Tyson Fury mocks ‘one-trick pony’ Deontay Wilder before tense five-minute staredown | Boxing | Sport

0

In the second bout, Fury definitively stopped Wilder in the seventh to win the WBC world heavyweight title.

Fury’s trainer, Sugarhill Steward, has warned: “He now has power to knock a man out with one punch.

“That’s something I’m happy he has now, along with his other boxing skills and his boxing IQ. He has one-punch knockout power.”

Fury and Wilder then faced off in front of the cameras and neither man refused to budge for around five minutes, capping off a bizarre press conference.

Haseeb Hameed made 57 and Ben Duckett is unbeaten on 69, although Derbyshire’s pace-bowling allrounder Fynn Hudson-Prentice checked Nottinghamshire’s progress with 4 for 50 as the home county closed on 256 for 7.

Everything you need to know for Phil Mickelson and Tom Brady against Bryson DeChambeau and Aaron Rodgers

0

They have been talking about this for weeks, mostly with social media back-and-forth, but at last, Phil Mickelson and Tom Brady will take on Bryson DeChambeau and Aaron Rodgers on Tuesday.

This is the fourth iteration of the match, a series that began with Tiger Woods and Mickelson playing winner-take-all against each other. Along the way, others have joined — Steph Curry, Charles Barkley and Peyton Manning among them. Now DeChambeau steps into the mix along with Rodgers and Brady, who makes his second appearance.

Before you watch the match, though, here are a few things we’re anticipating this time around.

Trash-talking

If you’ve been paying attention to social media, you’ve probably already seen the level of trash talk that has been thrown around by Brady, Mickelson, Rodgers and DeChambeau.

Brady wasn’t shy about going after DeChambeau with a Brooks Koepka meme on Twitter. The DeChambeau vs. Koepka feud has been the story of golf this summer, and Brady wasn’t going to miss an opportunity to jump in on it.

DeChambeau responded with a Deflategate joke of his own and it escalated from there, with Brady mocking Rodgers and the Packers, saying DeChambeau should get used to laying up because he knows Rodgers won’t go for it. That was, of course, referring to this season’s playoff game when the Packers kicked a field goal instead of going for it on fourth down in a game against Brady and the Buccaneers.

We saw plenty of trash talk in the previous match with Woods, Manning, Mickelson and Brady. Expect more on Tuesday.

Nasty bombs and hellacious seeds

Mickelson and DeChambeau aren’t going to hold back off the tee in this event, so get ready for some bombs. Mickelson often uses the words “bombs” and “hellacious seeds” to describe his tee shots.

The two have played together in a few pre-tournament rounds and have gone back and forth trying to outdo each other. That won’t change in this match. Both will try to put on a show with their drivers.

Through the Travelers Championship, DeChambeau leads the PGA Tour in average driving distance at 322.4 yards. Mickelson is No. 47, averaging 302.6 yards, and knowing Mickelson’s competitive side, he probably isn’t going to let DeChambeau show him up the entire match.

An update on DeChambeau’s caddie

The conversation will likely stay light, but keep in mind that DeChambeau and caddie Tim Tucker split up the day before the first round of the Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit.

DeChambeau had Cobra Golf tour rep Ben Schomin on the bag for the tournament. His agent said he’ll begin the process of looking for a new caddie. The players won’t have caddies at this event, so we won’t get an answer as to who he will hire. But the commentators should at least prod DeChambeau about what happened and what led to the breakup. And it is a safe guess it might end up being a conversation point for Mickelson and Brady to throw around.

Aaron Rodgers and his future

Rodgers hasn’t spoken much to the media about his future with the Packers after an eventful offseason. Rumors of Rodgers being unhappy have swirled around the league, and he skipped Packers minicamp.

No one knows what will happen next, and we’re not likely to find out what he’s thinking at this match. But again, it would be surprising if this topic didn’t come up.

Brady’s game

In his first time competing in this event, Brady had some early struggles against Woods and Manning. He came on late, though, and made some clutch shots for his team, including a hole out from the fairway.

It got so bad at one point, though, Charles Barkley bet Brady $50,000 — the proceeds going to charity — that Brady couldn’t hit the green on a par 3. Brady missed the green and Barkley quipped, “I should’ve just said if you can just keep it on the planet.”

