But that’s just the way of the world. This is the business we’re in. Almost universally around the country, there’s a business element to naming rights for the arenas. It’s really out of our control.”

Russell Westbrook, who joined his hometown Lakers this offseason, said Staples Center “has got so many great memories, just for me as a kid, growing up in L.A.”

“So many great things have happened in that building,” he said. “Regardless of the name, the building is still the building, and that’s what’s most important and that’s all you can think about.”

The Sparks have won three WNBA titles while at Staples Center, and the Kings won their first two Stanley Cup championships (2012 and 2014) there, clinching both on home ice.

The Clippers will be short-timers at Crypto.com Arena. They’re scheduled to open owner Steve Ballmer’s $1.2 billion, 18,000-seat Intuit Dome in neighboring Inglewood in 2024 when their Staples Center lease expires. However, the Clippers were among the first to react to the name change after hosting the San Antonio Spurs on Tuesday night.

“It’s kind of like just stripping the history here by calling it something else,” said Paul George, who grew up in Palmdale, outside of Los Angeles.

Reggie Jackson also had a hard time processing the name change.

“[The Lakers] have their history here, Kobe, especially my era, growing up, watching those championships. Shaq [O’Neal]. Nah, it’s too many memories. It’s gonna be hard to not call it Staples,” he said.

Boateng wants to help Hertha prove they’re ‘biggest club in Berlin’ | The Guardian Nigeria News

0

Kevin Prince-Boateng has played for 14 different European clubs but is now back at his hometown side, Hertha Berlin, and hoping to help them climb the Bundesliga table, starting with Saturday’s derby at rivals Union Berlin.

The 34-year-old is in the twilight of a career which has seen him play across Europe, including for AC Milan and Tottenham, as well as a brief loan spell at Barcelona.

Boateng rejoined Hertha on a free transfer in June from second-tier Italian club Monza, but has so far made just four league starts and is yet to play a full 90 minutes.

The former Ghana international is hoping to help Hertha start to tilt the balance of power in Berlin back in their favour after a difficult few seasons since Union were promoted to the top flight.

“We need to be ready for that battle, to go into every conflict and win that little one percent, which will change the game,” he told international media Wednesday.

German entrepreneur Lars Windhorst has pumped millions of euros into Hertha, but still without much reward.

“We’ve so much work to do, we have to show we are the biggest club in Berlin, which we are all dreaming of,” said Boateng.

But Union’s Alten Foersterei stadium is a notoriously hard place for away teams to go. It took mighty Bayern Munich to finally end Union’s 21-match unbeaten league run at home last month.

‘Rollercoaster’
Union have consistently punched above their weight since promotion in 2019, finishing 11th in their first Bundesliga campaign before a seventh-placed effort last term saw them qualify for Europe for only the second time.

They currently sit eighth in the table, four points clear of 13th-placed Hertha, who only narrowly avoided relegation last season.

Hertha have produced wildly erratic results this season, thrashed 5-0 by Bayern and 6-0 by RB Leipzig, yet earning wins over Eintracht Frankfurt and Borussia Moenchengladbach.

Boateng says Hertha, for whom he made his Bundesliga debut in 2005, need to tighten up at the back.

“(This season) has been a rollercoaster — sometimes we perform as an unbelievable team, so hard to beat,” he said. “Other weeks we have big holes in defence and aren’t aggressive.

“We need to stabilise that mentality to know every weekend is war. If we work on that, then it will be a positive season for us because we will be a very hard team to beat.”

Boateng — who prefers to be addressed as ‘Prince’ — says he has become a father figure at Hertha.

“I’m the boss — in a good way. I listen, I talk, I help, I’m the joker, I’m the singer, I do everything, but when I tell you to something, you do as I say,” he smiled.

“My experience helps a lot. There are so many things I have seen at other clubs and in other countries, I am always happy when I see someone reach a level they didn’t think they could reach.”

Nurturing influence
He cites the example of Manuel Locatelli, a Euro 2020 winner with Italy whom Boateng “gave a little bit of guidance” when they played together at Serie A club Sassuolo.

“Now he is at Juventus and is one the best midfielders, because he was intelligent enough to listen, to make sacrifices every morning and work hard.”

