Defending champion Osaka knocked out of Australian Open | The Guardian Nigeria News

0

Defending champion Naomi Osaka was stunned Friday by unseeded Amanda Anisimova in the Australian Open, the American setting up a fourth-round clash with world number one Ashleigh Barty.

The Japanese four-time Grand Slam champion, seeded 13, won the first set on Margaret Court Arena but the nerveless Anisimova saved two match points in the third to pull off a huge 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (10/5) upset.

Her reward is a shot at a place in the quarter-finals against Barty, who crushed Italian 30th seed Camila Giorgi in straight sets.

“I’m speechless, I can’t stop smiling,” said the 20-year-old, who is undefeated this year after winning a lead-up tournament in Melbourne.

“I knew I had to be playing sharp if I wanted to give myself a chance. Naomi is always going to be playing well, she is an absolute champion.

“So I really had to step up my game and try to be aggressive. That’s what I started doing in the second set and so grateful I was able to do this well today and get the win. It means a lot.”

Osaka wasted little time getting on top of world number 60 Anisimova, breaking her immediately and then worked two break points on the American’s second serve, but failed to convert.

But Anisimova’s nerves settled and she began to find her range, threatening with some sizzling groundstrokes, only for Osaka’s power and precision to come to the fore.

Despite only getting 59 percent of her first serves in, Osaka was on top and sealed the set with a half-volley.

She faced three break points in a crunch second game in set two, but kept her cool to repel them only to be broken in game four as her serve again let her down.

A pumped up Anisimova took the set, hitting twice as many winners as Osaka.

Both players had chances in a tense third set with neither giving an inch until Osaka worked two match points at 5-4.

But Anisimova saved them both then slammed an ace to level it up at 5-5 and it went to a tie-break where she held her nerve to snap a nine-match losing streak against top 20 players

Newgarden: F1 doesn’t look much of a driver’s championship

Two-time Indycar Champion Josef Newgarden believes Formula 1 has become a constructors championship with drivers more dependent on good kit and thus the series no longer has so much allure for him.

The 31-year-old, speaking during a press event ahead of the 2022 Indycar season, told Autoweek: “For me the allure of F1 I think is the gravity of the cars.

“When I think about F1, I think about a manufacturers championship, trying to build the quickest cars that you can within—I should say within an unreasonable budget. That’s what was exciting about it,” added Newgarden.

“The older I’ve gotten, the more I’ve been in racing and watched Formula 1, I don’t know it’s somewhere I really want to race. It doesn’t look much of a driver’s championship to me,” reckoned Newgarden.

You want to have an opportunity to compete, to win the championship, to win big races

“It’s a very impressive championship, it always has been. It’s something I would certainly like to do. I’d like to drive everything that I could to have the experience. Then I’d have more first-hand knowledge to really speak on it,” added Newgarden.

Like most young up-and-coming drivers he had targeted a career in F1, going the traditional route (at the time) which included doing Formula Ford in England during 2009, then going on to do F3 with Carlin the following year, before returning to the USA and a season of Indy Lights.

In 2012 Newgarden made his Indycar debut at the 2012 Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg.

“I think IndyCar is really where you’re going to get the most competitive product as a racing driver. When you’re a driver at the top level, you want to have an opportunity to compete, to win the championship, to win big races regardless of your situation,” explained Newgarden, who will drive the #2 Penske this season.

Stats over the past decade back up Newgarden’s views, with Mercedes having dominated the F1 constructors’ championship for the past eight years, their drivers claiming seven of titles during the same period; Hamilton won six titles and Nico Rosberg one.

Prior to that Red Bull ruled the roost and thanks to that dominance Sebastian Vettel was able to bag four consecutive world champion trophies.

Since 2010 only four drivers have been F1 world champion, the above-mentioned trio and Max Verstappen joining the club with his 2021 crown. During the same period, there have been six Indycar champions, among them Newgarden who did it twice.

Chicago Bulls’ Lonzo Ball to have surgery on knee, out 6-8 weeks

0

Chicago Bulls guard Lonzo Ball has opted to have arthroscopic surgery on his left knee and is expected to miss six to eight weeks, the team announced Thursday.

Ball is expected to travel to California in the coming days to have the arthroscopic procedure to repair a meniscus tear, a source told ESPN.