When Barkley is making fun of your golf game, you know there’s an issue.

Brady has been practicing, though, and there is no doubt he is looking to get off to a fast start this time.

Charles Barkley’s commentary

Barkley was a star of the match with Brady and Manning, taking shots at every golfer, including Woods. He will be back as an analyst this time around.

Barkley doesn’t hold back and isn’t afraid to say what’s on his mind. It’s almost as if an average fan has a microphone and is allowed to say what they want. Barkley needled Brady so much in the last event that Brady started talking trash back to Barkley.

He’ll be joined by Cheyenne Woods, Larry Fitzgerald and Trevor Immelman as analysts.

The golf course

The match is being played at The Reserve Golf Course at Moonlight Basin in Big Sky, Montana. It’s a Jack Nicklaus course that runs 8,000 yards from the back tees, including a 777-yard par 5. It’s set at a 7,500-foot elevation with mountains off in the distance and trees lining the course. It should provide a good backdrop for the heckling and big drives.

Luka Doncic, Slovenia ‘fought really, really hard’ en route to securing country’s first Olympics berth in men’s basketball

Most of the members of Slovenia’s basketball team charged toward Luka Doncic moments after the final buzzer sounded Sunday, determined to get him onto their shoulders and carry their best player around the court in celebration.

How fitting: He lifted them, so they lifted him.

Doncic and Slovenia are headed to the Olympics for the first time, after winning 96-85 at Lithuania on Sunday to clinch a spot in the Tokyo Games. Doncic — the MVP of the tournament in Kaunas, Lithuania — was simply brilliant. The Dallas Mavericks star guard posted 31 points, 11 rebounds and 13 assists for the first triple-double by any player in any of the four Olympic qualifying tournaments that were played in the past week to determine the last four teams in the Olympic field.

“I don’t care about the MVP,” Doncic said. “We won here. We’re going to the Olympics, the first time in our country. It’s amazing. I think every kid dreams about being in the Olympics. I did too. So, here we are. We fought really, really hard, and I think we deserve to be here.”

The game was tied 52-52 at halftime, and Slovenia opened the third on an 11-2 run. Lithuania eventually closed within 71-69, but a 14-0 run by Slovenia put Doncic’s club in control for good.

And when the last few seconds ticked away, Doncic threw his arms skyward in celebration.

“We’re making history for our country,” Doncic said. “We can just go up from here.”

Lithuania was one of four nations playing host to Olympic qualifiers that ended Sunday, all four being winner-take-all events, with one team from each region making the Tokyo field.

And all four home teams, which figured to have major advantages by being at home, fell short of the Olympics: Slovenia beat Lithuania in the final; Croatia and Canada lost semifinal games; and Serbia, the reigning Olympic silver medalists, was stunned in a regional final on Sunday by Italy.

“A huge disappointment,” Lithuania coach Darius Maskoliunas said. “We lost at home. We expected a better result.”

Slovenia will be placed in Group C for the Tokyo Games, one of the three four-team groups at the Olympics. Slovenia will play Argentina on July 26, Japan on July 29 and reigning World Cup champion Spain on Aug. 1. The top two teams in each group, plus two wild cards, will make the Olympic quarterfinals.

“It’s just one of the best feelings,” Doncic said. “We worked hard for this.”

Vlatko Cancar scored 18 for Slovenia, which also got 16 from Jaka Blazic and 13 from Mike Tobey.

Jonas Valanciunas, Arnas Butkevicius and Mantas Kalnietis each scored 14 for Lithuania, which will miss the Olympics for the first time since getting its independence from the Soviet Union; it had been to each of the past seven Olympics, starting in 1992.

Eimantas Bendzius scored 11, and Marius Grigonis added 10 for Lithuania.

BELGRADE, SERBIA REGION

ITALY 102, SERBIA 95: Italy went into Serbia and pulled off a stunner, eliminating the team that finished second behind the United States at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games.

Nico Mannion scored 24 points, Achille Polonara scored 22 and Italy reached the Olympics for the first time since the 2004 Athens Games — leading by as many as 24 before a stunned arena in Belgrade.

