Turkish Grand Prix: Bottas wins, Hamilton fumes

Valtteri Bottas scored a lights-to-flag victory in fine style to win the 2021 Turkish Grand Prix for Mercedes in tricky conditions demanding intermediate tyres for the entire 58-lap race, while teammate Lewis Hamilton was left fuming after disagreeing with his team’s strategy call.

Bottas delivered a commanding performance, to take his 10th Grand Prix victory, his first since Russia over a year ago. This performance on Sunday will rank as one of his best, the kind of showing that he should have had more often for the team he leaves for Alfa Romeo at the end of this season.

The Mercedes driver said in parc ferme after the race: “It’s been a while but feels good. From my side, it was one of the best races I’ve had – ever. Apart from that one little slide I’ve had everything under control.

“The car was good in every condition, really good confidence in it. I’m glad everything went smooth for once for me. It was nice. When only one drying line, it doesn’t need much to go off. I definitely needed to focus all through the race.

“A difficult one, but feels like a well-earned victory,” added Bottas.

The Finn held off Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, building a gap of around four seconds by the halfway mark, crossing the finish line over a dozen seconds clear of the Red Bull driver.

Verstappen stalked the leading Mercedes throughout the race but simply did not have the firepower to attack for the lead. But the result means the Dutch ace is now on 262.5 points, and leads the F1 championship standings by six points from Hamilton.

The Red Bull driver summed up his race:  “It was not easy today, I mean the track was very greasy and we had to manage the tyres all race so we couldn’t really push. It seemed like Valtteri had more pace and could look after the tyres better as well, so I’m happy to finish in second place.”

“It was all about managing the tyres, so you were never really pushing. I’m happy to be on the podium. I think its been close the whole year and I’m sure in Austin it will be another close battle with Mercedes.

“We just have to keep pushing, keep trying to improve and we’ll see where we are at the end – but it’s been a great season so far,” added Verstappen.

Sergio Perez was third for Red Bull, the Mexican veteran delivering exactly what he was hired to do by Red Bull; help his teammate, and he did so brilliantly fending off Hamilton’s attack in a jaw-dropping wheel-to-wheel duel with the Champ. Exactly what the doctor (Marko!) would have ordered.

Perez said: “It was an intense race in the first stint – fighting with Lewis and fighting with Charles. It was just one of those races of having to be patient, push at the right times and manage the tyres well. You didn’t really know what was going on with the tyres. It was hard to manage them out there today.”

This partnership is getting stronger and stronger, but Red Bull still trail Mercedes in the F1 constructors’ standings by 36 points.

Hamilton looked set for a podium after staying out long, and only pitting when the Mercedes pit-wall called him in. When he reemerged in fifth, the seven-time F1 world champion was fuming that third went begging.

Charles Leclerc was fifth, the Ferrari driver leading after the halfway mark as one of the frontrunners who did not stop. It was touch and go whether they kept him out, but on lap 48 he pitted and went on to finish fourth. A gamble to stay out might have served him better, but his team thought the gamble was not worth it.

Ditto Mercedes with Hamilton. We will never know if a no-stop strategy would have won the race, as the drivers certainly wanted to give it a crack but their teams lacked the courage.

Earlier, after constant overnight rain, heavy grey clouds loomed over Istanbul park as Bottas blitzed off the line to take the lead from Verstappen and Leclerc chasing, after a frenetic first lap in which Fernando Alonso was tagged by the AlphaTauri of Gasly which sent the Alpine into a spin.

Apart from that, and Alonso tagging Mick Schumacher a lap later, which earned him and Gasly a five seconds penalty, the order across the field remained pretty much the same with the exception of Hamilton who started 11th in the Mercedes, and back of the grid starter Ferrari’s Sainz powering through the field.

Gasly served his penalty, which seemed a tad harsh as he was the meat in the Turn 1 sandwich, but Stewards probably feared the wrath of Alonso if the Frenchman had not been penalized, especially after the Spaniard was, for his shenanigans.

Nevertheless, the AlphaTauri driver delivered another stellar performance to finish sixth, which might have been fourth had luck gone his way.

Lando Norris finished seventh on a weekend that was not kind to McLaren, with Daniel Ricciardo starting from the back row of the grid to finish 13th. Unlike Italy and Russia, Turkey was not a happy hunting ground.