In Berlin, Boateng has taken Hertha youngsters Marco Richter and Maximilian Mittelstaedt under his wing.

“Now they start to believe in themselves, I like that, even if I give them a little dig in the ribs to say ‘Wake up, it’s 9am, let’s practise’.

“Just seeing these guys grow, I love that — that’s football.”

Hertha have six games left this year and Boateng says “it’s important” to win the derby ahead of a crucial run of games.

“We can have a peaceful Christmas (with some good results) and know you aren’t coming back to crisis or criticism.”

Mercedes review request to be assessed Thursday

F1 stewards to assess Mercedes review request on ThursdayFormula 1 stewards will hear Mercedes representatives on Thursday to decide whether to grant their request for a review of the Sao Paulo Grand Prix incident between title contenders Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen.

Mercedes asked for a review on Tuesday on grounds that significant new evidence had emerged since last Sunday’s race at Interlagos.

Red Bull’s championship leader Verstappen appeared to force Mercedes’ seven times world champion Hamilton off the track as they jostled for the lead.

The stewards took note of the lap 48 incident during the race but concluded, on the basis of the evidence they had, that no investigation was necessary.

Hamilton eventually passed Verstappen 11 laps later and won the race but Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff felt the Dutch driver should have been handed at least a five second penalty.

The stewards said in a statement on Wednesday that the hearing would determine whether the right of review existed in this case.

The Mercedes team manager and up to three witnesses were required to attend a video conference at 1700 local time (1400GMT) ahead of this weekend’s Qatar Grand Prix. (Reporting by Alan Baldwin)

Tyson Fury faces frustrating wait as WBC unable to order Dillian Whyte mandatory fight | Boxing | Sport

0

The Gypsy King has not fought in the UK since 2018 – and WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman has said in the past that he is hopeful of a fight between Fury and the Brixton Body Snatcher.

“The WBC order was very clear, that the winner of Fury vs Wilder has one month to try to secure the ultimate unification against Usyk, who defeated Joshua,” Sulaiman told talkSPORT.

“If they’re not capable of doing such, then the WBC would go with a mandatory, which is the interim champion.

“We have received from the British Boxing Board of Control the medical certification that Whyte could not fight Wallin because of the injury. So we are going to do what we promised, which is that way we are moving forward.”

Whyte believes the prospective clash with Fury would be the biggest all-British heavyweight title fight since Lennox Lewis versus Frank Bruno in 1993.

Khris Middleton set to rejoin Milwaukee Bucks for Los Angeles Lakers matchup

0

MILWAUKEE — Milwaukee Bucks forward Khris Middleton is practicing with his teammates again and expects to play Wednesday against the Los Angeles Lakers after missing eight games due to a positive COVID-19 test.

“I’ve been working out the last couple of days here while guys were on the road,” Middleton said after Tuesday’s practice. “In practice, I felt good. But everybody knows game shape is a totally different ballgame. I can’t wait to see how I feel tomorrow.”

Bucks coach Mike Budenholzer said Middleton will gradually work toward his usual amount of playing time.

In that regard, Bucks guard Jrue Holiday’s return after sitting out 10 games with COVID-19 last season could serve as a guide. Holiday played 18 minutes in each of his first two games back, then worked his way up to 23 minutes and 25 minutes before getting up to 32 minutes in his fifth game back.

Middleton acknowledged he was worried when he first learned about his diagnosis. He was not asked Tuesday about his vaccination status.

“Definitely panic,” Middleton said. “You hear all the stories out there. I definitely feel like my family and I were very fortunate that we didn’t have to end up in the hospital or get severe symptoms.”

The defending champion Bucks are hoping Middleton’s return can help them break out of a slump. Milwaukee went 3-5 in the games the two-time All-Star missed, and has a 6-8 record this season. The Bucks are about to play five straight home games after going 2/3 on a five-game trip.

Middleton averaged 20 points, 4.7 rebounds and 4.5 assists in the six games he has played.