Simone Fontecchio scored 21, Stefano Tonut added 15 and Alessandro Pajola added 10 for Italy. The Italians will be in Group B at the Tokyo Olympics, facing Germany — another winner on Sunday — on July 25, Australia on July 28 and Nigeria on July 31.

Danilo Andjusic scored 27 for Serbia, while Filip Petrusev scored 22 and Ognjen Dobric added 17.

VICTORIA, CANADA REGION

CZECH REPUBLIC 97, GREECE 72: Patrik Auda led a balanced effort with 20 points on 8-for-9 shooting, and the Czech Republic — which stayed alive in the tournament by winning a pair of down-to-the-wire games — is headed to the Olympics for the first time after running away from Greece.

Jan Vesely (16), Jaromir Bohacik (15), Ondrej Balvin (14) and Tomas Satoransky (12) reached double digits for the Czechs, who beat Uruguay by one point just to make the semifinals and then ousted Canada by two points in overtime to make the final.

The Czech Republic will be in Group A at the Tokyo Games, facing Iran on July 25, France on July 28 and the U.S. on July 31.

Giorgios Papagiannis scored 14 for Greece, which got 12 points from both Konstantinos Mitoglou and Giannoulis Larentzakis, and 11 from Kostas Sloukas.

SPLIT, CROATIA REGION

GERMANY 75, BRAZIL 64: Moritz Wagner scored 28 points, and Germany is headed back to the Olympics for the first time since 2008, after topping Brazil to win the qualifying tournament in Split, Croatia.

Robin Benzing scored 13 points, and Maodo Lo scored 10 for Germany, which is seeking its first Olympic men’s basketball medal.

Germany will be in Group B at the Tokyo Games, facing Italy on July 25, Nigeria on July 28 and Australia on July 31.

Anderson Varejao scored 14 points, and Alex Garcia finished with 10 for Brazil.

A grand slam tradition at Wimbledon — Sport — The Guardian Nigeria News – Nigeria and World News

There was no play yesterday, the middle Sunday. In 2019, Wimbledon restored the old tradition of the four major tournaments. The first week was replete with controversy over the slips and falls on the grass surface. A slip at three-all in the first set of her first round match ended the sixth seed Serena Williams’ record title quest. It also halted Adrian Mannarino.

In the past, Roland Garros was the only tournament that was not played on grass. The US Open changed to Har-Tru (green clay) in 1975 at the West Side Tennis Club Forest Hills. In 1978, when the venue moved to the National Tennis Centre, the surface chosen was hard-court which also replaced grass at the Australian Open.

The All Nigeria Lawn Tennis Championships was also played on 12 grass courts of the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club. The surface was changed to hard-court in 1975 when a world-class tennis arena was constructed for hosting the top 32 male players under the aegis of World Championship of Tennis, the precursor of the Men’s International Professional Tennis Council and the Association of (male) Tennis Professionals, now ATP Tour.

The shocking upsets in the men’s draw commenced with Frances Tiafoe’s first round defeat of third seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece. Tsitsipas was the finalist in Paris where he took the first two sets from Djokovic and who was one of those considered capable of halting the Serbian ace in London.

Serena suffered the exit in the first round in which Alice Cornett of France defeated the fifth seed Bianca Andreescu of Canada. In the second round, Magda Linette of France defeated the fourth seeded Elina Svitolina from Ukraine and American Madison Brengle defeated compatriot Sofia Kenin, the fourth seed. After defeating Venus Williams in the second round, Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur achieved an upset over the 2017 champion Garbine Muguruza of Spain in the third round.

Jabeur’s slices and drop shots did the damage to Garbine’s all-power game. In the fourth round, would she be able to tame the power game of the seventh seeded Iga Swiatek of Poland?

The host country is celebrating a debutante in 18-year old Emma Raducanu who received a wild card entry and has progressed to the fourth round. She is the first British lady to reach the last 16, since Virginia Wade won the Centenary event in 1977. As she faces Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic when the second week flags off today, the grass is drier and safer.

Blue Jays submit proposal to federal government for return to play in Toronto at Rogers Centre

TORONTO — The Toronto Blue Jays have submitted a proposal to the federal government to return to Rogers Centre this season.

A spokesperson for the team said Monday that the Blue Jays asked for federal backing to return home after receiving support at the city and provincial levels.

