Milan miss out on top spot with derby draw | The Guardian Nigeria News

0

AC Milan missed the chance to go top of Serie A on Sunday after a 1-1 derby draw with Inter Milan which allowed Napoli to stay at the summit.

Stefano Pioli’s unbeaten side are level with Napoli on 32 points after a Stefan de Vrij own goal cancelled out Milan old boy Hakan Calhanoglu’s 11th-minute penalty for Inter.

Milan will be ruing a missed opportunity to claim first place after Napoli could only manage a 1-1 home draw with Verona earlier in the day.

Neither side will be happy with the point as they both had opportunities to win the match in front of 57,000 fans at the San Siro, with Alexis Saelemaekers striking the post late for Milan.

Lautaro Martinez meanwhile missed Inter’s second penalty of the night just before the half-hour mark and wasted other chances to snatch the winner for nominal away side Inter, who were looking for a win which would have boosted their title challenge.

As it is Simone Inzaghi’s team stay seven points behind the league’s two front-runners in third place.

Captain wants his side to build on experience for next T20 World Cup

Kyle Coetzer has called upon Cricket Scotland to be “bold and brave” in order to “push our whole organisation forward” after his side’s T20 World Cup campaign ended with heavy defeats against India and Pakistan.

Scotland defied the odds to qualify as group winners from the first stage of the competition in Oman, beating the hosts, Bangladesh and Papua New Guinea to reach the Super 12s stage for the first time in their history, but struggled in the second round, losing all five of their games.

They are already assured of a place in the first round of the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia by virtue of their Super 12s qualification, and Coetzer said that their success had inspired young players in Scotland and that his side had learned a lot they could take into next year’s campaign.

“I’m extremely proud of how we’ve played and what we’ve achieved,” Coetzer said. “We’ve got an excellent group and the guys are willing to learn and are trying to learn as fast as they can. Being exposed to what we have been in the Super 12s is only going to make us stronger and make us realise some of the skills and efforts you have to put in to achieve it at this level.

“Reaching the Super 12s was our immediate goal and we achieved that, but we need to learn as much as we possibly can because 12 months down the line, we’ve got another World Cup to go to. It’s going to be in different conditions so we’ll have to factor that in, but because we’ve experienced it, we now know what to expect.

“When we go home we have to be bold and brave, and make sure we push our whole organisation forward. We have to find a way to improve our ‘A’ team structures when we’re at home and find a way to keep developing this team, this squad of players that we have. We’ve got a long journey to go on but it’s an exciting one to be part of: who wouldn’t want to be part of Cricket Scotland right now?”

Coetzer said that Scotland had three key areas of improvement following the tournament: making better use of the powerplay with the bat, playing high-quality spin, and being “a little bit braver” with the ball by bluffing with field-sets.

“Not that we have never played here before – we have done quite a few times – but what we’ve realised is the importance of the powerplay,” he said. “We haven’t really nailed that yet with the bat.

“[We’ve learned] the importance of how to play high-quality spin bowling. I believe we’re a very strong side and very capable of playing spin bowling but it’s a different story when you come and play at Sharjah and some of these grounds out here, and the style in which the mystery spin is coming down. We have to go away and see how we can develop that.

“We need to be a little bit braver as a bowling unit, perhaps. We’ve noticed a number of the teams out here have actually been double-bluffing quite a lot, setting fields and bowling balls that don’t necessarily match up – but what they do do is they nail and execute those deliveries extremely well.”

Scotland have been in the Gulf since late September, having played World Cricket League fixtures against Oman and Papua New Guinea before their T20 World Cup preparation, but Coetzer denied that fatigue had been an issue, highlighting Richie Berrington‘s innings of 54 not out in their failed run chase against Pakistan as evidence.

“I wouldn’t like to say that,” he said. “We’ve prepared well. We think we’re playing pretty decent cricket but the standard has certainly gone up when we hit the Super 12 stage and we had to find a way to adapt as quickly as we possibly could. Playing cricket out in the UAE isn’t easy and we’ve learnt a lot from this occasion.