From the back of the grid, Carlos Sainz was clinical in his one-track mind to get further up the order pulling off some great overtakes. Driver of the Day, and eighth place rewarded his efforts at the tenth edition of the Turkish Grand Prix.

Lance Stroll again showed his prowess in races of high attrition, the Aston Martin driver finishing ninth. Oddly teammate Sebastian Vettel opted to change to medium slicks!

A move that proved wrong from the moment he hit the track, and slithered around dangerously before he returned to the pits, nearly binning it on entry. A gamble that went out badly. A ‘WTF were they thinking?’ moment from Aston Martin.

Esteban Ocon recovered his weekend to claim the final point for Alpine.

Former NBA players charged in $4M health care fraud scheme

0

NEW YORK — Eighteen former NBA players were charged Thursday with pocketing about $2.5 million illegally by defrauding the league’s health and welfare benefit plan in a scam that authorities said involved claiming fictitious medical and dental expenses.

“The defendants’ playbook involved fraud and deception,” U.S. Attorney Audrey Strauss told a news conference after FBI agents across the country arrested 15 former players and one of their wives in a three-year conspiracy that authorities say started in 2017.

According to an indictment returned in Manhattan federal court, the former players teamed up to defraud the supplemental coverage plan by submitting fraudulent claims to get reimbursed for medical and dental procedures that never happened.

Strauss said prosecutors have travel records, email and GPS data that proves the former players were sometimes far from the medical and dental offices at the times when they were supposedly getting treated.

In one instance, she said, a former player was playing basketball in Taiwan when he was supposedly getting $48,000 worth of root canals and crowns on eight teeth at a Beverly Hills, California, dental office in December 2018.

The indictment said the scheme was carried out from at least 2017 to 2020, when the plan — funded primarily by NBA teams — received false claims totaling about $3.9 million. Of that, the defendants received about $2.5 million in fraudulent proceeds.

Strauss said each defendant made false claims for reimbursements that ranged from $65,000 to $420,000.

In a statement, the NBA called the allegations “particularly disheartening” because the benefit plans provided by the league and the National Basketball Players Association are critically important to support players’ health and well-being throughout their careers and post-retirement lives.

“We will cooperate fully with the U.S. Attorney Office in this matter,” the statement said.

Michael J. Driscoll, the head of New York’s FBI office, said the case demonstrated the bureau’s continued focus on uncovering fraud scams that cost the health care industry tens of billions of dollars per year.

Strauss said the conspiracy was led by Terrence Williams, who began his NBA career as a first-round pick in 2009. The indictment said he submitted $19,000 in fraudulent claims to the plan in November 2017 for chiropractic care. The claims led to a $7,672 payout for Williams.

The indictment said he then recruited other former NBA players to defraud the plan and offered to provide fraudulent invoices from a chiropractor and dentist in Southern California and a wellness office in Washington state.

At least 10 of the former players paid kickbacks totaling about $230,000 to Williams, according to the court papers. A lawyer who has represented Williams in the past declined to comment.

The Nets selected Williams with the 11th in the 2009 draft. He went on to play for four franchises — the Nets, Celtics, Rockets and Kings — over four seasons as a role player, averaging 7.1 points per game. He was waived by Boston two days after his 26th birthday in 2013 and didn’t appear in the league again.

Among others charged was Tony Allen, a six-time All-Defensive team selection and a member of the 2008 champion Celtics. His wife was also indicted. Tony Allen was not in custody as of Thursday afternoon. The Memphis Grizzlies announced weeks ago that they plan to retire Allen’s number at a Jan. 28 game versus the Utah Jazz.

For the most part, though, the former players charged had journeyman careers playing for several teams and never reaching anywhere close to the enormous stardom or salary that top players command.

Still, the 18 players combined to make $343 million in their on-court NBA careers, which doesn’t include outside income, endorsements or what any may have made playing overseas.

Strauss declined to speculate on their motivations or financial situations, saying to do so would go beyond the facts in the indictment.

Another former player charged was Sebastian Telfair, a onetime high school star in New York who was highly touted when he turned pro, though his NBA career with eight franchises never brought the stardom some had expected.

Telfair’s finances qualified him for a court-appointed attorney at an appearance in Manhattan before a magistrate judge, who set bail at $250,000, although Telfair was freed on his signature alone.