The Bulls and Ball’s agent — Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul — had discussed options with doctors, but the procedure was deemed necessary after a recent change in nonsurgical treatment didn’t allow Ball to play through what’s described as a slight meniscus tear, sources said.

Ball has missed the past three games with what the Bulls initially deemed was a bone bruise. The team had already ruled him out for its upcoming three-game road trip because his knee was not recovering well from the initial treatment.

Bulls coach Billy Donovan on Wednesday night said Ball had changed treatments on the knee, and that doctors were waiting to see how Ball responded to the new treatment.

Ball had a procedure for a meniscus tear on the same knee in July 2018 and returned for the start of training camp with the Los Angeles Lakers.

He is averaging 13 points, 5.4 rebounds and 5.1 assists in 35 games in his first season in Chicago.

ESPN’s Jamal Collier contributed to this report.

Okocha, NFF scribe thrilled by Eagles’ form | The Guardian Nigeria News

• Round of 16 draw out
Former Super Eagles Captain, Austin Jay Jay Okocha, has described the team’s performance at the 33rd Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroun as fantastic.

Apart from being the only team that finished the group stage with the maximum nine points, Coach Austin Eguavoen also equaled the record he set as an indigenous coach in 2006, when he led the Super Eagles to win all their group matches in the city of Port Said, Egypt.

At Egypt 2006 AFCON, Okocha featured in the team, which eventually lost to the Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire in the semifinal in Alexandra.

This time around, Eguavoen, who was named interim coach a few weeks before the team’s departure to Cameroun, is operating with a new set of players, while Okocha operates as pundit for the tournament in South Africa.

In his short message to The Guardian shortly before the Super Eagles took on the Wild Dogs of Guinea-Bissau in their last group match on Wednesday, Okocha said: “I am happy with the team for the fantastic job.”

In the same way, General Secretary of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, commended the team for what he described as ‘excellent’ job in the tournament.

Goals by Sadiq Umar and William Ekong saw off the Wild Dogs of Guinea Bissau in Garoua, northern Cameroun, on Wednesday.

“It was an excellent performance by the Super Eagles, and we believe it can go all the way.”

The round of 16 opponent for the Super Eagles was expected to emerge last night from one of the third–placed teams from any of groups B, E and F. The match holds on Sunday in Garoua.

MEANWHILE, Burkina Faso will face Gabon on January 23 in the round of 16, while Senegal meet Cape Verde on January 25, just as Morocco will face Malawi.

Like Nigeria, the round of 16 opponent for the Pharaohs of Egypt was still being expected last night.

Anthony Joshua and Dillian Whyte set for mega-money offers to step aside for Fury vs Usyk | Boxing | Sport

“There are people who would like to see Fury v Usyk for the undisputed title, and would be willing to pay a lot of money for it,” he said.

“If there is a lot of money in the pot, and a plan put in place to make all the fighters happy, then there is a chance it can happen.

“The problem is time. Conversations started a month ago – but they are very complex.”

Fury’s American promoter Bob Arum echoed that last message, and revealed it is being made messier by other groups trying to get involved to grab themselves a piece of the pie.

Albon: Now I know what I’m doing and what I want

Alex Albon says he is far better prepared for a second crack at Formula 1 after being made redundant by Red Bull last year

The likeable and still highly-rated Thai driver is back and believes he will be better than he was before having learnt a thing or two from Max Verstappen.

Developed by the Red Bull young driver programme, Albon ticked all the boxes but in retrospect, it was too much too soon, especially when he was promoted to be Verstappen’s teammate by Red Bull, with only a dozen F1 races under his belt with Toro Rosso.

He was demolished by Verstappen and sent to DTM for a year before a series of fortunate events has him back, albeit with Williams.

In an interview published on the Williams website, Albon said: “It’s great to be back. It will be my third year in F1, but I feel like I gained a lot of experience over my time. I’m not this rookie coming into it, now I know what I’m doing and what I want.

“It’s great to be able to work with this team who will listen to me, we’ll listen to each other and try and get the most out of this car,” added the 25-year-old.