“We have been away from home for a little while but I wouldn’t like to use that as an excuse. We’ve got to look at ourselves and see where we can continue to improve. We’ve shown signs of that: look at Richie Berrington’s innings against a fine Pakistan attack. I thought he played outstandingly well and it may well go under the radar because we lost but it was a great knock.

“Hopefully from the seven weeks or so we’ve managed to inspire as many associate nations as we possibly can and hopefully inspire young cricketers back in Scotland. That’s why we’re here: we get to try and give it all for our country and be able to inspire as many people as we possibly can. That’s how I started many years ago, watching Scotland play in the World Cup and hopefully there’ll be a few more boys and girls coming through that will want to play cricket for their country.”

Siakam to return Sunday versus visiting Nets

0

TORONTO – Pascal Siakam is returning the court ahead of schedule — but it’s not a moment too soon for the Toronto Raptors’ all-star forward.

Six months since he last played a game, Siakam will make his season debut against the visiting Brooklyn Nets on Sunday, fully recovered from his off-season shoulder surgery.

“I can’t wait,” Siakam said after Saturday’s practice. “It definitely sucked just being there watching.”

Siakam, who averaged 21.4 points, 7.2 rebounds and 4.5 assists last season, had surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder in June.

The Raptors started 6-4 without him.

The 27-year-old has participated in full-contact practices all week, and said his shoulder is “good.”

Coach Nick Nurse said “he’s probably going to be fairly limited in his minutes” while he works back into top game shape. Nurse hadn’t determined whether Siakam will start or come off the bench.

“I know that my conditioning is probably not at the level that I want it to be,” Siakam said.

Nurse had said Friday night that Siakam’s return was imminent, but predicted it would happen next week.

His return is good news for a rebuilding team that has defied many pre-season expectations, winning its first four road games for the first time in franchise in history. The Raptors had won five straight before a 102-101 loss to Cleveland on Friday.

“If he can provide (better spacing) and he gets back to his 35, 38 per cent three-point shooting along with his size and length defensively . . . his up-the-floor game, rebounding, all that stuff,” Nurse said. “I think that’s what I’m probably most excited about now is it gives us another really good defending wing in that rotation.”

Nurse looks forward to having Siakam, OG Anunoby and Scottie Barnes guarding Nets stars Kevin Durant and James Harden on Sunday.

“You’ve got some size and some foot speed and . . . good defenders all of them, so it’s nice to have one more out there for sure,” he said.

Siakam believes he improved during the layoff. He’s been working out twice a day for more than a month.

“It’s been consistently being in the gym,” he said. “And it’s been obviously fun, but I think it’d be even more fun when I walk out on the floor.”

He credits the time he’s spent with assistant coach Earl Watson for changing the way he sees his game.

“Working with Earl, we watch a lot of different people. He would just randomly send me videos and the next day we would come in and talk about it and work on it on the court and just seeing different things,” Siakam said. “He is just opening my eyes to things I probably didn’t even see. It’s been great. Just continue to learn and hopefully that translates onto to the court.”

While being stuck on the sidelines hasn’t been fun, Siakam is pleased with how the team has fared without him, and is optimistic about the season.

“Offence is going to come, we’re gonna figure out each other, we’re gonna get better,” he said. ” But the level of attention to details on defence and making sure that we use our length and all that is going to be what’s going to make us tough to play. And that’s what we want to be. I love that.

“Everyone’s just doing their jobs . . . and it’s fun to watch. Obviously, we got to get better. But just everything that I’m seeing, I like it, I’m excited. Obviously I’m animated on the bench. If it was boring I would just sit there.”

Siakam said he could have spent another week practising before his return, but since the team’s game schedule is so busy, they’re not full practices anyways, “so might as well get on the court, try to work it out there, go out there and run,” Siakam said. “And I think that’s the best conditioning anyways.”

Tyson Fury told who his next opponent will be after WBC orders fight amid retirement talk | Boxing | Sport

It means Fury must defend his belt, and he will likely face Whyte in a homecoming defence.