His lawyer, Deborah Colson, declined comment. Telfair, in running clothing and green sneakers, did not respond to requests for comment outside the courtroom, where Colson had entered a not guilty plea on his behalf.

Milt Palacio was placed on administrative leave from his role as an assistant coach with the Portland Trail Blazers after he was indicted, the team said Thursday. The Trail Blazers declined further comment “pending the outcome of the legal process.”

Those charged also included three NBA champions besides Allen. Glen Davis was also part of that 2008 title team in Boston, Shannon Brown won two championships with the Los Angeles Lakers, and Melvin Ely won a title with the San Antonio Spurs in 2007.

Among others who were charged, Tony Wroten, Ruben Patterson and Darius Miles were the only players who averaged double figures in their NBA careers.

All were charged with conspiracy to commit health care fraud and wire fraud, which carries the potential penalty of up to 20 years in prison. Williams was also charged with aggravated identity theft, which carries a potential penalty of up to two years in prison.

Strauss said the charge was lodged because Williams tried to frighten a co-defendant into paying a kickback by impersonating an employee from the health plan’s administrative manager, claiming there was an issue with an invoice that might require the co-defendant to pay back money he had received.

Arrests occurred in Washington state, California, New York, Alabama, Illinois, Florida, Nevada, Georgia and Tennessee.

It wasn’t immediately clear who might represent any of the accused players other than Telfair in court or comment on their behalf.

There was no immediate response to efforts to contact Ely, Miles or Patterson through attorneys or entities that have been associated with them or to emails sent to possible addresses for the Allens. A person who answered the phone at the home of Ely’s relatives said they were unaware of the case.

No working phone number or email address could immediately be found for Davis or Wroten. An email was sent to a possible address for Palacio.

The charges came just weeks after former NFL players Clinton Portis, Tamarick Vanover and Robert McCune pleaded guilty for their roles in a nationwide health care fraud scheme.

Champagnie says his preference was always Toronto

0

TORONTO – Justin Champagnie has an unwavering belief in himself, and once he sets a target, he says, he usually hits it.

“I always had a dream in mind of making it to the NBA and playing here,” the 20-year-old Raptors rookie said after Wednesday’s practice. “One thing everyone knows about me, when I put my mind to something, I’m going to go do it, no matter what anybody says.

“I just kind of put it in my head ever since I was a kid, I’m going to do two years of school, and (then) make my dreams come true, so that’s what I did.”

The Brooklyn, N.Y., native was a revelation in the Raptors’ pre-season opener against Philadelphia on Monday, scoring 17 points and grabbing 10 rebounds as part of a young, high-octane bench.

The six-foot-six, 200-pound forward went undrafted after two seasons at the University of Pittsburgh, but was signed by the Raptors to a two-way deal the next day.

Not surprising, of the 16 or 17 teams Champagnie visited for pre-draft workouts, he had his sights set on Toronto.

“I didn’t want to play anywhere else,” he said. “I told my agent right away I wanted to play in Toronto, like right after the workout.”

Champagnie did his pre-draft workout in Tampa, Fla., and said there was “just a vibe” with the organization, including the coaching staff. He practised for Raptors 905 head coach Patrick Mutombo and Raptors assistant Fabulous (Fab) Flournoy. Head coach Nick Nurse watched from the sidelines.

“It was just the energy I guess, I don’t really know. They were just upbeat and knew what they were doing and it was straight to the point. It was just really cool,” Champagnie said. “We went out for dinner and it was just a really good vibe.

Story continues below advertisement

“And of course I had heard about the reputation with bringing players up and developing them — but just the vibe alone kind of caught me.”

Toronto has built an excellent reputation of developing players through its G League affiliate Raptors 905, including current Raptors starters Fred VanVleet and Pascal Siakam. So Champagnie has no qualms of being on a two-way deal, and potentially spending much of the season playing in Mississauga, Ont.

“I just needed my foot in the door, I’ll figure it out from there,” he said. “I’m always hungry for more, ready to work.”

Asked how his ability to haul down rebounds at his relatively small size, Champagnie said “Just go do it.”

“I try to watch teams and see what they do, but nobody wants to play hard, everyone wants to be lackadaisical and just get up and down the floor a little bit. If you put that energy out, no one is going to stop you,” he said.

It’s about more than just effort though, it’s about reading angles.

