Anunoby has career-best 36, Raptors beat Knicks

0

NEW YORK (AP) — The Toronto Raptors were midway through a dominant third quarter when Svi Mykhailiuk’s basket gave them the lead for good.

It was 68-66 — the final score of the first NBA game, exactly 75 years earlier.

With a shot clock and 3-pointer in today’s game, the Raptors just kept right on scoring.

Anunoby had a career-high 36 points and the Raptors won their fourth straight by beating the New York Knicks 113-104 on Monday night in the 75th anniversary of the NBA’s first game.

Gary Trent Jr. added 26 points for the Raptors, who surged into the lead by outscoring the Knicks 38-22 in the third quarter. Fred VanVleet finished with 17 points, nine rebounds and seven assists.

The Raptors were so good in the third that coach Nick Nurse didn’t make a substitution, something he couldn’t recall happening in his time as their coach.

“Those guys were just on an incredible tied-together roll,” Nurse said.

The Knicks beat the Toronto Huskies on Nov. 1, 1946, at Maple Leaf Gardens. They were in good shape to win this one and continue their strong start to the season, before the Raptors ran right by them.

The Raptors had a 21-3 advantage in fast-break points, turning 17 Knicks turnovers into 20 points. Anunoby pointed to that as a key to the third quarter.

“Just being aggressive, shooting with confidence. Getting stops and running out,” he said.

But Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau thought the pivotal point of the game was actually earlier, when the Knicks lost most of a 15-point lead they had with 4 1/2 minutes left in the first half.

“It was really the middle of the second quarter. That’s where the game turned,” Thibodeau said.

It never turned back after Mykhailiuk’s 3-pointer made it 68-66 with 7:22 left in the third. Toronto was up 91-79 by the time the quarter ended and by as much as 15 in the fourth quarter.

Mykhailiuk finished with 15 points in place of Scottie Barnes, who was leading all rookies with 18.1 points and 8.9 rebounds per game. He has a sprained right thumb.

RJ Barrett scored 27 points for the Knicks, who were trying for their first 6-1 start since 2012-13. Julius Randle had 22 points, nine rebounds and five assists.

“When we get outplayed, outworked, it’s not a good feeling. It’s definitely not a good feeling,” Barrett said. “That’s something we hang our hat on, is coming out there and outworking everybody.”

The Raptors made seven 3-pointers in the third quarter after hitting just five in the first half. Anunoby and VanVleet each scored 10 in the period, and Toronto kept a double-digit lead for most of the fourth quarter.

TIP-INS

Raptors: Precious Achiuwa started at center but Nurse went with Khem Birch to start the second half after Achiuwa was 1 for 6. The Raptors outscored the Knicks by 20 points with Birch in the game. … Nurse said there was no timeline for Barnes, saying the No. 4 pick’s thumb was tender and sore but didn’t seem awfully bad. … Anunoby’s previous best was 32 points.

Knicks: The Knicks were short-handed at center after backup Taj Gibson played just 10 minutes before leaving with a sprained left ankle. Nerlens Noel is still out with a sore left knee. …. The Knicks are one of only three franchises to play in every NBA season, along with the Boston Celtics and the Warriors, who were the Philadelphia Warriors when the league began.

CELEBRATING 75

Nurse liked the idea of the NBA scheduling another New York-Toronto matchup exactly 75 years after the first one.

“The rematch. I think we owe them one, don’t we?” he joked before the game.

Tyson Fury is set to help brother Tommy train for his grudge boxing match against Jake Paul. The fight between the pair has been locked in for December 18 in Tampa, Florida.

Following confirmation the fight will go ahead, Tyson revealed he will help his younger sibling prepare for the epic grudge match following months of verbal jousting between the two fighters.

The 33-year-old posted on Twitter: “Massive congratulations to Tommy Fury on his big big fight news. Living the dream daily. See you soon bro, Vegas baby Vegas.”

Their father John confirmed the pair would be together in the States as Tommy prepares to face arch-rival Paul.

“Tyson’s going to be in his corner that night. I think Tyson’s flying out there in a few weeks to help him out,” John told BT Sport Boxing.