The border between Canada and the United States is closed to non-essential travel until at least July 21 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Baseball players crossing the border from the U.S. would be subject to a 14-day quarantine, unless the Jays receive permission from federal public health authorities to exempt or modify that condition.

Ottawa gave the NHL a travel exemption for the final two rounds of the Stanley Cup playoffs and recently approved a plan that will allow CFL players and staff to return to Canada without undergoing a full 14-day quarantine.

On Monday, the federal government eased restrictions at the border, allowing fully vaccinated Canadians and permanent residents to skip the quarantine when returning to Canada. While that doesn’t immediately help the Jays, it’s a sign things are progressing in the right direction for the team after 16 months of rigid travel restrictions.

The Jays are currently playing home games in Buffalo, N.Y., after opening the season with Dunedin, Fla., as their home venue.

Toronto also played home games in Buffalo last year after a proposal to have U.S.-based teams avoid the mandatory 14-day quarantine was rejected by the federal government.

The Blue Jays last played at 49,000-capacity Rogers Centre on Sept. 29, 2019, an 8-3 win over Tampa Bay.

England believe they belong in Euro 2020 semis, says Maguire | The Guardian Nigeria News

Harry Maguire says England have more confidence heading into Wednesday’s Euro 2020 semi-final against Denmark than when they faltered at the last four of the World Cup three years ago.

Gareth Southgate’s men lost 2-1 to Croatia in 2018 despite taking an early lead in Moscow.

Now on home soil, with 60,000 fans allowed to attend the Denmark clash at Wembley, Maguire believes England feel they belong at the latter stages of major tournaments as they seek to reach a first final in 55 years.

“We’ll probably have a little bit more belief going into the Denmark game than what we did in the Croatia game,” the Manchester United captain said on Monday.

“We hadn’t been to a semi-final in so long as a country, so the belief wasn’t there. I’m sure the fans are believing more now.

“As players of course and staff and everyone involved in the bubble, we’re all believing as well.

“Losing in the semi-final of the World Cup hurt a lot so we need to make sure that, on Wednesday night, we get a positive feeling rather than the one we got against Croatia.”

Maguire was on target in a 4-0 thrashing of Ukraine in the quarter-finals as England clicked into gear after a slow start to the tournament.

But they have yet to concede a goal in five games and have kept a national record of seven clean sheets in a row, including in two pre-tournament friendlies.

“It’s a real plus for us. Seven clean sheets is remarkable,” added Maguire. “It is not just us defenders, it comes from a team, from a base, from a foundation of the forward lads pressing the ball and working tirelessly.

“The minor details make the big details. We’ve been solid. The most important thing is winning games. Keeping clean sheets enables us to do that.”

Anthony Joshua slams Tyson Fury but vows bout will happen even if Oleksandr Usyk beats him | Boxing | Sport

0

Anthony Joshua has accused Tyson Fury of ‘letting down’ the boxing world following the collapse of their heavyweight bout – but insists he will fight Fury even if he loses to Oleksandr Usyk.

Joshua and Fury were supposed to go head to head later this year but a court arbitration ruling means that the latter must first fight Deontay Wilder.

Fury will now clash with Wilder in Las Vegas on July 24 while Joshua will defend his IBF, WBA and WBO gold against Usyk in September.

In March, two-time heavyweight champion Fury confirmed a two-fight deal with Joshua, with the first to be hosted in Saudi Arabia this July or August.

The pair spent the next few months exchanging social media jibes, with Joshua telling Fury that his fans were waiting for him to officially sign off the fight.

“Unfortunately, his team let the whole boxing world down,” Joshua told Sky Sports.

“I will still be here, still ready to put on a show.

“End of the year. Let me get past Usyk first. But with or without Usyk in my life, I will fight Fury.

“Usyk isn’t the be-all and end-all.

Usyk doesn’t determine the Fury fight. The Fury fight has to happen. It’s a big fight, bigger than boxing, bigger than the belts.

“It will happen. After the Usyk fight, after I defend my belts.

“The fight will be bigger, better than what it would have been.”

Fury has also refused to rule out a rearranged bout with Joshua.