Red Bull refected twice Albon gets another crack at the big time with Williams

Despite being rejected seven years earlier by Red Bull, Albon was back in their good books and, out of the blue, surprisingly handed the Toro Rosso when he was already committed to Nissan e.Dams in Formula E, who released him and allowed him to his F1 debut at the 2019 Australian Grand Prix for Toro Rosso.

Since then he has gravitated in Red Bull’s energetic world, even when sidelined last year he drove for their DTM effort he was reserve and test driver for the Blues. For this year he has stepped into the ‘unknown’ of the Williams HQ.

“It was very exciting to meet who I’m going to be working with and who’s going to be building my car,” said Albon on his first day of work at Grove. “It’s a very international team and there are a lot of names that I haven’t quite got in my head yet, but that will come!

“Other than that, I got to meet my side of the garage in terms of engineering and through the simulator work, we learnt how we do our business – what makes me click and what makes them click.

Some people see Williams as an intimate team, but it’s still massive!

“There’s still a lot of people here, from marketing to aero, the machine shop to accounting, it’s a big team. I’ve seen a lot of new faces and I’m not quite sure I’ll remember everyone’s names but it’s been great to meet everyone. It’s in the middle of the countryside! So I’ve got to get used to that.

“It’s a really nice place, everything’s built under one roof more or less and you can tell that everything is quite close and as a consequence, I feel like everyone knows each other here which is really nice to see. Everyone’s very friendly and I’ve had a good time.”

Albon attended Grands Prix last season, as a reserve in between his DTM commitments, helping AlphaTauri rookie Yuki Tsunoda (mentally) in the latter half of the season, to good avail too as the Japanese driver finished his year strongly after a year of waywardness.

This gave Albon first-hand insight into how Verstappen, the teammate that obliterated him, won the 2021 F1 world champion title and what makes the Dutch ace so special.

What did Alex learn from being Max Verstappen’s teammate and watching him win the 2021 F1 title?

“More than anything, I was surprised by his ability not to worry. Mentally he’s incredible,” Albon revealed to Motorsport-Total: “He just drives the car and don’t think about the consequences or anything else that’s going on. That inspired me.

“If he finished behind Lewis, he would say: Okay, never mind. If he led a race or won a race, it was also: Okay, whatever. I admire that because it’s not easy to be in the limelight as much as he is.”

Albon admitted he was “incredibly happy” to see his former teammate be crowned Champion at Yas Marina but at the same time felt for Mercedes: “I can see both sides. When I look at Silverstone, Hungary, Jeddah or even the first round in Abu Dhabi, I have the impression that the decisions went against Max.

“Of course, it must feel bad for Mercedes but at the same time I think Red Bull deserves it,” said Albon who has the big shoes of Mercedes-bound George Russell to fill at Williams who he will be measured up against Nicholas Latifi.

While it was cruel for Albon to have to sit out after only two seasons in the top flight, it should serve him well. Apart from being wiser, he knows what to expect. He is ready now. However, the spotlight on him will be bright as there is nowhere to hide for F1’s latest comeback kid.

He can take heart that more than one great was forced to sit out a season after getting the taste of F1, only to suffer a similar demotion before making a solid return. Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa spring to mind.

Los Angeles Lakers star Russell Westbrook benched late in loss; coach Frank Vogel had green light, sources say

0

LOS ANGELES — Long before Russell Westbrook was benched down the stretch of Wednesday’s 111-104 loss to the Indiana Pacers, Los Angeles Lakers coach Frank Vogel was given assurances that the organization would support him in taking a hard line while coaching the star, sources told ESPN.

Over the past week and a half, Lakers management has told the coaching staff to coach Westbrook as they see fit, even if that means pulling him from a game, as Vogel did for the final 3 minutes, 52 seconds of the fourth quarter against Indiana, sources told ESPN.

One source close to the situation described the message from management to the staff as, “You got to do what you got to do.”

Westbrook was 5-for-17 from the field when Vogel put in Malik Monk for him with L.A. trailing 101-94.

Apart from his offensive struggles, Westbrook failed to execute on the defensive end. The final straw, pushing the staff to honor their instinct to bench him, was when Caris LeVert blew by Westbrook on defense for a layup with 7 minutes, 13 seconds remaining.

The coaching staff had repeatedly emphasized the scouting report to take away LeVert’s right hand, and Westbrook, guarding LeVert at the top of the key one-on-one, didn’t angle himself properly to thwart the drive and allowed LeVert easy access to the paint en route to the hoop.