“It’s kind of like when someone shoots the ball, I have already imagined where it’s going to go, so I go to that spot and most of the time it goes that way, so I’m there,” he said.

Story continues below advertisement

Champagnie said he’s lucky to have grown up as a twin; he was never short of an opponent to play against.

“Just growing up, he kind of pushed me, he was my motivation, having someone to go against each day and push you to be a better version of yourself,” he said.

Champagnie and twin brother Julian were nearly inseparable growing up, and people referred to each of them simply as “twin,” because it was tough to tell them apart. They played on the same AAU team, and had intended to attend the same university, but Julian chose to stay close to home while Justin wanted to move away and have his own space to grow and mature. He averaged team highs of 18 points and 11.1 rebounds last season.

Julian, who didn’t enter the draft, is a third-year guard for the Red Storm.

Their dad Ranford played soccer at St. John’s, leading them to an NCAA title in 1996.

Champagnie — which is pronounced “sham-penny” — shot 7-for-12 on Monday, knocking down a pair of three-pointers. He said he’s been working on his shooting as part of the Raptors’ nightly “shooting lab.” He should see plenty of playing time again Thursday when the Raptors visit Philadelphia to continue the pre-season.

The Raptors open the regular season at home on Oct. 20 versus Washington, and as predicted will be fully vaccinated. The team announced Wednesday that the lone member of the organization who was awaiting a second dose has received it.

Deontay Wilder transported to hospital for checks after devastating Tyson Fury knockout | Boxing | Sport

0

Deontay Wilder was reportedly transported to hospital for precautionary checks after being stopped in devastating fashion by Tyson Fury after an 11th-round thriller at the MGM Grand, Las Vegas. The Bronze Bomber was arguably too brave for his own good as he refused to lie down in this rollercoaster heavyweight back-and-fourth, despite knocking the Gypsy King down twice in Round 4.

Wilder was on the canvas himself in the third and looked spent as he demonstrated remarkable powers of recovery to survive an early scare.

Yet it was Fury’s turn to be saved by the bell shortly after in an electric start to this mouthwatering trilogy matchup that will live long in the memory.

The Bronze Bomber’s excessive weight soon began to play a part as he began to tire but still, his super-human punch power was enough to keep Fury on his toes.

Fury sent Wilder tumbling to the canvas once again in Round 10 before eventually settling the score in the eleventh when he closed the show with a chilling finish.

As the Brit said, he was only ever one punch away from winning this fight but Wilder’s determination and heart kept him in there as he dug deep to find something from within.

There were slightly concerning scenes at the end of the fight though, as Wilder looked groggy on his stool as blood seeped from his nose and ear.

According to ESPN+, he was taken to hospital for precautionary tests and checks.

He had already left the ring by the time Jimmy Lennon Jr confirmed that Fury was still the lineal, WBC and Ring Magazine heavyweight champion of the world.

Journalist Creg Stephenson tweeted: “Deontay Wilder transported to a Las Vegas hospital for precautionary reasons, per ESPN+.

“So he won’t be making any post-fight comments, it doesn’t seem.”

Fury was able to offer his analysis of another breathtaking heavyweight war though and the Gypsy King was critical of Wilder’s lack of sportsmanship when he approached his corner.

He told BT Sport: “I said, ‘Well done.’

“And he said, ‘I don’t wanna show any sportsmanship or respect.’ I said, ‘No problem.'”

He added: “Very surprised [by] that. Sore loser, an idiot.” Do you know what?

“To be a top fighting man, you’ve got to show guts and respect and he couldn’t do it tonight.

“And that’s it.”

Edmonton’s tennis community concerned over potential loss of courts to pickleball popularity – Edmonton

0

A court battle of sorts is heating up between tennis and pickleball players in Edmonton. As the popularity of pickleball explodes, the city could be converting existing tennis courts into pickleball courts.

The two games have similarities, but when it comes to court size, they’re different and that’s creating conflict.

“It takes up one quarter of the space than a tennis court plays on,” said Doug Fogg with the Edmonton Pickleball Club. “Usually a tennis court you’ll have two playing on (it). We could have 16 people playing pickleball on a court.”

Pickleball popularity has exploded and space to play is limited, Fogg said, particularly in Edmonton where there just aren’t enough courts.

“It’s kind of shame in some respects.