“Whatever desire he’s missing, Tyson will put there, I’m sure of that. Tyson will sort his head out so I’m looking for a Tommy win in explosive fashion – the end of Jake Paul.”

JUST IN: Jake Paul vows to make Tyson Fury promise true as he confirms Tommy Fury fight

“Tommy knows he’s up against a stacked deck, but he should still beat Jake Paul at a canter, and if he can’t, there’s no way in the boxing world for him.”

Last month John issued a stark warning to Tommy, promising he would make his son “retire” if he loses to Paul.

He told the True Geordie Podcast: “I see Tommy splattering Jake Paul all over the ring, within four to five rounds. If he doesn’t, it’s over for him! He knows that.

“No pressure Tommy lad, but let me tell you, you will be called Tommy Fumbles as well… if it’s a close fight, Tommy’s retired.

“If Tommy struggles to beat him, he’s retired from boxing [because Jake Paul] is a YouTuber! He’s gotta be knocking Jake Paul out…”

While Tommy prepares to fight Paul next month, the 22-year-old and girlfriend Molly-Mae Hague are coming to terms with their house being burgled.

The thieves stole £800,000 worth of goods, which included jewellery.

A representative for the influencer told Mail Online: “Molly is doing well considering the circumstances.

‘Bing Bong’ – New York Knicks’ latest rallying cry is a simple phrase that pays homage to the city’s roots

0

You might’ve heard the term “Knickstape” as a slogan for the New York Knicks and their fan base. Well, that could be retiring. Replaced by two simple words: “Bing Bong.”

Knicks fan Jordie Bloom shouted the phrase on opening night of the Knicks’ season in a video from Sidetalk, a one-minute street show by New York University students Trent Simonian and Jack Byrne that conducts interviews in New York City. Their Twitter and Instagram pages combine for over 700,000 followers and their YouTube channel has more than 3 million views. They’ve interviewed celebrities such as Lil Uzi Vert, Bella Hadid and A$AP Rocky.

Since Bloom’s viral moment, the phrase has become a social media sensation, popping up on Twitter during Knicks games this season. But what does the phrase even mean? Where does it come from?

“The phrase is derived from the subway doors closing: ‘Stand clear of the closing doors please; bing-bong,'” Bloom said.

He added that Sidetalk NYC’s intro sound to their videos and New York rapper Nems were also sources of inspiration for the saying. Nems has a song titled “Bing Bong” that was released in August.

That outburst wasn’t planned, but Bloom was amped up after a thrilling overtime victory against a rival Boston Celtics team.

“I was leaving MSG to a sea full of happy and joyful Knick fans … I felt the need to walk over to them (the Sidetalk hosts) and rip a ‘Bing Bong,'” Bloom said.

His two-word phrase has become the Knicks’ new rallying cry this season. The team, along with some celebrity fans like late-night host and comedian Desus Nice, have embraced “Bing Bong.”

Even players like guard Evan Fournier are using it.

Fournier is in his first season with the Knicks, averaging 17.5 points per game, second on the team. After a win against the Philadelphia 76ers on Tuesday, the guard added the phrase to a postgame tweet.

Opponents have also poked fun at the new slogan. After the Knicks suffered their only loss of the season (to the Orlando Magic on Oct. 24), Orlando’s official Twitter account reminded the Knicks of Bloom’s viral words.

The Knicks’ resurgence in the NBA is a welcome sight for Bloom.

“I can’t remember a time in my life when I was not a die-hard Knicks fan,” Bloom said. “My relationship with the team is pure and authentic love, with a desire to see them succeed.”

The Knicks have jumped out to a 5-1 start to the season. Julius Randle and Fournier have been leaders amongst the group, while veterans Derrick Rose and Taj Gibson and have provided stability from the bench. Rising young players RJ Barrett and Obi Toppin are also contributors to New York’s hot start.

“Everyone in the Knicks community is a team — from the players to the podcasts to the everyday fan, the energy and love is unmatched,” Bloom said. “I don’t see any reason to say they can’t make a magical playoff run this year.”

Bloom declined to say if the team has reached out to him yet, but he’s making the most of the publicity. He’s made a Twitter account and sells shirts with his famous catchphrase on them.