Asked what was behind his decision to bench Westbrook, the normally measured Vogel responded with a matter-of-fact edge.

“Playing the guys that I thought were going to win the game,” he said.

Vogel’s job has been in jeopardy since L.A. was blown out by 37 points at the Denver Nuggets over the weekend, according to various reports.

The coaching staff had been debating whether to pull Westbrook from late-game situations for weeks, sources said, but always refrained because of worries about the lasting impact on Westbrook’s psyche.

Indeed, even LeBron James danced around the subject of Westbrook’s benching, perhaps not wanting to draw further attention to the indignity for the former league MVP.

“Would you think that would bother Russ not being in a late game?” he said, answering a reporter’s question with a question, rather than giving a straight answer.

James was left to speak on Westbrook because the 14-year veteran — who exited the court with 8.4 seconds remaining on the clock — departed from the arena without speaking to reporters.

Westbrook also had already vacated the locker room by the time his teammates were finished showering, sources said, forgoing any postgame discussion with the team.

“I don’t think it’s nothing personal,” said Lakers forward Carmelo Anthony, who recently said that he can relate to the role adjustment Westbrook is going through this season, having done it himself a few years back. “It’s just something that he’s not used to. You would think somebody like that would be on the court. But with the flow of the game, there’s been times I haven’t been in the game or other guys haven’t been in the game. So I don’t think it’s anything personal.”

Not personal, but certainly critical. The Lakers, about to embark on a six-game road trip and sitting at No. 8 in the Western Conference at 22-23, can ill afford to lose any more time prioritizing Westbrook’s comfort over the team’s chance at success.

“It’s just something that Russ has got to … ,” Anthony said before correcting himself mid-sentence, “We gotta help him figure it out.”

“It’s frustrating. I can tell you that,” he continued. “It’s frustrating as a player who’s trying to make it right, trying to do things right. This is new for him. This is a new situation. This is a new environment. We got to help him through it. I mean, that’s the only thing we can do, is make sure his mental is right. That’s the only thing I care about. I don’t care about any basketball stuff when it comes to Russ.

“As long as his mental is right, then I’m good.”

Golden State Warriors distance from minority owner after his comments about Uyghurs

0

SAN FRANCISCO — Billionaire Chamath Palihapitiya, a minority owner of the Golden State Warriors, is under fire for saying “nobody cares” about the Uyghurs in China, and the team is distancing itself from him.

On the latest edition of his All-In Podcast, Palihapitiya dismissed the situation in China, which is accused by the U.S. of genocide and crimes against humanity because of the treatment of the Uyghurs Muslim minority population in the Xinjiang region in northwest China.

“Nobody cares about what’s happening to the Uyghurs, OK?” Palihapitiya said at the nearly 15-minute mark of the show from Saturday. “… I’m telling you a very hard, ugly truth, OK, of all the things that I care about, yes it is below my line.”

Golden State swiftly reacted Monday by saying Palihapitiya’s views aren’t reflective of those of the team.

“As a limited investor who has no day-to-day operating functions with the Warriors, Mr. Palihapitiya does not speak on behalf of our franchise, and his views certainly don’t reflect those of our organization,” the Warriors said in a statement.

Palihapitiya, who was born in Sri Lanka, later backtracked. In a Twitter post to his 1.5 million followers, he wrote that “important issues deserve nuanced discussions. Some clarifying comments:

“In re-listening to this week’s podcast, I recognize that I come across as lacking empathy. I acknowledge that entirely. As a refugee, my family fled a country with its own set of human rights issues so this is something that is very much a part of my lived experience. To be clear, my belief is that human rights matter, whether in China, the United States, or elsewhere. Full stop.”

Swiss-born Boston Celtics center Enes Kanter Freedom expressed his outrage on social media.

“When @NBA says we stand for justice, don’t forget there are those who sell their soul for money & business like @chamath the owner of @warriors who says `Nobody cares about what’s happening to the Uyghurs.’ When genocides happen, it is people like this that let it happen. Shame!”

After Tuesday’s shootaround, Warriors star Andrew Wiggins was asked about Palihapitiya’s comments and made it clear they have different beliefs.