“Red Deer’s got 20 pickleball courts built by the City of Red Deer, Sherwood Park has 12 permanent pickleball courts, 12 courts in Stony Plain, 12 courts in St. Albert.”

So the pickleball community is looking to take over some tennis courts.

Tennis Edmonton said that means it will be losing some prime playing real estate to the Coronation Park Community Sports Centre project to meet this growing demand.

“The city is actually going to tear down the tennis courts here at Coronation and they are going to replace it with only two tennis courts and a couple of pickleball courts,” Miranda Smit, with Tennis Edmonton, said.

The city said it is still reviewing how the court space will be used but that, regardless, a 50 per cent reduction of the existing tennis court footprint will be needed.

Smit said it’s a big loss to the community and players that are sometimes needing to wait up to one hour just to play.

“I have nothing against pickleball but we need to do enough to make sure both sports exist and not create a kind of competition environment,” Wallace Chan with Tennis Edmonton said.

“Accessible tennis courts in Edmonton are particularly low when we look at other cities of a similar size across Canada,” Tennis Alberta Executive Director Alan Mackin said.

Chan said he wishes the tennis community was specifically consulted.

Both groups said there’s an even simpler answer: paint new lines on existing tennis courts with minor modifications, which would work for everyone.

Istanbul Qualifying: Hamilton fastest, Bottas on pole

0

istanbul quailfying Hamilton fastest in Turkey but starts 11th after engine penalty

The signs were imminent from Friday that Lewis Hamilton was the man to beat in qualifying for the 2021 Turkish Grand Prix. He duly was fastest at Istanbul Park, on a day when Max Verstappen and Red Bull simply lacked the firepower.

The seven-time world champion put himself in the best position to recover from his engine penalty with pole on Saturday in Istanbul. He will start 11th in the race and will have to rise above the challenge of slicing to through the field to make sure Max Verstappen doesn’t regain the lead in the Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship.

Hamilton spoke afterwards: “The track is absolutely awesome with the grip level it’s giving us now. The session was really tricky with some damp patches, but it was a really great job by the team. I’m so happy with the performance, in terms of getting us out at the right time.

“Tomorrow’s going to be difficult, but I’ll give it everything. It’s not the easiest overtaking at the moment, and we’re all on the same tyre, so I imagine tomorrow’s going to be difficult to move up.

“You saw Max in the last race once he get behind sixth, but we’ve got the long straight down the back – hopefully we can give the fans a good race,” he concluded.

Hamilton’s teammate Valtteri Bottas was over a tenth behind in second position but will start from pole tomorrow after his teammate’s penalty is served.

The Finn spoke of his qualifying: “It was a good qualifying, not easy conditions, especially Q1 with the damp parts. There were some good laps, I really enjoyed it, and it’s the result we planned.

“Lewis with his penalty gets the minimum he can, and I’m on pole – so it should be good.

“I’ll focus on my own race tomorrow, that’s the way to go when you start in front, and try to keep up a good pace,” he vowed.

Verstappen simply lacked the pace for pole and had to settle for third, but will start second. He was over three tenthes slower than his title rival when the it mattered.

The Dutchman said after qualifying: “Going off at the beginning was tricky with the conditions, but compared to yesterday we managed to turn it around quite well. The laps overall were quite good, even though the last one we lost a bit down the straight.

“Overall, it’s quite a decent recovery compared to yesterday. Tomorrow, lining up in second, let’s wait and see what the weather will do, but overall I’m pretty happy.

“I should be a bit better, let’s see how competitive we will be in the race. The tyre wear seems quite high around the track, but it’s quite fun to drive.”

Charles Leclerc proved that Ferrari’s early pace was not a fluke, and secured fourth 0.069s off Verstappen.

Pierre Gasly was again at his impressive best putting his AlphaTauri where it doesn’t belong, which was fifth place, with Alpine’s Fernando Alonso in sixth over a tenth slower than the Frenchman.

Sergio Perez doesn’t seem to have sorted out his qualifying struggles and was seventh, half a second slower than his teammate. He will have another uphill climb up the order in the race where instead, he should be assisting Verstappen at the sharp end of the grid.

McLaren’s Lando Norris was eighth ahead of Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll in ninth, while Yuki Tsunoda was a welcome presence in Q3 after struggling for a while now. A great day at the office for the Japanese rookie, on a weekend where Honda is being celebrated.