The “Bing Bong” community continues to grow, as each Knicks win helps the phrase gain even more traction. After Barrett put up a career-high 35 points in a victory against the New Orleans Pelicans on Saturday, Fournier asked social media to shower his teammate in “Bing Bongs” to celebrate his big night.

The Knicks head into Monday’s game against the Toronto Raptors tied for the best record in the NBA. It’s probably safe to say that “Bing Bong” will be heard somewhere in Madison Square Garden.

Alan Igglesden dies aged 57 after long battle with brain tumour

Former Kent and England seamer was diagnosed more than two decades ago

Alan Igglesden, the former Kent and England seamer, has died at the age of 57 after being diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour more than two decades ago.

In a statement on Monday, Kent said they was devastated to learn of Igglesden’s passing. “The thoughts of everyone at the club are with his wife Liz and his friends and family at this desperately sad time,” the statement said.

Igglesden made seven appearances for England – three Tests and four ODIs – between 1989-94, taking eight wickets, including those of Mark Taylor and Steve Waugh on debut in the sixth Test of the 1989 Ashes series.

Farnborough-born Igglesden made his debut for Kent against Somerset in July 1986 and he went on to make 283 appearances for the club, taking 592 wickets across first-class and List A games, including 19 five-wicket hauls for the county of his birth.

The right-armer was awarded Kent cap No. 187 in 1989 during a season in which he took 90 wickets in 42 matches for the club, having made his England Test debut that year.

He retired from the game in 1999, aged 34, when scans revealed a brain tumour after he had suffered an epileptic fit while playing minor counties cricket for Berkshire. He underwent pioneering treatment, which shrunk the tumour, but he faced a number of setbacks as the tumour showed signs of resuming its growth. In 2018 he suffered the first of two major strokes in the space of three years which left him receiving end-of-life care.

Igglesden raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for the Brain Tumour Charity, the largest dedicated fundraiser of research into brain tumours globally, and an organisation of which he was a patron. Earlier this year, his family released a film to raise funds and awareness for the Professional Cricketers’ Trust, the charitable arm of the Professional Cricketers’ Association (PCA).

The PCA said: “Iggy’s efforts on behalf of the Trust were characteristic of his unwaveringly positive attitude towards life during his final years. He remained steadfastly committed to those who he loved, retaining a sharp sense of humour and a remarkable zest for life, even appearing via FaceTime at a golf day held in his honour to raise funds for both the Trust and the Brain Tumour Charity as recently as October. He will be sorely missed by everyone associated with Kent, as well as the wider cricket community.”

Tech Draft: Austin’s uncelebrated behind the scenes

0

tech draft Moments behind the technical scenes at the 2021 US GP

At Austin’s 2021 United States Grand Prix, there were two moments that weren’t just important to the end result, but also went uncelebrated behind the scenes. Tech Draft has a look.

When FP1 concluded on Friday, Mercedes identified a serious structural risk with its underfloor, and on Saturday during FP3 Red Bull identified a just as serious risk with their rear wing assembly.

From the technical perspective of vehicle operations in Formula 1, things take a traditional engineering route. If you’re an engineer, you will know what I’m on about when I talk about risk dashboards of traffic light systems where red means stop and react immediately.

For Mercedes and Red Bull, last weekend at the Circuit of The Americas, the red light flagging immediate action was flashing very brightly, and the primary risk was the very same in both instances: catastrophic composite failure.

One thing about F1 that some either don’t know, or simply refuse to acknowledge is that each design is bespoke, and at the front of the grid, design configuration is rarely in a state of status quo.

There simply isn’t a spare parts truck parked out the back full of interchangeable components to be swapped out if composite parts start cracking. In F1, because the design is unique, when it comes to composite parts, you’re essentially stuck with whatever you bring, including the design revision.

Unless parts are failing to impact or a production quality issue, they are under-designed and the only resolutions are to reinforce in-situ, or fast track remanufacture at the factory and expedite ship in.

When the factory is in the UK and you’re racing in Texas, you need to do something on-site, and fast!

I get asked quite often about what roles and responsibilities exist in the garage environment at a Grand Prix, and the need to perform quality intricate composites repair rapidly is a good example that the roles are diverse and multi-disciplined.