“I think it’s underrated what he does for us defensively, underrated what he does for us on the boards, his communication, his leadership,” Budenholzer said. “Everybody’s going to talk about the scoring and the shooting and all those things. I don’t want to undervalue or underestimate those, but I think he really is a complete player and he’s a great leader.”

Middleton said he “had a couple of symptoms” and felt sick for about two days after going home. Middleton then started to feel better but still couldn’t begin workouts.

“Once I felt fine, I was still testing positive,” Middleton said. “You’ve got that itch, and I’m calling the trainers to see if I could do anything. They’d tell me I can’t get my heart rate up or exercise or work out or do anything till I get cleared by the doctors. That was the hardest part, just sitting, feeling like I was good to go but didn’t get clearance yet.”

The positive test also prevented Middleton from joining his teammates on their Nov. 8 trip to the White House in honor of their 2020-21 championship, though he participated from home. Bucks forward and two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo surprised Middleton by contacting him via FaceTime and having him speak to President Joe Biden.

“I had no idea,” Middleton said. “I was sitting on a couch with the family to see the whole event go on the livestream. I was waiting, waiting, waiting. Next thing, I get a call and I’m like, ‘Oh, OK, this is why you aren’t starting yet.’ It was definitely cool.”

Larin’s 2 goals lift Canada to 2-1 win over Mexico in World Cup qualifying match in Edmonton

0

A record-tying night from Cyle Larin not only propelled Canada to a 2-1 win over Mexico on Tuesday at Commonwealth Stadium, but put the Canadians at the top of their CONCACAF World Cup group.

That’s right.

As the eight remaining teams in CONCACAF each completed the eighth of their 14-game schedules in the Octagon, Canada (4-0-4) — a country that hasn’t been to a World Cup since 1986 — is tops.

A point up on the Americans. Two points up on the Mexicans and Panamanians. The top three qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, while the fourth-place team gets a final shot to qualify via an intercontinental playoff.

Larin’s two-goal performance gave him a total of 22 for the national side, tying Dwayne De Rosario as the top Canadian men’s goal-scorer in history.

Just before the end of the first half, a skipping shot from Canadian defender Alistair Johnston could only be parried by Mexican ‘keeper Guillermo Ochoa. The ball fell right into the path of Larin, who made no mistake.

Johnston’s shot looked to accelerate after it took a wicked hop on the artificial turf, an effect of a slick, cold ball on a hardened playing surface.

According to Environment Canada, the game time temperature was at — 9 C, with a wind chill of — 14 C.

If there was a moment that justified Canada Soccer’s decision to stage this game in Edmonton on a November night, that was it.

“The road games are really tough, everyone is going to use their terrains to their advantage,” Canadian coach John Herdman said.

“The games bring out the Canadian in our players. They all grew up on plastic pitch.”

Larin, who sat out Friday’s win over Costa Rica with a stomach bug, struck again seven minutes into the second half, as he side-footed home an inch-perfect cross from Stephen Eustaquio, leaving Ochoa flailing on the goal line.

Herdman said Larin had been so sick at the start of camp he “hadn’t eaten in two days.”

The Mexicans made it close with an 89th-minute goal from Hector Herrera.

And then, in five minutes of added time, they came at the Canadians in waves, forcing ‘keeper Milan Borjan into two goal-line saves.

“That was the longest six minutes of my bloody life,” Herdman said. “Thank goodness for Milan Borjan and all the other players who put their bodies on the line.”

Larin’s opener punctuated what was a chippy first half from both teams. Right after the opening kickoff, a Canadian defender flattened Mexican star winger Hirving “Chucky” Lozano. Guatemalan referee Mario Escobar ruled it a legal challenge, but Lozano was down on the turf for several minutes.

The game then transformed into a maelstrom of fouls — a total of 23 in the first half, with 13 of them called on the Mexicans.

But the Mexicans were held to zero attempts on target. It wasn’t until the dying moments of the team, down two goals, that the visitors came alive.

By the end of the match, the foul count was 21-16, Mexico.

Nigeria coach Rohr under fire after scraping into World Cup playoffs

Nigeria’s Super Eagles may have qualified for the final playoffs of the 2022 World Cup, but another unconvincing display sparked calls on Wednesday for coach Gernot Rohr to be fired.