The Gypsy King has not fought in the UK since 2018 – and WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman is hopeful of a fight between Fury and the Brixton Body Snatcher.

“The WBC order was very clear, that the winner of Fury vs Wilder has one month to try to secure the ultimate unification against Usyk, who defeated Joshua,” Sulaiman told talkSPORT.

“If they’re not capable of doing such, then the WBC would go with a mandatory, which is the interim champion.

Mexico Qualifying: Bottas steals it as Mercs thump Bulls

0

1-valtteri bottas mexico city grand prix

Valtteri Bottas stole the show to claim pole position for the 2021 Mexico City Grand Prix as Mercedes turned on the taps to destroy Red Bull with a front-row lockout, Lewis Hamilton was second fastest.

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen started the session as the favourite but issues with the RB16B’s rear-wing irked the team, doing them no favours, the Dutch ace having to settle for third ahead of teammate Sergio Perez, the local hero who had fans chanting throughout the session.

Lance Stroll crashed early, the Aston Martin driver going wide exiting Peraltada. Although the driver was unhurt, it was a heavy impact that required a lengthy clean-up and repairs to the TecPro supervised by Clerk of the Course Michael Masi before the session resumed.

In the end, the day belonged to Bottas because he delivered one of his best laps ever to take an unexpected pole, gatecrashing the world title fight between Hamilton and Verstappen by simply beating them both. The Finn has found a rich vein of form since his move to Alfa Romeo was announced.

In FP3, a few hours earlier few would have bet against Verstappen taking pole in a battle between the aero magnificence of the Red Bulls against the mighty power of Mercedes. But when it mattered, in Q3, Mercedes came to life and really revealed for the first time this weekend the hand they are holding, and its formidable.

It was a big turnaround, from FP3 to qualy, even by the World Champs, with Bottas too good on the day; he said afterwards: “They were awesome laps, especially my first run in Q3. I couldn’t quite match the same last sector in the second one. But honestly, that first run in Q3 was one of my best laps, it was a good feeling.

“With higher temperatures this afternoon came our way and we tried to optimise everything with tyre temps and set-up. It was a joy to drive,” added Bottas.

Hamilton gave it his best shot but admitted his teammate had something extra when it mattered: “Valtteri did an amazing job. He has been driving so well these last few races. It’s really great for the team. They have been working so hard and we didn’t think we had the pace this weekend. So to lock out the front row is pretty special.

“I really have no idea [what changed]. They were like six tenths ahead at one stage and then four-tenths ahead, but whatever happened once we got to qualifying we had better pace. I’m just as shocked as everyone but we’ll still take it,” declared the World Champion, who will be hunting his third victory at the venue on race day – he won in 2019.

When Bottas went top with his astounding lap in Q3, it dawned on Red Bull they had no chance, even with Perez offering Verstappen a tow during their first runs the gap was over three-tenths of a second.

Adding insult to injury, with Perez leading the second run and Verstappen behind for the tow, the Mexican ahead came upon an errant Yuki Tsunoda in the AlphaTauri, which forced the Red Bull onto the grass.

Verstappen, winner here in 2017 and 2018, was affected by the incident, but spoke of the positives parc ferme afterwards: “It seemed like through qualifying the balance went away a little bit, but actually the last lap I was on for a good lap.

“I don’t know what happened in front of me but there were two guys going off and I thought there was going to be a yellow flag, so I back out and the lap, of course, was destroyed. Even with that and not having a great balance I think we could have still gone for that pole lap.

“Of course third is not amazing but I think it’s still better than starting second. Qualifying didn’t go our way but we’re not using these [soft] tyres so there’s still a lot to fight for,” concluded Verstappen, who leads Hamilton by 12 points ahead of Sunday’s race.

Mercedes lead Red Bull in the 2021 F1 Constructors’ Standings by 23 points after 17 Rounds.

Pierre Gasly made it three Honda-powered drivers in the top five, the AlphaTauri driver having one of his inspired weekends thus far.