It’s easy to expect that the mechanics would cross-skill and back up as composites technicians, but who is going to disassemble and re-assemble in a fast-tracked repair whilst the mechanic is repairing carbon?

Believe me, as in the example of Red Bull’s rear wing composite failure, the high-pressure environment between FP3 and Q1 when a repair is needed, composites lay-ups are being done before a part is disassembled, whilst it’s being pulled off, and whilst its being put back on.

The cool thing about the F1 garage environment in a situation like that is that everyone is trained from a multi-disciplined perspective and chips in, regardless of how high up the chain they are.

And, the process is mapped, documented, and even rehearsed. Think of the never ending and highly detailed simulation training the heroic Project Apollo astronauts endured prior to launch: all risk covered to the nth degree.

The Sky F1 TV feed leading into qualifying on Saturday was a great example, as several high ranking Red Bull engineering staff could be seen performing seemingly menial tasks such as waving heat guns to cure hurriedly laid-up composite reinforcements.

Clearly, the highly organized response in such a tight time frame to both Verstappen’s and Perez’s cars was successful as the result was a win and double podium on Sunday.

Likewise, Mercedes response to a serious concern about their diffusers’ ability to withstand the seriously bumpy surface at Austin in such a tight time frame was another demonstration of multi-skilling and organizational excellence.

Nevertheless, as the 2021 season approaches such a tightly contested conclusion, and we all discuss what will be the factors differentiating who wins, they are highly organized responses to unforeseen risks such as these that may well contribute.

Jake Paul’s ‘bizarre clauses’ for Tommy Fury fight include name change to Tommy Fumbles | Boxing | Sport

In response, Fury, younger brother of Heveryweight boxing champion Tyson, posted a social media message of his own which read: “Time to do what should’ve been done to you a long time ago….You’re getting knocked spark out.”

While Fury is gearing up to face Paul next month, the 22-year-old and girlfriend Molly-Mae Hague are coming to terms with their house being burgled recently.

The culprits stole £800,000 worth of goods, which included jewellery.

A representative for the influencer told Mail Online: “Molly is doing well considering the circumstances. “It has been a very distressing time but she is trying to be positive.”

Barnes leads Raptors past Pacers

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Scottie Barnes scored 21 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to help the Toronto Raptors beat the Indiana Pacers 97-94 on Saturday night.

Barnes, the No. 4 overall pick in the draft this year, hit a pair of free throws with 6.2 seconds remaining to give the Raptors the final margin. The Pacers’ Domantas Sabonis missed a hurried 3-pointer in the final seconds.

The Raptors never led by more than three until the final quarter, then surged to a 92-84 advantage on Fred VanFleet’s three with 1:44 remaining. VanFleet finished with 16 points. OG Anunoby had 15.

Milwaukee Bucks to celebrate NBA title at White House on Nov. 8, sources say

0

The Milwaukee Bucks are scheduled to make a trip to the White House to celebrate winning the 2020-21 NBA title on Nov. 8, sources told ESPN.

The Bucks will be the first NBA team to visit the White House since the 2016 Cleveland Cavaliers visited former President Barack Obama. Milwaukee won its first championship in 50 years in July, beating the Phoenix Suns in six games.

The previous four champions — the Golden State Warriors in 2017 and ’18, the Toronto Raptors in 2019 and the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020 — did not make the trip. The Warriors and Raptors didn’t go during Donald Trump’s presidency.

The Lakers did not make the trip this past year due to travel complications because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Asked last season about making the trip, LeBron James told reporters, “It would be great, but I have no idea what we can even do right now besides hotel, arena and home.”

Shortly after Biden beat Trump in the November election, Warriors forward Draymond Green tweeted at James, “y’all can go to the White House and celebrate y’all title G!” James responded: “YO we back up in there my G!!! I’m taking my tequila and vino too!”

Milwaukee plays the Wizards in Washington on Nov. 7 and travels to Philadelphia on Nov. 9.

The Bucks are 3-2 on the season and host the San Antonio Spurs on Saturday night.

ESPN’s Dave McMenamin contributed to this report.