Istanbul qualifying q3 result 2021

Q2

Q2 commenced in dry conditions, with most teams attempting to go through into Q3 on the medium tyres, which seem to be the better starting tyre.

The first of the casualties in Q2 was Aston Martin’s Sebastian Vettel who never seemed in sync to deliver a Q3 worthy performance. He will line up 11th for Sunday’s race, but with the chance to choose his tyre strategy.

Esteban Ocon was 12th, 0.165s ahead of George Russell, who lost his last chance at a Q3 appearance with a mistake on the final corner.

The impressive Mick Schumacher will start in 14th place, as Carlos Sainz was 15th but will start from the back of the grid due to his engine related grid penalty. Sainz did not run, but gave Leclerc a tow to help him get into Q3 after an early spin in the session put him on the back foot.

Istanbul qualifying q2 result 2021

Q1

With rain on the horizon, all the teams sent their drivers out in a rush, to put a banker lap on the board using the soft tyres before the conditions worsened.

The major surprise was McLaren’s Daniel Ricciardo failing to make the cut into Q2 by 0.094s, and finishing a disappointing 16th, as Mick Schumacher equally surprised by making it into Q2 for Haas.

Nicolas Latifi was 17th for Williams, ahead of Antonio Giovinazzi in 18th, who out-qualified his veteran teammate Kimi Räikkönen in 19th.

Nikita Mazepin was last after several spins during the session.

Back on the green — Tiger Woods spotted at Florida golf course with his son

0

Tiger Woods was spotted back on the golf course as images surfaced of him spectating at a junior event tournament in Florida this weekend.

The 45-year-old golfer is pictured watching his son, Charlie, competing at a junior event. He was wearing golf gear and had a sleeve on his right leg. His girlfriend, Erica, is also in the image, standing next to him. These are the first images of Woods in a long time, as he has been relatively quiet since his car accident earlier in the year.

Woods was involved in a single-car crash on Feb. 23 near Rolling Hills Estates — about 30 miles southwest of Los Angeles. He suffered severe injuries to his right leg and foot that required hospitalization and multiple surgeries — one that even required a rod being placed in his leg. He posted a statement indicating surgery was a success to his Twitter account and then posted an image on Instagram on April 23 of him on crutches with his dog. He was also active behind the scenes at the Ryder Cup, where Team USA walked away with the victory, according to ESPN’s Bob Harig.

These images of Woods with his son this weekend are the first ones of him without crutches since the accident.

Charlie Woods, who is 12, has been active in the sport of golf, competing in various tournaments. Tiger Woods has made it a point to try to watch his son play in these tournaments as much as he can. One of the most memorable moments of Woods’ career was when he embraced his son after winning the 2019 Masters.

Since late March, there has been no official word from Tiger’s camp about his health or any plans to return to the golf course competitively.

Former NBA guard J.R. Smith set to play first golf tourney for North Carolina A&T

The school announced that Smith will play his first collegiate tournament Monday and Tuesday at the Phoenix Invitational hosted by Elon. The tournament will take place at the par-71, 6,867-yard Alamance Country Club golf course.

Smith, 36, enrolled at N.C. A&T over the summer after 16 seasons in the NBA and joined the golf team as a freshman walk-on. All team golfers must qualify for each tournament in practice unless he has finished first or second in the previous tournament. Smith qualified for next week’s tournament by 1 stroke.

Boxing tonight: Schedules, live streams, fight times for Fury vs Wilder 3, Smith vs Fowler | Boxing | Sport

0

Lineal heavyweight world champion Tyson Fury will be looking to put his bitter rivalry with Deontay Wilder to bed once and for all tonight when he meets the Bronze Bomber for a third time in Las Vegas. The American power puncher is desperate to execute revenge after he was beaten to a pulp last time out in the rematch back in February 2020 before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Both fighters are yet to return to action since then and the mutual inactivity is one of several factors that make this fight one of the most intriguing heavyweight encounters in modern history.

Fury is adamant he will replicate his brutal stoppage of Wilder as he looks to send the Bronze Bomber into retirement.

Wilder, however, knows he has the capability to close the show within the space of two seconds should he land one of his dynamite right hands.

There has been genuine bad blood between the pair ever since the arbitrator ruled Fury must honour Wilder’s rematch clause, jeopardising the undisputed heavyweight showdown with Anthony Joshua in Saudi Arabia.