The Ferrari versus McLaren battle was as close as ever, with Carlos Sainz edging into sixth despite a problem packed session, which saw him pottering around the track slowly as the systems on his car booted up. They were tense moments until he got going.

Sainz was eight tenths down on the top time, and a mere 0.002 up on McLaren’s Daniel Ricciardo, with Charles Leclerc in the other Ferrari less than a tenth down on his teammate.

Tsunoda was ninth but faces engine-related grid penalties as does Lando Norris who rounded out the top ten, in the McLaren, but will drop down the order too.

Sebastian Vettel was 11th, and the rest were pretty much where expected apart from Alpine whose Hungarian Grand Prix winner Esteban Ocon was only good for 15th while teammate Fernando Alonso did not make it beyond Q1.

Mr Saturday aka George Russell was at it again, planting the Williams 13th, while teammate Nicolas Latifi was only good for 17th, eight tenths down on his teammate in Q1.

Penalties for Stroll, Russell, Ocon, Tsunoda and Norris means they drop down to the back of the grid which will make for an interesting lower midfield battle.

Philadelphia 76ers resume fining Ben Simmons, sources say

0

The Philadelphia 76ers fined All-Star guard Ben Simmons his $360,000 game salary for missing Thursday night’s victory over the Detroit Pistons and plan to continue fining him until he cooperates with team physicians on his mental health and fulfills other basketball-related obligations, sources told ESPN on Friday.

The Sixers will again place Simmons’ future salary into an escrow account, sources said. Earlier this season, Philadelphia released Simmons’ money from escrow after he had been initially cooperative on a path toward returning to play.

Sixers officials believe that they have been supportive of Simmons’ stated need for mental health assistance and that they are left no choice but for these actions in response to the three-time All-Star’s refusal to provide basic details of his course of mental health meetings, evaluation or treatments or to accept consultation with any specialists arranged by the team, sources said. Simmons has worked with mental health professionals via the National Basketball Players Association.

For the Sixers and Simmons, this is the latest salvo in an increasingly antagonistic four-month standoff. Simmons — with four years and $147 million left on his contract — has requested a trade and has expressed no desire to rejoin the team.

Simmons has been showing up regularly at the team’s facility for some daily basketball activity with coaches and individual teammates, but Philadelphia will begin fining him again for failures to participate in other requirements, such as strength training, film study and some presence at team practices and game-day shootarounds, sources said.

Despite Simmons’ absence — and with three victories without starting forward Tobias Harris because of COVID-19 — the Sixers are 7-2 and owners of the best record in the Eastern Conference.

After Simmons incurred $2 million in penalties for a training camp holdout and limited return to the team, Philadelphia stopped fining him two weeks ago when he told team officials and teammates that he wasn’t mentally prepared to play and planned to seek professional assistance.

In that time, Simmons, 25, has worked cooperatively with his own and team physicians on a back ailment but has told the Sixers repeatedly that he is unwilling to share information on his course of action in pursuing mental health treatment, sources said.

Simmons and his representatives have been unhappy with Philadelphia’s handling of the situation since public criticism leveled at the guard in the wake of his poor Eastern Conference semifinals performance in June.

The Sixers have struggled to find a trade package that meets their asking price and tried unsuccessfully to persuade Simmons to return to play until a deal can be found. Philadelphia president of basketball operations Daryl Morey has said that the Sixers want a high-level player in return for Simmons, and that hasn’t been available yet in months of trade discussions.

Xavi faces ‘biggest challenge of career’ as Barcelona coach | The Guardian Nigeria News

0

Xavi Hernandez said he is prepared for the “biggest challenge of his career” before leaving Qatar for Spain on Saturday, as Barcelona’s legendary former midfielder returns home to take over as coach.

Xavi’s appointment was confirmed by Barca in the early hours of Saturday morning and the 41-year-old will be presented to fans at Camp Nou on Monday.

He landed in Barcelona at just before 1 pm local time on Saturday after travelling with his family, agents and coaching staff.

“I’m very happy as you can imagine, it’s the biggest challenge of my career,” Xavi had told Spanish journalists at Doha airport. “I’m going home and I am very happy.”