He will first fight Wilder but has said that Joshua and his team will then “get their five minutes of fame”.

Last week, Fury told Sky about Joshua’s team: “I’ve got to get past Wilder then those guys will get their five minutes of fame. I’ll give them the biggest beatdown they have had in their lives.

“I’ll deal with these guys later – the most important thing to me is Wilder, the most dangerous heavyweight in the world who would knock out Joshua in the first round. As I’ve told [Joshua’s promoter] Eddie Hearn, the difference between me and them is they are businessmen and I’m a Spartan.”

Joshua responded: “I am 100 per cent sure that I will fight him and win. You’ve got to ask him the same question.

“I’m not too sure [what he would say].

“We did everything. During a global pandemic – the toughest time to organise a fight like that – we managed to have 20,000 fans available, a site fee, the media ready, my name was on the contract, I was in training.

“Then boom, they cancelled. I stay ready to fight them all because I’m a throwback fighter.”

Golf pro, 2 others fatally shot at Georgia country club

0

KENNESAW, Ga. — A golf pro and two other men were killed in a shooting at an Atlanta-area country club, and the suspect is still at large, authorities said.

Officers found an unresponsive man with an apparent gunshot wound to the head Saturday near the 10th hole of the golf course at Pinetree Country Club, Cobb County Police Officer Shenise Barner told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The department identified him Sunday as country club employee and golfer Eugene Siller.

“Tragedy has stricken the Georgia Section PGA in the loss of our Member, Gene Siller. Thoughts and prayers for his family and the Pinetree Country Club family,” the Georgia section of the PGA of America said in a tweet.

Upon further investigation, police said two other dead men were discovered in the bed of a white pickup truck that was on the green. Both had apparent gunshot wounds. Barner said one was identified as Paul Pierson, the registered owner of the truck, and that the other man has not been identified.

Neighbor John Lavender told WAGA-TV that he heard “five, six booms go off” and wasn’t sure whether it was gunshots or fireworks.

“You just don’t think it’s gunshots in this area,” he said.

The country club is near the campus of Kennesaw State University. The school tweeted Saturday, after the shooting, that there were no credible threats to campus, which is about 25 miles northwest of downtown Atlanta.

Spinner claims seven to limit Northants’ lead to 12 as tense contest heads for showdown

Yorkshire 158 and 159 for 6 (Brook 76*) lead Northamptonshire 170 (Vasconcelos 55, Bess 7-43) by 147 runs

This is a high-pressure match as far as the Championship is concerned, but don’t talk to Dom Bess about pressure. He experienced what pressure really means in India during a deeply unsettling England winter. The sort of pressure that does not just have a cricket match at stake but which tears at your very soul.

It is something to celebrate therefore that when expectations focused on him as much as at any time this season, his rehabilitation at Yorkshire looked well underway as he turned in career-best figures of 7 for 43 on a used Northampton pitch, the sort that turned just enough for spin bowlers to take centre stage but demanded resilience if they were to succeed.

If there was not much turn for Bess on a surface that had previously been used for three T20 fixtures, he bowled with impressive consistency to make use of what variations there were and held Yorkshire together in the face of a stiff Northants challenge.

Bess was contentiously dropped by England after taking 17 wickets at 22 runs apiece in three Tests in Sri Lanka and India. His return for the final Test in Ahmedabad was an unhappy one and, although England called him up as cover for the second Test in New Zealand in the Spring, a restorative season was clearly needed.

Progress until now has been solid rather than spectacular, but he had reason for satisfaction after working through the Northants order in methodical fashion. Jeetan Patel, England’s spin bowling coach, was on hand and will have been encouraged by what he saw.

Yorkshire sneaked past Northants by one run at Headingley in early May, but they have entered their final two Group 3 matches with Northants and Lancashire also contesting the top-two finish required to qualify for Division One in the climax of the Championship season later this summer. With Yorkshire 147 ahead at the close of the second day, with four second-innings remaining, another tension-wracked finale is eminently possible. They would grab a 200-run lead with open arms.
The muse was also with Harry Brook once again as unbeaten 76 followed up Bess’ performance with the ball. The leading run-maker in the Blast, he has also had his best Championship season to date, averaging not far short of 40, but is still to add to his two first-class hundreds.