The fight was initially due to take place on July 24 before Fury tested positive for coronavirus – something Wilder speculated was faked – just weeks out from the bout.

Bob Arum, Top Rank and PBC must also take enormous credit for the quality of the undercard and from top to bottom, this is one of the greatest PPV bills in recent memory.

Elsewhere, Eddie Hearn and Matchroom boxing are set to deliver an epic domestic show in Liverpool, headlined by Liam Smith versus Anthony Fowler.

There has been plenty of needle between the two scousers and their trainers on fight-week as the two light-middleweights prepare to go to war at the M&S Bank Arena.

At the moment, you can sign up to DAZN for just £1.99 per month, although the price is expected to rise to £7.99 in due course.

Fight Times

Fury vs Wilder 3 is expected to be a late one or an early one, depending on whether you’re prepared to stay awake or wake up early.

The main event is poised to get underway from around 4am but as always, that is subject to delays from the undercard.

If you want to whet the appetite with a cracking night of British boxing, DAZN is the place to be.

Carey Price seeking help signals changing narrative around mental health

0

In the wake of Carey Price‘s decision to step away from hockey and seek assistance, there has been widespread support for the star goalie of the Montreal Canadiens — and marks what appears to be a shift in addressing mental health in the world of professional and amateur sports.

Dr. Gordon Bloom, a professor of sports psychology at McGill University, said it is a change from the old narrative that athletes must “always suck it up, be a tough guy” even when they need help or don’t feel well.

“I think it’s going to send a message that will reverberate from the NHL all the way down to minor hockey,” he told Global News.

Price is voluntarily entering the NHL’s player assistance program, though few details were provided about what was behind the decision. The 34-year-old has not spoken publicly since the news was announced, but his wife penned a supportive message, citing mental health as the reason for Price’s temporary absence from the net.

Habs’ general manager Marc Bergevin told reporters Thursday he was caught off guard, but he encouraged others to seek aid when necessary. “Better days are ahead for Carey,” he added.

After teammate Jonathan Drouin took time away last season and now with Price seeking assistance, Bloom compared the evolving perspectives around mental health to how conversations changed about concussions in the NHL.

He pointed to how Sidney Crosby stepping off the ice to recover from repeated concussions propelled professional sports organizations and athletes to recognize the severity of head injuries.

The fact that sports leagues and governing bodies now also offer assistance programs has made it easier for athletes to be comfortable revealing they are experiencing something that needs to be addressed, Bloom explained.

“In the past, they were afraid to say it — because of the stigma, the negative stigma that was associated with saying you’re struggling, you’re not tough, your mental health is weak,” Bloom said.

“We’re really trying to change that narrative and we’re well on our way.”

Price has been known for his stoic demeanor over his long career with the Habs. He has racked up Vezina, Jennings, Ted Lindsay and Hart Memorial trophies. He has also helped carry Canada to Olympic gold.

It’s a positive step forward in discussing mental health if Price — who is considered one of the best goaltenders in modern-day hockey — is able to hit pause, said Bloom.

“It doesn’t come much bigger, more pressure-packed than that and he’s saying ‘I need to step away,’” Bloom said.

‘We just wish him the best’

Habs players only had messages of support for Price amid his sudden departure.

“Our families are close and it’s tough when you really judge a book by its cover,” said defencemen Jeff Petry.

“He’s a guy that comes in every day and you think everything’s OK and it’s unfortunate that it got to a point. We just wish him the best.”

Goaltender Jake Allen, who will likely step in for Price as the new season gets underway, said he already reached out to Price directly.

The team is supportive of “Carey Price, the human being,” Allan told reporters after a pre-season game against Ottawa Senators.

“The hockey player can wait as long as it takes to get whatever he needs to get his feet back under him,” Allan said. “That’s all we’re caring about in this locker room.”

“Hockey is secondary in this aspect.”

Price’s decision has made waves in the NHL too, with Toronto Maple Leafs captain John Tavares describing him as a “world-class netminder” and saying he wishes Price nothing but the best.

Former goalie Corey Hirsch also chimed in, saying he was “extremely proud” of Price.

“I hope more players feel safer to get help,” Hirsch wrote on Twitter. “I thank everyone on here that is showing Carey love and support. That’s how we will create change.”