Xavi faces a huge challenge, with Barcelona adrift of La Liga’s top four, struggling to make the knock-out stages of the Champions League and grappling with debts of more than a billion euros.

“I have also experienced bad situations,” Xavi said. “It’s not the best moment in the history of the club but I want to explain what my idea is and to work hard, to make a team. Obviously, the first thing is to talk to the players to see how they are.”

Xavi left Camp Nou to play for Qatari club Al Sadd in 2015, after making 767 appearances for Barcelona, with eight La Liga titles and four Champions Leagues among his 25 trophies.

“It’s time to come home. Welcome, Xavi,” Barca tweeted in the early hours of Saturday morning, as Spain slept.

“It wasn’t goodbye, it was seeing you later,” it wrote, along with a video montage of the player’s departure in 2015.

Barcelona said in a statement they had reached an agreement with Xavi to become a first-team coach for the rest of the season and two more seasons, replacing the sacked Ronald Koeman.

“It is expected that Xavi Hernandez will arrive in Barcelona this weekend and that on Monday 8, November his presentation as new FC Barcelona first-team coach will take place in an event open to the public at Camp Nou,” it said.

Nicknamed the “Maquina” (the Machine), Xavi is widely considered one of the club’s greatest players and there is huge excitement about his potential as a coach after his influence on the iconic Barca team managed by Pep Guardiola.

His passing style was seen as the embodiment of Guardiola’s “tiki-taka” team that won the treble in 2009.

“One of the greatest midfield maestros of all time, he helped redefine the art with his creative mind, pinpoint passing and sublime ability to read the game,” Barca said in their statement, heralding the return of “an absolute legend”.

Al Sadd, which Xavi had coached since 2019, hours earlier said they had reached an agreement with Barca and posted photos on social media of the Spaniard saying goodbye to the players and staff.

– ‘The dream’ –

Barcelona’s attempt to appoint Xavi as Koeman’s successor had been held up on Friday over his Al Sadd release clause, with Xavi and Barca considering splitting the payment to complete the deal.

Al Sadd said Barca had agreed to pay the clause in Xavi’s contract, which is reportedly set at around five million euros ($5.8 million), but Barcelona did not give any details of the deal in their statement.

Spanish sports daily Marca headlined the club hero’s return and estimated the cost to Barca of sacking recent managers Ernesto Valverde, Quique Setien and Koeman at 32 million euros.

Xavi had made no secret of his desire to return to Barcelona, which he joined through the club’s La Masia academy at the age of 11.

“My main objective, when I can do it, is Barca,” Xavi told Marca last year. “It’s my home, that’s the dream.”

Barcelona sat ninth in La Liga on Saturday morning, with concerns growing they might not qualify for next season’s Champions League.

The club are also in dire financial straits, having posted debts of 1.35 billion euros. They could not afford to renew Lionel Messi’s contract in the summer, and the Argentine left for Paris Saint-Germain.

Xavi will also be charged with improving the team’s style of play, which was a key criticism during the tenure of Koeman, another former Barca player.

Xavi’s flight is due to touch down as Barca take on Celta Vigo in La Liga in Juan Barjuan’s last game as caretaker coach before he hands over to the man the fans are pinning their hopes on to turn the club around.

Proud of way he ‘fought,’ Tim Petrovic leads with Jim Furyk at PGA Tour’s Champions event

0

BOCA RATON, Fla. — Tim Petrovic birdied the final two holes for an 11-under 61 and a share of the lead with Jim Furyk after a 36-hole Saturday in the TimberTech Championship.

Furyk closed with a birdie for a 64 to match Petrovic at 14-under 130 at The Old Course at Broken Sound, a day after 5 inches of rain wiped out play in the second of three PGA Tour Champions playoff events for the Charles Schwab Cup.

The 55-year-old Petrovic is winless on the 50-and-over tour and winning the 2005 Zurich Classic of New Orleans for his lone PGA Tour title.

“I decided I was going to hit a few fairways in the afternoon,” Petrovic said. “It didn’t start out so good this morning. I had the lefts going this morning. I think I hit it in the water on 10 to start the round and just made a great bogey, which felt like a birdie. I could have made a double there very easy.

“Just kind of fought. I just fought my way through the round and hit a couple fairways and started making some putts. Shooting 3 under this morning, I mean, that was a godsend the way I started the round. In the afternoon I got myself in the fairway and just got the putter rolling. Got on the greens and had some good reads.”

Furyk won the U.S. Senior Open in July for his third Champions victory.

Steven Alker was a stroke back after a 63. The New Zealander made it to the second postseason event after having to Monday qualify for his first PGA Tour Champions tournament just over two months ago.

“I played solid,” Alker said. “I didn’t miss too many greens, too many fairways. A few putts here and there, so it was fun. It was good.”

The top 54 players in the Charles Schwab Cup qualified for the event, and the top 36 after the TimberTech Championship will advance to the Charles Schwab Cup Championship next week in Phoenix.

Ernie Els was 11 under after a 66 in a group with Furyk and Charles Schwab Cup leader Bernhard Langer. Coming off a victory in Virginia in the playoff-opening Dominion Energy Charity Classic, the 64-year-old Langer had a 69.

We’ll consolidate on Nigeria’s regional dominance, says Tikon | The Guardian Nigeria News

0

With Nigeria dominating all seven events at the second ITTF Africa Western Region Championships, President of the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF), Ishaku Tikon believes the federation would consolidate on the feat.

For four days, players from Nigeria, Ghana, Benin Republic, Togo, Liberia and Cote d’Ivoire competed in the tournament with Nigeria clinching all the top medals in singes (men and women), doubles (men and women), team (men and women) and mixed doubles events.

“I am so delighted that we were able to host the second edition of the regional tournament and with the feat achieved by Team Nigeria is a confirmation of our efforts and we hope to consolidate on this by ensuring that the players are monitored and nurtured to become world beaters. Nigeria as the big brother in the region will continue to lift others with the hope that the region will become the hub of table tennis in no distant future,” Tikon said.

He continues: “I believe with what we have started in the region, we can continue to become competitive in Africa and the world at large.

There is no doubt that the region would not relent in its efforts to produce great players, and there are plans to make the tournament a permanent feature in the ITTF calendar. I must commend all the players and the delegates for their understanding, and we hope we can continue to raise the profile of the sport in the region.”

The NTTF boss however, lauded the Lagos State Government through the Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC) for being a good host, while also thanking the sponsors for keeping faith with table tennis amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

Boxing tonight: Schedules, live streams, fight time for Canelo Alvarez vs Caleb Plant | Boxing | Sport

0

Canelo Alvarez is targeting more titles and more history to enhance his prestigious boxing legacy when he bids to become the first-ever undisputed super-middleweight world champion on Saturday night in Las Vegas against Caleb Plant. The Mexican will table his WBC, WBA and WBO straps in a bid to win Plant’s IBF title when the pair go to war at the MGM Grand.

There has already been plenty of needle between the two fighters ahead of this weekend’s highly-anticipated contest.

The fighters traded blows on stage at September’s press conference in Beverly Hills as a right hand from Canelo drew blood just under Plant’s eye.

‘Sweet Hands’ has a scar to show for the melee as he looks to carry out his revenge in the ring and cause one of the biggest upsets in modern boxing history.

Plant is no mug to his credit, boasting a record of 21-0 and four successful world title defences since winning the red strap in January 2019 against Jose Uzcategui in Los Angeles.

But he will have to turn in, without doubt, his best ever career performance if he is to pull this off against the pound-for-pound king Canelo.

The 31-year-old has lost just once in 59 professional outings, winning seven consecutive fights since his controversial draw with Gennady Golovkin at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas in 2017.

Canelo successfully stopped Billy Joe Saunders last time out in Dallas, Texas when he shattered the Brit’s eye socket in the eighth round of a pulsating contest.

Many are expecting Canelo to close the show again this time around against Plant before potentially moving back up to light-heavyweight where the likes of Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol await him.
